General Software Discussion / Re: Can I uninstall .NET Framework 1.1 and 2.0 ??

apropos the thread's subject:

Remove or Reinstall .NET Framework

net-framework-remove-reinstall.png

The other day I was having troubles with one of my machines regarding the .NET framework. As you probably already know many Windows applications require that you have a specific version of the .NET framework installed (1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, etc…) in order for them to function properly. Unfortunately Microsoft doesn’t make it very easy to repair or reinstall the .NET framework should it decide to go haywire on you.

The first thing I tried to do is uninstall .NET through the add/remove interface with the hopes of reinstalling it again once that completed. Those hopes were quickly dashed once the uninstall process failed miserably, and left me with a half-installed product that didn’t work. To make matters worse I couldn’t reinstall the .NET framework since the computer was saying that it was already installed, and repairing it was never offered as an option.

I began searching around the Internet to find out that I was far from the only person finding themselves in this little crisis. While looking for a solution I stumbled upon a handy little tool created by a Microsoft employee that will cleanup any .NET installations you have on your machine. It removes both both files and registry settings that .NET creates when it is installed on a computer, but it is recommended that you try to use the standard add/remove programs interface before resorting to this.

What makes this tool so nice is the fact that you can have it remove one specific version of .NET, or remove all of them at once. Just select the corresponding option from the drop-down menu, and you’ll be on your merry little way.

Not everyone may have the same problem I did, but it’s obvious that issues like this are fairly widespread. Maybe Microsoft will fix this in future releases of .NET, but this is one tool I’ll always keep handy.

There are a couple of very important caveats that you should read before using this tool to cleanup .NET Framework bits on your machine:

   1. This tool is designed as a last resort for cases where install, uninstall or repair did not succeed for unusual reasons.  It is not intended as a substitute for the standard uninstall procedure.  You should try to perform an uninstall from Add/Remove Programs before using this cleanup tool.
   2. This cleanup tool will delete shared files and registry keys used by other versions of the .NET Framework.  If you run the cleanup tool, you will need to perform a repair or reinstall for all other versions of the .NET Framework that are on your computer to get them to work correctly afterwards.

hmm... are not this two different things - reading the drive, and reading the content of documents? Doesn't the indexer sort of has to open each and every document, before being able to read it? This thought was why I was thinking that it actually COULD be fast, because I have no clue about what it takes to index the content of documents.

Thanks, f0dder, but...  Of course I must first pardon me for having used the wrong words, indexing and scanning are not the same. Sorry! And then I ask: How fast is this "indexing speed: 1 GB per hour", compared to other documents'_content indexers (if there are any)?
5106
For example the image manager is no ACDSee but it is pretty nice and easier to use for a novice

Yes, Photo Commander 7 really is nice and easy, and its quality in general is fine. However: Some months ago I was on a major hunt for a program to use to add frames to some images, and on this hunt I also came across my own Photo Commanders, version 6 and version 7. Because I had both, I know for a fact that they have not added a single frame or framing feature, when they upgraded version 6 to 7. But still this particular part of the otherwise nice and capable program, is a total embarrassment to the company! How on earth did the programmer get the bizarre idea that it is the photo that must fit the frame and not the frame that should fit the photo??!!! The framing part of Ashampoo Photo Commander is not even a bad joke, it is merely an insult to the user!
 >:(

Edited:
I just realize WHY they temporally have abandoned this part of their program:
They are trying to give me a reason to upgrade to version 8 with many useful frames!!!

I was reading about the features, when I saw this:

Indexing speed:
1Gb per Hour (this value can be influenced by Computer performance)

- and my interest disappeared...

On second thought, I realize that it is the content of documents, it is scanning at 1 GB per hour, so maybe the indexing speed really is okay? What do "you" think?  :tellme:

Announcing Undelex
----------------------------------------------------------------

We are working on a classic undelete utility. It works similar to the Windows Explorer recycle bin but it will protect files deleted by any program. And it will allow you to set rules on the type of files you would like to have protected and which not. Also it will protect files deleted on remote network drives.

We know there are already quite a few of such utilities but we found none of which we think they work the way they are supposed to work.

This product is not yet ready, but we have released the driver source code of its core component.

... but consider it a waste of money... I also have WinOptimizer 5 installed but, like you, rarely, if ever, use it. I have nothing particularly damning to say about it other than that I don't really trust the tweaks it offers to make on my Vista system...

Yes, they were right not to call the new Uninstaller for Platinum, so now you know what their next program will be: Uninstaller 3 Platinum...
What goes for WinOptimizer version 6: Have you been offered an upgrade? Because I haven't -  and it puzzles me. So much in fact that I wrote the company and asked why! Of course not because I want to upgrade (? ha!) but because I was miffed. Having Yiggles-Status: GOLD (like you, or have you already joined the next upper club?) I would expect to be offered an upgrade even before the official launching.

Another thing is, that I don't understand how you can be so patient as to actually USE their Uninstaller. All that scanning got on my nerves, and I lost my temper and removed it.

---

I have replaced their Office packet with the original from SoftMakers.
5115
Usually when a company produces upgrades that often they are not adding that much into the versions. I doubt if there is a world of difference between ver 5 and ver 6. Just say no!

No!

