My experience with System Restore was not good - usually wound up messing things up more than helping... I've long since gone with a combo of Acronis True Image and Genie Backup Manager Pro to get me out of jams... Doesn't help the OP much, though. I'd suggest (late as I am to the discussion) setting a Restore Point before restoring and backing the file up somewhere so that if things are even more messed up than before the restore you can get back to your original starting point. I realize that the above is the textual equivalent of me mumbling with a mouth full of dry oats but hope the overall message made it through... I'm not too erudite at the best of times; today is a particularly bad day (up since 3 am)!

I'm all for apps leaving my registry alone and writing settings to an ini file. Great idea. Placing the .ini file in my user/application data/app name folder makes sense. Like others here, this idea appeals to me because it would make it that much easier to install apps to a thumbdrive and take them with me.

Renegade ranted:

Ok - 1 problem with this thread - Browsers & Email clients - They're always going to be in there and not very interesting. I wish the topic were "Top 3 programs you use Plus your Email client & Browser..."

Agreed!

Allow me to amend my top 3:

1. Directory Opus
2. ClipMate 7 ( :-[ sorry mouser!)
3. Roboform

Should mention that GOMPlayer makes an excellent audio player, in addition to playing video files. As noted above, though, I use XMPlay, primarily...

Not what you're after (exactly) but Vista Start Menu and True Lauch Bar will accomplish much of what you desire and both come in freeware (though functionally limited) versions.

Yeah, IE plugins don't work (at least until now), but roboform's lower toolbar works, only the native support is not available, Use the system tray icon of roboform to attach it to Maxthon's windows...

Yeah, I'm aware of the workaround, but I hate running the Roboform sys tray icon (hogs precious resources and if I'm running M2 there are even more resources drifting away!). Yes, I know - I'm high maintenance! I'm confident that these issues will be resolved over time and comtent to bide my time.

Welcome ralf, mandork and mi-ling. I'm sure I've greeted Mandork in another thread already, but thought I'd shout out a big hello here as well! As a fellow PhD sufferer student I can assure mandork that participation here will take time away from your PhD. However, I prefer to view this site and my participation here as therapeutic and BENEFICIAL rather than negative  ;)

Yup, I'm with Curt on this one. Another biggie for me is that a number of IE plugins that I like and use under 1.6.1 aren't supported under M2 and/or aren't as nice to use under M2 (Roboform, for example. Netsnippets is on that I simply cannot get to work. Period.). These are deal breakers for me, for now. M2 is installed but I am not using it, still defaulting to M 1.6.1   :-*

Another thought: I wonder if the hotkey and autohide requirements might be good candidates for a coding snack?

Dang! Have you contacted the Actual Tools development team?  They seem quite eager to keep their product trouble free and were most helpful to me when I was trialing Window Manager up to and beyond the trial ending and my not purchasing the software. Anyway, looking at their forums the issues being reported seem to relate mostly to dissatisfaction with the graphics (which are apparently due to Microsoft not releasing specifics about the new Vista API) and I'm sure they'd be interested in hearing about the problem that you've encountered.

In no particular order:

Outlook 2003
Maxthon 1.6
EDIT: Don't know how I missed DOpus 9!

For the final app, it's a toss up between:
Evernote 2.1
Word 2003
ZuluPad Pro

I've tried foobar2000 but it's footprint, even in a pretty standard installation was obscene (can't remember specifics - RAM, CPU, or VM?).

Ah crap! I should have made that connection - I love the FSM! (Note to self: when looking for the correct mini-banner to click on, click on the one that has the SAME initials as the mystery acronym... that way you won't waste five minutes staring at tinjaw's Last.fm page going "WTF?"  :-[).

OK. I give. Who or what is FSM?!

Carl - thank you for all the effort that you put into this. The contests are great and the discounts wonderful (though they tend to fill me with dread more than wonder because I know that my wallet is going to be lightened!).

Take your time!

I use this moderately effective driver update program called Driver Genius Professional. It's a commercial app that was in the version 6.x range when I bought it. I received a couple of program updates which installed and ran normally. Then they decided to get greedy (and stupid)--they slipped in a newer "pay again" version 7 as an update. I downloaded and installed it only to find my product just reverted to trialware!

Man did this tick me off! To have a paid-for product suddenly go trial, with no warning or opportunity to install in parallel, that's unethical and sleazy. So I promptly yanked the new version off and reinstalled the older version (which I kept a copy of luckily, as the vendor had thoughtfully removed from their web site).

Incidentally, this happened to me as well but I contacted the developer and was sent a new key for v.7. I've subsequently uninstalled it because it seems a bit pointless to me (but then I'm on a notebook that is three years old). __fool__ __ money__ __ __. I'll let you fill in the blanks.

Please keep your comments germane to the topic, which is feature requests. I don't care about which media player or other utilities you are using. It's annoying to be notified of additions to this topic and come to read personal off topic chitchat.

Ouch! Spanked!

Now a feature request (to keep this post germane): I'd like to be able to create different profiles for PT so that, depending on what I am using my computer for, I can set the priorities for running processes accordingly. Just a thought...

EditPad Pro and UltraEdit 32 cover most of your list save the autohide/autodock feature. They both allow you to run regex searches, highlight text, configure external tools and feature tabbed interfaces. I am less sure about the hotkey requirement. As for the autohide/autodock feature but you might look to Actual Tools and Stardock as one or the other of them may offer a solution. Stardock has a simple text editor of its own that is part of Object Desktop called Object Edit. It will highlight syntax and so on, but it is much less feature rich than either EditPad or UltraEdit.

I suspect that these options may well be overkill for you, but offer them nonetheless...  ;)

The best thing about DirectAccess (other than its very helpful and friendly developer of course!) has got to be the fact that it plays nice with other macro tools. I used to use ActiveWords (still have it installed, actually) but it wouldn't co-exist happily with a range of macro addins for Office apps nor with various other applications. That and the pace of development is glacial...

OK 'nuff said. I love DirectAccess! Thanks Andrea!

Sadly, I guess you're right, app, though I was questioning why anyone would post such a request in the donationcoder forums in particular, not forums in general (I've seen LOTS of such requests elsewhere as well). Still, you've addressed all my points!

I'm using XMPlay as my default player myself, along with MusicIP Mixer, though I also use GOMPlayer, WMP 11 and iTunes. I'm keen to see what MusicIP Mixer 1.8 looks like as changes are promised for the handling of playlists that if delivered upon will likely see me switching to it as my default player.

What I like about XMPlay is its small footprint and to my tin ear it sounds great!
