Living Room / Re: Wikileaks - Julian Assange Granted Asylum by Ecuador
« Last post by Renegade on August 21, 2012, 08:53 AM »
I guess Renegade, that the reason I spoke up - not a smart move - is that the Assange debate seems to run precisely along the lines of claims of "assassination/indefinite detention/torture/whatever" which suggests the extreme possibilities whilst only factually based on the "whatever" possibility. ie the debate is not centred on fact but emotive claims and innuendo. Thus whipping up outrage and condemnation for no rational reason.
This is not to suggest the USA shouldn't be yelled at for other things. In my youth I found it quite fun, but then I aged and got too lazy to yell at anyone
Disclosure: I hate all self appointed, evangelical, holier than thou proselytizers like Assange. Give me Elmer gantry any day

He's certainly abrasive at times.

I probably shouldn't have posted that above. I just meant it in fun. I just couldn't resist the whole "trial" and "fantasy" thing. It was begging for a smartass comment~! :D

OTOH I dont think Assange can be fussy at this stage, what exactly he's facing can be argued, but I certainly wouldnt expect a fair trial (if any)

But what fair trial are you referring to? The ONLY trial we can say with certainty that he's facing is the Swedish one. So projecting to a USA trial at this stage is fantasy.

+1 Julian Assange would have no hope of a trial as instead of the clang of a gavel, he'd hear the clang of a cell door in Gitmo. Trial for JA? Yep. Total fantasy~! ;D :D

Re Correa & corruption:
http://en.wikipedia....g/wiki/Rafael_Correa
Paragraph three will give you a summary. (Paragraphs 1 & 2 are interesting from other perspectives.)

OTOH I dont think Assange can be fussy at this stage, what exactly he's facing can be argued, but I certainly wouldnt expect a fair trial (if any).

[Just to put my comment in perspective - I'm not a fan of Wikileaks]

I really don't know enough to comment, but I do wonder who those media organizations are owned/operated by. e.g. http://2.bp.blogspot...-moguls-1200x849.jpg

(I have less than zero sympathy for big media. But the "why" there belongs in the Basement. :) )

Ok ok ok!

"assassination/indefinite detention/torture/whatever" - How about we focus on the "whatever" part. ;)

FWIW - US policy now allows for the murder/assassination of US citizens (example more). NDAA allows for indefinite detention (1 source of many). The US is well known for supporting and engaging in torture (at Wikipedia, lots of search results). The point being that they will do "whatever" they darn well feel like.

Anyone in Julian Assange's position that didn't dirty their pants in fear would be a complete fool.

I was originally trying to make the point that in his position, it would be a good idea to take any help you can get! (I should have left out "calling for".)

The reason they can get away with this is complacency. If hundreds of thousands of people expressed their displeasure by no longer using Google Search, what would happen? But that won't occur, because the masses are ignorant.

I hate to say it, but you're right. But I also think that more people are becoming more aware of issues like this.

Like I mentioned above, I've switched to DuckDuckGo and am quite pleased with it. Again... voting with $$$/actions. I'm just one person, but that goes for everyone - and the more people that act despite "just being one person", the better.

Google previously stated that it would only base search results based on relevance.

When did they say this exactly?

Waaaaaayyyyy back in the stone age of the interwebs. 1990's sometime. It's the main reason that I started using Google.

Ah... so it's the fear of collateral damage.

Is the fear well-founded? I suppose we'll find out at some point... Dunno.

But this is truly a watershed event. This is entirely about money. Where will you spend it? Google is taking it upon themselves to go back on their principle of search results based on relevance and moving entirely over to a paid model. If I'm looking for an "LG air conditioners" and they only show results for companies that have paid (and not LG), am I getting relevant results?

This is the main "front" - shopping. If they'll do it here, I'm willing to bet that they will "relax" their criteria for "relevance" elsewhere.

I hope I'm wrong.

A valid fear if they were not kept in check.  But they aren't unassailable, and Bing is a good alternative, as well as others, so I think that if they did make that change, they'd be shooting themselves in the foot.  They're doing to a certain extent it seems what Microsoft has done to such good effect- and gotten 'slapped on the wrist' a few times for doing- leveraging the popularity of their platform to gain traction.  The difference is that they are now trying to turn that traction into actual dollars, and I don't think that Microsoft was ever as obvious about what they were doing when they made that transition.

My primary search engine now is DuckDuckGo, and I'm quite happy with it. It's certainly not Google, but it's darn good for the vast majority of searches that I do, and when I need, I simply use another search engine (usually Google).

I like to vote with my $$$ whenever possible. I like to buy from companies that are ethical and that genuinely have the interests of their customers as their top (or a very high) priority. I like to have faith in companies and to believe that I can trust them. However, they are few and far between now. I also dislike having to do so much research into companies to find out what they are like - it takes too much effort, but is often necessary.

