General Software Discussion / Re: Can Vista hide certain file types only?
« Last post by Curt on December 23, 2008, 06:28 AM »
- sorry, I explained myself quite poorly, didn't I. The marking was performed manually, which was easy because of the initial Sort_By_Type. And it will do nothing to future files of the same kind; they would have to manually be marked HIDE as well. All I was trying to say is, that from the beginning I thought "oh no, now I have to right-click each and every file, in order to click the 'hide' box", but that turned out to not be the case. You can mark them all in one go, right-click, and mark HIDE - and they will ALL be hidden, even though there were several file types.

Sorry for the cluttering - I am quite busy at the moment, and a little stressed up.

UAC disabled.

Certain things in life can seem to be difficult, but turns out to be ridiculous easy if you do it the right way. The answer was of course to click "Sort By Type > Mark all non-images > Right-click any of them > Click HIDE > Use > OK". End of story. Took me 10 seconds and did not require any other program. How easy it is to use Vista - after having been thinking about the problem for hours...

.... hadn't thought of the Danish language requirement!

You started a second thought inside my little square mind, (the first one was last year): I am not going to use these computers any more - I am only whining because the old XP really isn't that old, and because I have 20 GB of irreplaceable data  out of reach  on the Win2k, which I would like to regain - so do I need a Danish CD at all? Or can I perhaps make repair-installations regardless of language, as long as it is the same version otherwise?

.xpi?
Windows cannot open that file.
FF search cannot locate such a plug-in or add-on.
"Sorry, no search results found".

.xpi is the extension for Mozilla addons. Place the file in the folder C > Program Files > Mozilla Firefox, and then open Firefox > Files > Open file... , and navigate to & open the same file, and it will install as an addon in Firefox.

This is strange. Last night I was trying to use mspaint, and for the first time (I have only had Vista for a month) it wouldn't launch! Well, I decided to sleep on it, but today the situation is the same: It will load, but not launch. And I come here to ask for help, and SKesselman is telling about the exact same problem just today! Indeed this is very strange!

Therefore I am also extra disappointed that no-one so far have been giving Sarah an answer to her initial question. Paint.NET and IrfanView are good, but nowhere near as easy to use as msPaint. I like my msPaint, and I am already missing it,  :(  and hoping for the forum to solve "our" problem!  ;)

General Software Discussion / Can Vista hide certain file types only?

I have this folder with panoramic images. I like them a lot, and am using the little but fine WPanorama screensaver (new beta today!), and all is fine. Only problem is, that when I navigate Explorer to this folder, it will show me a lot of .wxs, .wsl and .wpa files which somehow are to be used by WPanorama, and I hate the sight of them! They are not images, and they look awful when you expect to see beautiful images but are met with the look of boring file icons.

So I was hoping it somehow is possible to tell Vista to hide these file types only?  :tellme:
I am not asking to hide known file type extensions.

Thanks, Carol

- but XP still is dead.

I have no previous discs, remember? And the file that I do have has proven to contain errors, because I slipstreamed SP2 almost a year ago, and it didn't improve.

I did try to purchase a disc from MS, as you recommended, but something was wrong, I think, because I was always taken to the same page leading to nowhere. Maybe I should try again in a different way.

I am not too sure that Amazon etcetera also are offering any Danish copies, and if they do, I imagine they would be full priced, as was your link.

Hello,..to inform you about our Duplicate Image Finder. It provides no byte-by-byte comparison, it compares image content ...

"Duplicate Image Finder" = "Duplicate Image Remover = "Image Comparer", at different points in time.

For a year or so I have been using Image Comparer 3 from Bolide. I liked it well, so much  that for $34.95  I purchased a license when I replaced the old XP together with the giveawayoftheday version of IC3.

But today I decided to test the free Duplicate Cleaner. And to make a long story short, I made it search for exact copies inside a folder with 8.000 images taking up 15 GB, and Duplicate Cleaner did in 26 seconds what Image Comparer would do in 46 minutes!

But of course I must remind you that Image Comparer also will give you "almost" identical images
- which is a very fine feature!

Of course it already is dead. I have a XP machine standing which I cannot repair properly because I can't get my hands on a XP Home SP3 disc. So, dead it is.

The same goes for my 2000 Pro SP4.

@ nudone and others, are you (sometimes) running in virtual mode? If so, you could also try out QTTabbar2 ("two") from http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/otherstuff - but I haven't tried it (I can find absolutely no info on it), so I have no idea what good it may do to your wishes.

Have a look at StExBar.

Nice toolbar, Phil. And it actually will cooperate with Quizo QTTabbar!

However, my first impression is that it is a lot of fuzz to make for so few buttons. "Options, Show System Files, Console, Copy Names, Copy Path, New Folder, Rename, search-box." End of story. The renamer does not rename the marked file(s). I will have to test this toolbar for some more time to understand the good of it. Of course, these features are fine and welcome, I am merely holding back the praise because I already have Quizo's. But it sure is a fine "feature" that you can use both QTTabbar and StExBar at the same time!

a) create new folder: from a single click button and/or a shortcut of F12.
b) show/hide extension for known file types: also from a single click button toggle.

a) Yes, as a hotkey, No, not as a single click but as a 3-clicker (because the button makes you choose between a new file or a new folder)

b) No, sorry, not yet. But you are more than welcome to create it yourself ;-) or talk someone else into doing it. Quizo has just come back from his incredible long time in bed, and has already launched version 1.2.3 beta 2, so you could also try to write him and make a request.