Well, it actually is becoming a quite diverged but still also a quite capable program. I have nothing really bad to say about their programs. They are not all that great, but they are somehow still quite good at the same time. Simple high tech for the common man, if ever there was such? But I certainly agree with you, on their marketing strategy!

General Software Discussion / Never again will I purchase that shampoo! (or will I?)
« Last post by Curt on December 17, 2008, 05:44 PM »
I am not too sure when I installed my first version of Ashampoo WinOptimizer, but I made the first upgrade to version 4 19-September-2007 when it maybe was no longer all new, I don't remember exactly. But I do remember that I upgraded to a brand new version 5, 02-April-2008. Today's updated version is 5.10, but now, December 2008, precisely eight month later, they have launched version 6! Really!! I am outraged (I must clarify that a license is "major version limited"). This is simply the same as to take a pi** on their customers!!! (You can, though, keep using version 4 or version 5 as you please).

The "funny" part is that I never use the program. I just purchase any new version in order to have it as updated and capable as possible! Yeah, I know - the fool is me, isn't it. I hate this company. But somehow I expect I soon will be the owner of WinOptimizer 6, and then forget about it until version 7 calls, by the end of next summer!

General Software Discussion / New Resplendence freeware: WhoCrashed
« Last post by Curt on December 17, 2008, 06:16 AM »
New Resplendence freeware is WhoCrashed:

WhoCrashed reveals the drivers responsible for crashing your computer

Whenever a computer running Windows suddenly reboots without displaying any notice or blue screen of death, the first thing that is often though about is a hardware failure. In reality, most crashes are caused by malfunctioning device drivers and kernel modules. In case of a kernel error, most computers running Windows do not show a blue screen unless they are configured to do so. Instead these systems suddenly reboot without any notice.

WhoCrashed shows the drivers which have been crashing computer with a single click. In most cases it can pinpoint the offending drivers which have been causing misery on your computer system in the past. It does post-mortem crashdump analysis and presents all gathered information in a comprehensible way.

Normally, debugging skills and a set of debugging tools are required to do post-mortem crash dump analysis. By using this utility you do not need any debugging skills to be able to find out what drivers are causing trouble to your computer.

Note

Note that WhoCrashed cannot be always 100% sure about the drivers which are responsible for crashing your computer. Because all kernel modules run in the same address space, a kernel module is able to corrupt another. Also, a driver may be able to cause problems to another driver which runs in the same device stack. So keep in mind this software is not guaranteed to identify the culprit in every case but most often it does.

WhoCrashed relies on the Windows Debugging Package (WinDbg) from Microsoft. If this is not installed, WhoCrashed will download and extract this package automatically for you.

Almost new Resplendence €25/$30 payware is SanityCheck 1.01:

SanityCheck Introduction

SanityCheck is an advanced rootkit and malware detection tool for Windows which thoroughly scans the system for threats and irregularities which indicate malware or rootkit behavior. « Last post by Curt on December 12, 2008, 04:03 AM »
I thank you very much, Sarah, for the detailed direction.
However, this feature is for a TouchPad on a Notebook only. It is not a standard feature in general, and I don't have it (yet) on my "stationary".

No, tomos, it wasn't skrommel's DragLock I had seen, but it does exactly what I was asking for, doesn't it, so why go to the end of the world when the answer is to be found in my backyard! THANKS, tomos, and THANKS, skrommel!

Edited: No, sorry, that was not the FINAL answer to my wanting. It is not possible to change direction in the middle of a movement, as skrommel's version leaves you with Either horizontal OR vertical. I honestly *imagine* that what I saw allowed the user to go both directions without letting go, so it could be used to drag and drop, which skrommel's version really can't. But I was not in a position to ask, so MAYBE I was deluding...  Edited again: Yes, it can!: keep the mouse pressed  while letting go + pressing the hotkey again.

Some weeks ago I noticed a small program which (when hotkey was activated) would let the user move the mouse horizontal or vertical only. Normally I would grab such a program without hesitating, but I wasn't at home. Now I need such a feature, but can't remember anything at all about the name or place. Do 'you' know about such an application (for Vista), please?

General Software Discussion / HowTo set columns in Explorer Vista?
« Last post by Curt on December 11, 2008, 10:52 AM »
Question:
How do I apply the same columns to all folders in the Music directory (only)?  tellme

---
Finally my new Vista was up and running, and now it was time to listen to some music! Now, where do I want to start? Hmm..., what is that: "Genre", "Classification" (rating)? I don't want those two columns! But I do want to also see the lenght (duration?) and the file size. Okay, done. Hmm... How to make it happen to all folders in 'My Music'? Maybe if I do it in the Music directory, like this:

1columns.gif

- and remember to click "add to sub folders"?

No, wrong! The sub folders all show it the same old "wrong way" (including Genre and Klassification):
(I prefer "længde"+"størrelse" over "genre"+"classification")
2columns.gif
3columns.gif

Damn it, it can't be true, can it? Am I to manually make this setting in 2500 folders? No, of course not; even Microsoft cannot be that stupid - the stupid one must be me! I managed to ALMOST make it happen, only to realize that I had applied the same "musical" setting to all folders on the entire computer! We can't have that!

Question: How do I apply the same columns to all folders in the Music directory (only)?  :tellme:

I thought I knew the answer, but Vista has been showing me that I didn't.  :-[
