Anyone want to go in on a 2-pack together and get it for a huge discount of $22.50 (each copy)?

One problem I've often had with SpiderOak is that when I'm selecting files and folders to backup, it will mess up and unselect or re-select folders, or sometimes select folders I never wanted selected in the first place. This can sometimes lead to it attempting to recursively backup large directories and all it's subdirectories (like my User directory). Maybe you should check to make sure something like that didn't happen.

Living Room / Re: How viable is using ads as way to monetize a web service?
« Last post by Deozaan on July 08, 2011, 04:24 PM »
Actually, I guess I should mention that I am also considering having user accounts. If so I'd probably want/try to use OpenID or something.

The idea I've got isn't really a use-it-once-and-then-never-think-of-it-again-type site. Though I suppose it could be. I think that potentially a lot of people will use it perhaps several times a year. It won't be something that people come back to every day. But I think it will be something a lot of people use off and on throughout the year.

On the other hand, I get the feeling that nobody will be clicking on ads. I know I never do.

Also, I'm unsure if you mean a website (web app) or a web-service (web service typically refers to some sort of API).

I guess what I mean by web service is something similar to what you've got there with your web sites.

Just a website where people can do something useful real quick. Nothing incredibly complex AFAICT.

Living Room / How viable is using ads as way to monetize a web service?
« Last post by Deozaan on July 08, 2011, 02:24 PM »
Hi folks,

I've recently had an idea for a web service that I think many people would find very useful. However, due to the nature of the service, I'm not sure I could (or even want to) get away with charging people to use it. On the other hand, I would like to monetize it if possible and I think it may eventually get a lot of traffic. So that leads me to consider putting up ads on the site.

Does anybody here have experience with advertisements as a source of income? I'm not expecting to get rich off of the revenue, or even live off of it, but it would be nice to know I could make an extra $50 a month or so (depending on traffic) just from putting some ads on the site.

Opinions? Insights? Feedback is appreciated.

Living Room / Re: 64 Bit OS - When to Switch ?
« Last post by Deozaan on July 08, 2011, 01:45 PM »
My only 2 complaints/problems I've had with 64-bit OS since Vista x64 are:

1. Drivers MUST be signed to be installed (technically there are workarounds, but they're a hassle). My hardware is a bit older and there are no 64-bit drivers for e.g. my onboard ethernet. So I'm currently running 32-bit OS.

2. No more 16-bit compatibility. I've really only had one scenario in which this was a problem. I dusted off an old Win95 game I used to love and it can't play in 64-bit OS. Though Windows 7 does come with a free VM of Windows XP 32-bit and I could play the game in that. But unfortunately my PC is too old and slow, so I run into problems. I think I might have better luck with it playing it in a Linux VM under Wine.

Modern hardware will fix problem #1 and probably also run well enough to make the Windows XP VM solution to #2 viable as well. That's why I say if you've got modern hardware and don't use any "legacy" accessories (printers, cameras, etc.) then there is no reason not to be on a 64-bit OS these days.

I'm back down to 8GB, which the SpiderOak app has been telling me is the maximum amount of free space I can have.

I thought the referral page said you could get up to 50GB of free space from referrals?

EDIT: from the spideroak front page:

You think the acting is terrible?

I don't. I haven't listened to it yet because of the review that mouser posted (emphasis added):

The characters are believable, the story is intense, and the acting is... well, OK, the acting often blows.

When I read that I thought it sounded really terrible and I didn't want to give it a try.

I can make you one if you want me to. You only need it in your inventory to get the achievement and as long as you don't equip it, you can trade it to other people.

It's nice to see I'm not the only weirdo who doesn't like letting people online know my real name. A Google search of my real name results in very few valid hits. And that is also by design.

Most of them are from those "people finder" websites that somehow know all about me and my family. But you gotta pay money to get the details.

A Google search for "Deozaan" on the other hand... AFAIK every single one of them is me.

My opinion is that by now there's no reason not to use a 64-bit OS if you have modern hardware. The only reason I can see for staying on 32-bit is if you have old hardware or accessories (old printer or cameras, etc.) that don't (and will never) have proper 64-bit drivers.

I heard that Google+ is now open for anyone to join, as long as you have a Google account. But I haven't found anything to verify it.

False alarm. Sorry.

N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Release: Trout (audio player)
« Last post by Deozaan on July 06, 2011, 05:01 PM »
I just found a bug:

I added my main "My Music" folder with thousands of songs, and while it was slowly adding each track one at a time I changed my mind and decided to just listen to one specific folder. So I selected "Clear list and add folder" and selected the folder containing the music I wanted.

It added all the music I selected, but then I noticed it kept adding more that I hadn't selected. Well, it turns out that it was finishing up the first command I gave it to add the entirety of "My Music." Expected behavior when selecting "Clear list and add folder" is to stop any previous playlist additions.

In fact, going to "Edit -> Clear playlist" also results in everything being cleared, but Trout happily continuing on with its job of adding everything it hadn't finished yet. This is bad because my computer is slow and it takes a long time to go through all those directories.

Yeah, I just tested it again on a smaller backup. The first time I setup a backup to copy only specific files and folders, it will revert back to copying all files and folders. Then when I go into the settings to change it back to copying only specific files and folders it will erase all the filters.

Buggy. I hope this is fixed in Bvckup 2. ;)

I'm using the admin account. It never popped up UAC to ask permission to install to C:\Program Files\. I had to run it as administrator and then manually tell it to install to Program Files, IIRC.

But that's not important.

I'm getting really frustrated trying to get a specific backup to work. Basically, I want to backup all of my game data from games that save into My Documents.

So I made a new backup, told it to be include only selected files and folders. Then I manually typed in, one by one, each folder (subdirectory of source folder) I wanted it to backup. That took a few minutes and was time consuming, but had to be done. Then I let it run.

It copied every single file and every single subdirectory from the source directory.

So I went and looked at the settings for the backup and somehow it had switched itself back to backup "Everything with optional exceptions." So I clicked the radio button to change it back to backup only "Selected files and directories" and when I did that all of my filters were immediately removed from the list. It completely blanked them out.

So I decided to do a little test and only tell it to backup a couple of specific directories instead of typing them all out again only to have it break again. So I typed a couple out and it started copying directories and files that I didn't explicitly include.

So then at the top of the list I put a filter to exclude everything (blank Location, * for Name). Then I tested a couple directories and it appeared to work. So then I typed in the rest of the directories I wanted it to include and it started copying over more directories that I didn't tell it to.

I've been messing around with this for way too long and I can't get it to work. It doesn't seem to make any sense. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but there doesn't seem to be any indication of when it will decide to work and when it will decide to start copying things over it shouldn't.

Here's a screengrab of part of my list. What am I doing wrong?

Lotsa necroposting lately too! What's up with that?  ;D

It's not always obvious to newcomers that some threads are really old and dead. I did the same thing when I was a DC noob. I later learned to look at the dates before posting. Or maybe I just started using the "Unread Posts" feed so that only recent/active threads came up on my display.