PluginSDK is available.

Found Deals and Discounts / Stardock KeepSafe 70% off
« Last post by Curt on December 20, 2008, 07:42 PM »
I don't know if Stardock's are planning to replace KeepSafe 2.0, but until the new year they are offering a seventy percent cut down down on the asking price. 70% is a nice rebate, I would say!

http://www.stardock....s/keepsafe/index.asp

https://store.stardo...coupon=KEEPSAFE-2008
Coupon Code: KEEPSAFE-2008

KeepSafe offers a seamless way to protect all of your most important files as you work on them. It does not replace a full system backup, but rather provides protection during those times between backups and only works on files you actually change – saving disc space. An easy set-up wizard walks you through the steps in minutes so even novice computer users can begin using KeepSafe immediately.
70%KeepSafe.gif

New Features in KeepSafe 2.0:

Massively updated UI to make the app more user friendly Massively improved file recovery interface. Includes file previews (with suitable preview filters installed - usually by the app that creates the file type), and advanced filtering based on file modified date, file type, name and location.c

The ability to exclude an application from KeepSafe. This is useful if you do not want a particular apps files to be monitored.

Installers are now automatically excluded (where possible) The secondary location can now be an external HD or USB memory stick.

When this particular drive is connected KeepSafe will automatically perform copies. You can also tell KS to use local storage as a temp location. So any files you make when you are 'on the road' are saved locally and are copied to the secondary location when it is connected.

It can also append the username to make it easy for multiple accounts to share the same KeepSafe backup drive.

Options to delete local archive or non local archive files as well as the ability to check the database for any missing files (in case of user deletion)

Reporting options for file count by type, file count by location, disk space by type and disk space by location. These show the results in pie chart form as well as a list below showing the actual percentages.

General Software Discussion / Re: HowTo find ALMOST empty audio files?
« Last post by Curt on December 20, 2008, 07:22 PM »
Wow, cmpm, you have gone far to answer my initial question! Thanks!

However, as I was trying to imply in my previous post, there was no need to do anything else than to ask Vista Explorer! Open the Music directory, place the marker in Search, type *.mp3, accept that Vista will say there are far too many answers, click Size, and read, mark & delete the top answers. The hole procedure took about twenty seconds.

 :)

the only thing I can think of myself is that no music files in this directory should be any smaller than a couple of MB. The shortest I can think of was a little piece by Elvis, 43 seconds, which took up 1.4 MB. Are there any program to search a directory & delete files smaller than 2 MB?

And this is just what Grorgy was telling me to do while I was typing ;-)

you could do it with something like Locate, tell it to search for all mp3 (or whatever) and choose the maximum size, it will return a list for you.

General Software Discussion / HowTo find ALMOST empty audio files?
« Last post by Curt on December 20, 2008, 08:44 AM »
For a couple of months I have been using a DRM-remover+converter, to transform ten thousand locked WMA files into free MP3 files. There were no problems when I did this on the old XP, but when I purchased this new Vista, I had to cut down on expenses for a while. One of the tricks, I thought, was to run the giveaway programs, that I had on the old XP, off the backup drive. It seemed to go well, but now I have discovered that several of the audio files are damaged: they are almost empty but not all empty. Because they are not all empty I really have no program that will offer to find them. And I am not going to search for them manually...

So my question is: How to find ALMOST empty audio files in a large collection of folders and subfolders?
Perhaps there even is a program that can do it automatically?

General Software Discussion / Lavasoft Helix Anti-Virus
« Last post by Curt on December 19, 2008, 05:11 PM »
3 years ago Lavasoft tried to get into the firewall game, and later they also launched a anti-spyware+anti-virus combination called Ad-Aware PLUS, which some say wasn't neither! Now they are launching a genuine (I expect) anti-virus program, though: Lavasoft Anti-Virus Helix

1 year: $24, 2 yrs: $32, 3 yrs: $41
3-seat: $34, 5-seat: $42, p.a.

I am not too sure what the idea for this product actually is. Lavasoft are still promoting their Ad-Aware PLUS as an all-in-one solution: >Buy Ad-Aware 2008 Plus and get real-time anti-spyware and anti-virus protection in one seamless product. $27< Is it about getting more customers because the price is 3 dollar less, or is it because Helix is offering better Anti-virus protection than Ad-Aware PLUS does? I don't know, and they don't tell (yet).

Lavasoft Anti-Virus Helix gives you the power to create your own security solution instead of choosing a combination tool or security suite. It offers a seamlessly integrated solution with leading edge technology to combat identity theft and cyber crime – detecting over 1.5 million threats.

Protect your irreplaceable files, photos, and music, and improve PC health without draining your system’s resources. Email, chat, surf, and download with peace of mind. Lavasoft Anti-Virus Helix offers superior detection rates and real-time protection against a range of cyber threats, including viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits, blended malware, and dangerous drive-by downloads.

meanwhile... here is another Searcher I haven't tried, but think I should tell about anyway:
rexCrawler  from http://sites.google....site/rexcrawler/news

rexCrawler is a complex file-searching utility built on the Microsoft .NET v3.5 Framework. It is capable of searching both file names and file contents using plain text or regular expression matching. File names can also be filtered using the familiar Wildcard format (*.doc, etc.). The output of a given search can list both filenames and lines that match the contents filter. These results can be sent to both a file (CSV or text) and a DataGridView on-screen. Copying information from the on-screen display to the Windows Clipboard is also possible.
