Holy crap! Zaine you gorgeous beast! I should have clicked on your data visualization link first - I've been grappling with figuring out how to visualize my PhD data for about three days and you've just dropped a wonderful overview into my lap  :-*

Interesting Mouser. Thank you for this. I attended a memorial service for a high school friend who died after being in a coma for five years (heart attack at 32) - when the time is right, I might suggest this to his wife and family.

Wow! Thanks for posting about this, Zaine. I think my morning schedule has just been borked!

Cool - thanks Tom. Looks like I'm going to be spoiled for choice here. I'll need to resist the temptation to throw money at this until I've fully researched it!

I used to have StarOffice 8 installed (academic licensing meant I got to use it for free) and it is a lot more polished that OpenOffice.org  (I had an early version of OO.org 2 installed previously). The extra fonts make a difference - one of the things that you are "paying" for is the technology for font smoothing, which makes everything look better. Compatibility with MS Office docs seemed better to me too. In the end, having Office 2003 Pro, I coudn't see the point of keeping StarOffice installed, but I was impressed. Even if I had to pay for it (what is it now - $70 or so) I would as I think it is well worth it.

PS Dirhael posted while I was typing the above - if you qualify for StarOffice academic licensing and are able to download direct from Sun, the Google Toolbar is not an issue.

SO: if you qualify for academic licensing (and their conditions are liberal and they don't make you go through any hoops to prove that you qualify) the regular download from Sun is an EXCELLENT alternative to MS Office and WordPerfect Office.

EDIT: corrected several embarrassing spelling mistakes  :-[

No worries, Ken. I suspect that Nero will pretty much do it all - and I've always wanted an excuse to try it out - I've always been with Sonic/Roxio and have never been near Nero. Thus, I am sure that it will do what I want, it just may do far, far more than I need it to!
5107
Hmm... Thanks steeladept, I'll add it to the list. AutoRunPro certainly looks like it means business!

So far, I'm looking at:

Nero
AutoRun Pro
CDMenu Pro - I found this one via Google, but haven't downloaded it yet
RecordNow 8 Deluxe - as mentioned above, I already own this but am not thrilled at the thought of reinstalling it. Same probably holds for Nero, really. Still, as noted above, why spend ~$50 for functionality that it's just possible I've already paid for?

My plan is to save the homepages for all the potential apps as a Maxthon group and then spend some time comparing them before settling on what I want to try out...

Thanks for your suggestions - please keep them coming!

PS tonsofpcs - you posted while I was typing the above - many thanks for the suggestion and no worries, I am on Windows so would welcome whatever info you can provide.
5108
Dang! I've been taking a look at xplorer2 and I'm wishing I had an excuse to download it and try it out (I don't!). MUST - MOVE - AWAY - FROM - THE - LIGHT. Oh crap, my PhD is calling me. She's a tough mistress (but not much of a temptress)...
5109
Thanks, Ken - I'll take a look. Of course, I should also dust off my RecordNow installer and take a look at that, too - I've paid for it, I'm not using it, might as well use it if it will do the job! Right, off to the NeroPortal...

Nero Ultra Enhanced Super Stupendous...

Hi all you software sages out there in Cody-land... It's a sweltering, sticky evening here in Lotus-land and my thoughts have turned to how I'm going to submit my PhD dissertation (I'm ignoring all of you who are unkindly snickering at the fact that I haven't even gotten a chapter finished yet, as acknowledging this fact is beneath my dignity and wounded pride). I'm going to try to submit a non-traditional disseration and am hoping to avoid paper altogether. I'm toying with the possibility of submitting a DVD or a CD-ROM that will autorun and present an interactive homepage that will take my readers (both of them) to areas of the project - I'm hoping to avoid the traditional, linear approach and am going for something more organic (what does this mean? I haven't a clue, but it sounds good, no?). I've got Ashampoo Burning Studio 7 loaded and a licence for RecordNow 8 Deluxe, though it is no longer installed. I've also got WinDVD Creator 2 (the freebie that came with my burner) and Windows Movie Maker. Do I have everything that I need to make a killer presentation or do any of you have any recommendations for an alternative app to do this?

Thanks,

Mike

If I could justify writing a post on it, I'll convince a bunch of people to move from Dopus to TC. BUt I can't right now, sorry...

No worries, urlwolf. I understand. I'm in thesis write up hell at the moment and keep dropping in here to get away from it. I don't have the time to write up anything very considered, either (does it show?! :P).

I have serious reservations about how zealous Apple will be to drop their pants as Microsoft have done with Vista's DRM.

:harhar: I guess I stand corrected! I have both Snag-It and BBFlashback so have no need of such a plug-in for Screencaptor, myself, but it still sounds a reasonable option to add. I guess two things spring to mind: 1. I hadn't realised that there are free alternatives to BBFlashback, etc (I bought it when I realised that the screencasting component in Snag-It is woefully inadequate for my needs, and not in a million years could I afford Camtasia!) 2. Maybe it's just me, but given the choice between installing a solid app that does screencaps and has basic screencasting capabilities and two apps to do the same thing, I'll take the single app. But then, I am contradicting myself, in a way, because I have often railed against the "everything AND the kitchen sink" approach to software coding...

