Yup, add me to the list of RecoverMyfiles admirers. This has saved my bacon a number of times, and does a nice job of recovering photos from digital media in addition to the harddrive. It's not so good for CD's and DVD's, though, I rely on isobuster and CDRoller for those...

Excellent idea suleika and thanks for the list of sites. This will help me to do the same - the scaping sites make me a bit crazy, too (not that I'm calling you crazy, mind!).

Activation/License/Language Help / Re: I really need a XoftSpySE license key
« Last post by Darwin on August 08, 2007, 02:52 PM »
We're feeding trolls here, friends. No one can seriously believe that posting a comment like this:

hey, I got a spyware and I can't erase it, im tryong with this program, but I caant erase anything cause I dont hav the license key, please, someone save meeee

on these forums is going to result in somebody else actually helping them steal the software? Additionally, has anyone posting anything like this question ever actually responded/participated further? Now to motive... Uh... I can't figure that bit out - why would someone bother to post this?

Not to worry - this program is ALWAYS at LEAST $40 off - I picked it up for $9.95 at one point three years ago or so and still see it as low as $14.95 occasionally. It's actually quite good but there are no updates (just upgrades that you have to buy at the full, er, discounted, price) and they've an activation limit of about 3 installations. Or at least they did with the last version.

EDIT: I ran up against the activation limit and have not had it installed since... I use RecoverMyFiles and Restorer2000 v.3 for my harddrive undelete needs. isobuster and CDRoller complete the quartet and provide me with CD/DVD recovery... Yes, redundancy is my middle name! However, I genuinely find that when it comes to recovering lost data more than one approach is better as there are some files that one app won't pick up but that another will.

Best feature of FileSaver? The option to securely delete the files that it finds for recovery. This is a really handy feature and as far as I know unique to File Saver.

Do you use DOpus, Carol? If you do, you could try associating the files through its Settings - File Types menu. I've had success doing this in the past where the native "Open With" and selecting "Always open with this program" didn't work. Just a thought (yes, I'm clutching at straws now...). Good luck!

I got this as well and have downloaded the updates without installing them (I'm having trouble, actually, as I've got Office 2006 installed on my thumbdrive but not on my harddrive and the update installers DO NOT LIKE IT!). I'll try to get this figured out and report back.

If you install it, you get a new menu called "toys". Clicking on this you'll have the option of showing the toolbar or disabling it. Provided you remember to click on "save settings" right at the bottom you'll never see it! I can tell you, though, that WordToys has been rock solid under Word 2003 - I've had it installed for three years plus and have never had any problems with it. Hope it works out for you. You'll get a 30 day trial of the Pro version which will revert to the freebie if you don't pay for a licence.

It was featured on Giveawayoftheday a while back. I didn't take advantage of it... But expect that it will be offered again.

Ah, you're right Lashiec. I remember now - the chief objection was that it was/is a phenomenal waste of money given that there are free alternatives. I guess once the free patch came out development of sytleXP "styles" fell of drastically and I recall people complaining about that, too (though of course all those free styles/themes are available...).

styleXP used to have quite a following. Recently, it seems to have largely fallen from favour, though I can't offer anything other than a vague memory of having read that somewhere... So hardly the final word on styleXP!

WordToys will add tabs to MS Word. Unfortunately, its website, along with its developer have disappeared for the moment. Google it and you should be able to find a download. There are both free and shareware versions; either will give you tabs (and they're both derived from the same download).

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: RecentX for only $9.95 today - BitsDuJour.com
« Last post by Darwin on August 07, 2007, 06:34 AM »
Hmm... I feel I should amend my comments above about RecentX. Despite what the help file states, clearing your browser's cache DOES NOT remove the browsing history from within RecentX. To do this, you need to shut RecentX down and go to Drive:\Documents and Settings\UsersName\Application Data\Conceptworld\RecentX and delete* the file Websites.rxml. When you restart RecentX the webpages visited tag will be blank and the Websites.rxml file will not be recreated until you open up your browser.

If you're up to the task, you can open the rxml file in a text editor and remove any links that you don't want to be visible.

Just a heads up for the security conscious!

*Note I backed up my copy of Websites.rxml before trying the above and had no trouble restoring it.

I'm using the Royale theme on my Windows 2003 Server box. It's quite nice.

Other than that 1 box, I never use themes. I tried a few back in like 1998 or something like that, but never really got into it. The computer just does things for me, and I value the resources that it has...

Hear, hear! I couldn't agree more. This is why WindowBlinds has matured into something that I can tolerate having installed. When I DO feel the urge for a change I can apply a skin and will then bask in its new glow for an hour or a day or a week. Eventually, I tire of it and yearn for the simplicity of Windows Classic. I cycle through like this about once every 4 - 6 months (ie I spend most of my time with Windows Classic and am as happy as a lark). What makes the last builds of WB 5 and the beta of 6 nice is that it is now possible to have WindowBlinds installed but not running without resources being hogged in the background. When WB 5 first came out, this certainly was not the case.

Have you taken a look at Associate This? It works pretty well.
5193
I own a WindowBlinds license but don't use it except when I get a brief episode of Vista jealousy :)

I haven't tried the beta, but found that WB5 although a huge improvement to previous versions still did cause the odd graphical glitch - enough to be irritating.

Ampa

Heh, heh - DITTO! You've managed to sum up exactly how I feel about WB5 and 6 - I too only use it when I get a fit of Vista envy. I don't much care for many of the "windowblinds" that are available but find some of the variants of Vista pleasant for short bursts until I get tired of the darkness and/or of the glitches that you mention.
5194
I'm running the beta of WindowBlinds 6 - it's a HUGE improvement over 5, which was a HUGE improvement over 4... I don't actually have it doing anything at the moment - I tend to favour the Windows Classic look, but have used WB 6 on and off over the last few weeks and have had not real issues with it. My main beef is that some menus are slow to display when running it and that there can be artifacts. I would hope the artifacts would be dealt with before a final release. Stardock are pretty good about releasing updates and bug fixes, so I'm not that worried.

Ken - like you I have a copy of Notezilla (won it here! Thank you Carl and ConceptWorld!) and love it. RecentX clears itself whenever you clear the MRU menus via windows cleanup (or whatever app - CrapCleaner for example - that you use) so privacy is an issue in the sense that people can access your documents but it isn't really any more insecure than a standard windows installation. In a way, it's almost a security feature because you can SEE what links are being retained in your registry, all in one place. "My recent documents" is a bit hit and miss in this regard in that it reliably displays recent Office docs but is not so reliable in linking to recent non-office files (strangely it's good about zip and exe files - go figure) even if they are contained in MRU entries in your registry. You can also use RecentX to clear them all... I dunno, as I said, I go for ages without even running it (for now have autostart disabled) but will then run into a situation where it is just the ticket. I like it because, as noted above, it places EVERYTHING in one location and organises them as well (tabs for Files, Folders, Webpages, etc.).

I've got a copy. It captures a lot more "stuff" than "My Recent Documents" does and is quite light on resources. I don't know how indispensible it is - it depends on your usage, I guess. I go for ages without using it and then little flurries where it comes in REALLY handy.

YMMV

Here is what you're looking for, Curt, However, I suspect that your ISP address is being "read" by the site and you are being directed to the Swedish language version that way.
