PopUp Wisdom / Error: Cannot make a visible window modal
« Last post by app103 on October 08, 2006, 10:13 AM »
If you have the preferences window open, and the wisdom window pops up, when you click OK it minimizes both and you can't get the preferences window to show again.

Shows this error:
popup wisdom error.png

If you leave it alone after that, the next wisdom window will also show the preferences window again. You can click OK on the preferences window before clicking OK on the wisdom window, at that time, to fix it and it will work fine again.

Or you have to force it to show another wisdom window so you can get the preferences window back and click OK on it.

it certainly is buggy.

edit.

may as well just say it's unusable. too much conflict with the rest of the operating system. how unfortunate.

Yeah...my thoughts after trying it, too. But I'll keep my eyes on this one, for sure. It's exactly what I was thinking of when I made my request for an app that could tab a bunch of windows for me.

So if he can get the bugs out, it will be perfect for me.

If you feel like having something to listen to, I have created a rather eclectic mixed bag music station on pandora.com, based on some of my favorite artists.

http://www.pandora.c...sh155954033507829735

Everything from screaming hard rock to some rather mellow new age type stuff...old and new.

I am listening to "Tangerine Dream - Rubycon" right now.   :-*

Someone emailed me a link to something that might be what you are looking for:

http://www.wintabber.com

What is WinTabber ?

Do you get frustrated trying to find the right window on your desktop, or with alt-tab but they all look the same?
WinTabber may be the answer ....

WinTabber can add tabs to many windows. A tabbed browser ,tabbed putty , tabbed terminal or tabbed shell, tabbed anything. Multi tab your windows in seconds. A terminal or shell with tabs work faster and efficiently! Having multiple windows as tabs will give a better overview of your windows than before. Also having multiple ssh sessions by the click of a tab works faster and efficiently.

Might be what I need for filling this request too:  https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=4629.0

I haven't tried it yet but I will.

Cheat Sheeter / Re: New Program Idea: Cheat Sheeter

I was just thinking how useful it could be if when it docks at the edge of a screen, that it could autohide.  Kind of resemble another taskbar that can reveal itself when you touch the screen edge. (I still have room for 2 more. ;))

Add a button to lock it when you need it to stay on screen...click again to release and go back to hiding.

It can still have tabs...just like the old MS Office toolbar had. And let the user configure each tab with the color of their choice to make things easier to find.

It would be quickly accessable...quicker than clicking a tray icon.

And just like how the windows key will unhide the taskbar, have a hotkey that will unhide it for keyboard freaks (and one to lock/release it)

Living Room / Re: What are your favorite RSS Feeds?
« Last post by app103 on October 07, 2006, 08:43 AM »
I just talked Paul Lutus, author of Arachnophilia and the brains behind arachnoid.com, to add a feed to his site so we can all know when he writes a new essay.  :D

Okay, I did it. I added an RSS feed to my site. It is located at
http://www.arachnoid.com/feed.xml.

I hope people won't be too disappointed when it doesn't change content
on a daily, or even weekly, basis. My first impression has been
confirmed -- most RSS feeds are on fast-moving sites, and blogs, that
update content regularly.

I want to thank you for telling me about this. I knew RSS existed, but I
just hadn't thought very much about it. Please feel free to offer any
suggestions you may have about the content of my feed.

Thanks again!

Another thing I've found, is that some things I can do when a friend of mine does it, and i wouldn't do it if i were alone... i.e. that friend reduces my resistance to 0!
I think that's because i enjoy being with that friend, no matter what we are doing.

Maybe it's because misery loves company?  :P

I have noticed it works that way for me too...or not.

Sometimes we both end up doing nothing...procrastinating together.  :-[

General Software Discussion / Re: Screensaver Maker Recommendations?
« Last post by app103 on October 06, 2006, 01:50 PM »

What software do you use to make your own themes?

He was a WinME user...I was able to set the colors and export it on mine. Included the wallpaper, msn accessories, screensaver, icons, etc and just zipped it all up for him and let him worry about putting it all together.

It's not like making XP themes....9x is simple and doesn't really need any special software.

his 'articles' page is also worth reading - many of the podcasts use this material to start from. here's the link http://www.geoffthom....com/listArticle.asp

Yes, I found that...and it's great!

How about a whack-a-mole type game staring some of the forum regs...and cody and his alien peg pals?

Hitting the regs earns you CodyCoins...hitting Cody or his pals you lose coins...hitting dalmatian snakes earns you bonus coins.

You need to collect enough CodyCoins within a time limit to advance to the next round...where it just gets faster & faster.

Not sure about the setting...maybe the inside of a pc case with people popping up from behind things?

He had a way of destroying computers just by using them for five minutes, and not actually do anything wrong. I could watch him and he wouldn't be doing anything I wouldn't do and all sorts of error messages would pop up or it would crash.

That's known as Negative Electrostatic Charisma (NEC). It's when you are cursed by the computer gods and freaky things happen that shouldn't...with no reasonable explanation.

My dad says it comes from doing something that offends the computer gods and in retaliation they put this curse upon you for the rest of your life, and to all your offspring (it becomes genetic).

It's the only explanation I can give for why pc's running win2k have a BSOD if my daughter gets within a foot of them....and why portable CD players go crazy and spin disks at hyperspeed when she uses them....and digital cameras shorting out when she turns them on.

I was almost believing it skipped a generation and then remembered how I was stuck using a P1 that said "NEC Ready" on the case for 3 years (oh, the irony!), because my P3 died immediately after I hit the backspace key in notepad.  :-[

Oh, yeah...and my dad...

Windows forgot his pass was supposed to work, for a day...locked him out of the pc...then remembered the next and worked just fine. Only 1 of a series of weird experiences I have seen happen to my dad.

To have a myspace account and get involved with the social stuff is something I would never do...you'd have to shoot me first.

But...

Myspace is a great source for free legal .mp3 files. Lots of bands post their stuff there for download. I have found a lot of great music there.

It's almost like what mp3.com used to be.

http://www.myspace.c...cfm?fuseaction=music

Pick your genre...explore the bands...download free songs (at the very least, if the band doesn't offer files to download you can still get to listen)

« Last post by app103 on October 06, 2006, 03:56 AM »
I agree with everyone else here. Drop the class, and still attend the lectures as suggested by the professor.

It is much easier to do well when you are ahead than when you are behind. Taking the professor's advice will put you ahead and make the class easier to pass.

And consider this...you are paying to take the class...if you fail you will have to take it again and pay twice. Might as well pay once and pass.

If the calc class is the only one you will be taking in the summer, you can give it much more attention, since you won't have other classes to divide your time between. That alone will make it easier to pass.

I used to do something like that when I was a kid...but mine was much more low tech...

a piece of cardboard with holes for 4 markers...sort of looked like a little table...and for the motor I set it on the washing machine during the spin cycle. The vibrations made the thing move.  :D

« Last post by app103 on October 04, 2006, 09:07 AM »
not sure if i'm really saying anything here but i've not looked at digg since the DC GTD experiment started - i've not even thought about looking at it. it doesn't feel like i'm missing out on anything either.

Only thing you are missing is how incredibly slow pages load and how many times they don't load at all unless you refresh multiple times.

Not much of a loss, if you ask me.

If you are trying to get things done, playing with digg and trying to get it to work wastes valuable time you could be spending on better things...like more fantastic Cody wallpapers.