I am going to take a minority opinion here and state that Google has every right to make Froogle into a search engine for ads: after all, some of the sites I depend on are basically that: pricewatch.com and dealnews.com. However those are a little more narrowly focused on tech products, and that's probably why I find them useful.

The big problem that I see is based on obsolete concepts that are no longer used or relevant today:

Honest
Accountability
Trust

Google previously stated that it would only base search results based on relevance. Going with paid placement now makes them liars. That's a violation of trust and dishonest. They have failed to be accountable to their customers by violating that trust.

I suppose that it's ok for corporations to lie to customers. So, in a way, yeah... they have a right to lie, cheat, and deceive just like any other corporation. (Scorpion and frog again. :) +1 for 40hz there.)

It's too bad that when people lie it's fraud. It would be nice to have a level playing field.

That said, I don't think I will be using the new Google products search site for general not-necessarily-tech items. For now I am using PriceGrabber (which also accepts advertising) instead. Any other suggestions for alternative sites? Seems like they all accept advertising, are there any that show unadvertised items as well?

There are some really good price comparison sites out there. I generally go for local ones though as I like to buy in stores rather than online unless I can get a significantly better price online, e.g. I won't fuss over the difference for $100 in a store and $95 online. Shipping usually ends up costing more anyways, and I have to wait. I oh so wish that I could download hardware and groceries... :D

if I had the world's largest super-power calling for my assassination/indefinite detention/torture/whatever
I only heard the "whatever" bit from news channels... the other bits I've heard claimed by his supporters and/or himself.
Would like a reference to where the USA govt has called for his assassination as you allege though.

http://en.wikipedia....ge.27s_assassination

What i meant though is that for a guy campaigning for freedom of information, he's sure allied himself with the antithesis of that in such a  media repressive leader as Correa

Your turn to dig up a link! :) (Seriously - I know jack about Ecuador there.)

Assange in bed with Correa???? A tad hypocritical?

Not sure what you mean there. Then again, I'm not really much of an expert (or even amateur) on Ecuador.

But I know that if I had the world's largest super-power calling for my assassination/indefinite detention/torture/whatever, I'd probably take whatever help I could get~! :D

General Software Discussion / Re: VLC - Is it worth it still?
« Last post by Renegade on August 20, 2012, 10:18 PM »
I've really not had many codec problems in the last however-many years. I use 2 video players: ALShow and VLC. 99.9% of the time I use ALShow. However, there are rare cases when I use VLC.

(Disclosure: I used to work for ESTsoft, the maker of ALShow.)

But I find ALShow is MUCH easier to use than VLC. It also has codec detection, and if the proper codec isn't already installed, which is rare for ALShow in my experience, then it automatically prompts you to download the right codec, which eliminates farting around trying to figure out what codec/pack you need.

You're like the 5th person to tell me that.  I'm so going there soon.

Be forewarned... If you try to look at all the pretty girls, you WILL break your neck or at a minimum get whiplash. If you don't believe me, then go ahead -- just post back from your hospital room so I can say, "I told you so!"

Oh, and make sure to get into the Yonsei Severance hospital in Gangnam on Eonjuro as it is an excellent one. Don't go to Cha hospital, as it's a women's hospital and you'll only further exacerbate your neck injury.

There's a reason that song was written... ;) Eye-candy! Lots and lots of eye-candy! ;D

To update your sound card drivers, check the hardware first, then search at the vendor's site. You can find the hardware under "devices":

Start > Control Panel > Devices > Sound, video and game controllers

Or something like that.

Your card vendor should have the download available.

But DO check the cabling. You can get weirdness from bad cables or bad connections.
5171
you obviously have a different history to me.
Was only around the age of 30 that I started getting closer to my parents. And I know lots like me, guess that's why I found the "article" amusing.

Ah. Got it.

I haven't lived in the same country (or time zone) since early 1996. So, it makes it a bit hard to keep in touch. But compared to most people I know, I still have a better relationship with my parents. I kind of take that for granted sometimes.

EBay Bans Sale Of Spells, Hexes

Company Also Eliminating Category Listings For Psychic Readings, Tarot Card Sessions

Beginning in September, the site is banning the sale of "advice, spells, curses, hexing, conjuring, magic, prayers, blessing services, magic potions, [and] healing sessions," according to a policy update.
The company is also eliminating its category listings for psychic readings and tarot card sessions.
The update is a part of a "multi-year effort...to build trust in the marketplace and support sellers," eBay wrote in its company blog.
Has anyone actually been buying magic on eBay? It seems so: The site's "spells and potions" category currently has more than 6,000 active listings and happy feedback from quite a few satisfied buyers.

A psychic/magic auction site could do very well.

Not sure, but it could be a sound card driver. Try updating yours to see if that helps. (It's rare, but happens.)