Ken - I know your tongue is in your cheek/fingers are crossed when you write:

On the other hand, I barely have 600 posts (unlike most of the others commenting) and JG wants it, so ...

but don't sell yourself short! You cast a long shadow around here and your opinion is highly valued!

« Last post by Darwin on August 13, 2007, 01:21 PM »
So far my experience with the new search features have been positive!

Don't take this the wrong way, but simply getting a return on a search for terms that I KNOW are in the forums elevates this above the default search capability!
5116
nudone - as I see it, adding simple screencasting capabilities to screencaptor will allow those people who might like the functionality of a screencast application, but only use it once or twice a year, to have it without being forced to spend significant amounts of money on something that they don't actually need very often and for features that they won't need at all.
5117
You can't miss if you make this an optional plug-in, Jesse.
5118
My understanding is that Parallels allows you to run both Windows (and any windows apps under it) from within an OSX session and, as nontroppo reports above, move data between OSX and Windows apps.

Darwin,

How many file managers do you need!?  ;D You have DOpus, XYplorer, and.. more? lol. I still want to try DOpus ('cuz every one says it's so great and yadda yadda ya..), and TC.. they seem to be well known and liked by a lot of ppl.

You can never have enough File Managment...   ;D I only use DOpus. I purchased DOpus first, then DiskJockey (to get the Stellent viewers - hadn't heard of QuickView Plus at the time and Yahoo Desktop Search wasn't available), then XYPlorer. I bought XYPlorer for it's abiltity to run from USB and lifetime licence and I like it! Of course, very soon thereafter DOpus 9 came out with USB capabilities. I keep XYPlorer around and use it occasionally. I've removed TC from my system since my last post because I'm not going to buy it and I don't need it, nice though it may be!

PS I also have about 30 watches and 20 Fountain Pens - I'm a bit OC about things that I like...  :o

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Corel Educational bundles deals
« Last post by Darwin on August 13, 2007, 12:59 AM »
Canadian customers should check the Corel.ca site as often the prices there are numerically the same as the US prices but in Cdn. dollars... Of course, with the relative weakness of the US dollar, that doesn't mean quite as much these days, but it's still something!
5121
Nice review Mitz!

somebody needs to do a review of TC.
I just got it, so I'm not ready. But I did move from dopus to TC, and I think TC is king!

Heresy! OK, maybe I'm overreacting, but when you make a comment like that, urlwolf, you'd better back it up with a review!

EDIT: couldn't wait - downloaded and installed a trial. Wow. Quite impressed. I love how simple the interface is... Normally at this point I'd uninstall it (afterall, I have current licences for DOpus 9, XYPlorer, AccelMan, and DiskJockey - hasn't been installed in a couple of years - so have no need for another file manager), but Total Commander is enough fun that I'm interested in playing around with it some more.

Um... Still can't remember the other app that I was thinking of, but I note that Auto Mailer is linked to from eAnnouncer's home page for those visitors who do not use Outlook. Looks to be from the same developer...
5123
Nice review, mitzeo - congratulations! The File Management market is very competitive with both shareware and freeware alternatives available. xplorer2 looks very nice - solid.

General Software Discussion / Re: how to reduce pagefile usage?
« Last post by Darwin on August 12, 2007, 05:54 PM »
I was thinking of trying it on new computer with two drives..

The received wisdom is that if you've two physical drives, set your PF on a partition on the non-OS containing drive... Apparently, that's the way forward!

General Software Discussion / Re: how to reduce pagefile usage?
« Last post by Darwin on August 12, 2007, 01:00 PM »
Hi Tom -

I have one physical drive that I had partitioned in three about two and a half years ago. Initially I had a big partition for My Documents and user settings (like Outlook and IE), a small (@2GB) partition for my Paging File, and a medium sized partition for Windows and Programs.

I've since gotten rid of the small paging file partition altogether and have placed my paging file on the windows/programs partition. It's set to 1.5 times my RAM (so 1536MB) and is fixed in size. I don't have a paging file at all on the My Documents partition. The setup works well and is more stable than the previous one.

Caveat here: IF you try the small partition for paging file setup (assuming you've a single physical drive) MAKE SURE that it's assigned to a letter higher up the chain than any other partition as it will royally screw up programmes and settings if you decide to get rid of it later! This is because, say, you've put your My Documents folder onto partition F and your PF on E (this a lone example, from many, of what happened to me). Great! However, when you remove the PF from E and absorb partition E back into C or F, F is automatically re-labelled E and all of your links are broken. I used Partition Manager to do this and it offered, and I accepted, to fix all of the links. However, it didn't find all of them and this is where the problem came in. Hope that's clear - it took me months to fix everything  >:(
