I can't remember where it was. But I know there was a forum where I mentioned that problem and the author claimed he was working on improving the threading.  But that was probably 6 months ago or more when I first tried it. Sorry I can't remember anything more specific.

I know I did play around with starting like 4 GB file copies and then doing other tasks. It would start the other jobs, but it tended to lock up or give a Not Responding dialog.  Wasn't completely frozen though. I like the 4 panes. But so far I'm having pretty good luck with QTTabBar and just placing the Explorer windows evenly using launchers.  Now and then it forgets some tabs, usually on system start up.  Once they're working they seem to keep working. (I have all my drives set at a Group with Startup attribute.)

I like the idea of Q-Dir with 4 panes.  But seems every time I try to copy a multi-GB file and try to do something else in the meantime, it gets flaky.

It's supposed to be multi-thread but I just get the feeling it's tested with small files. I haven't tried it in awhile though.  Maybe the threading is improved.

General Software Discussion / Re: Fold 1.9.0.0
« Last post by MilesAhead on June 06, 2011, 04:37 PM »
Fold 1.9.0.0  Now supports listing folders to open on command line.  Also if a non existent file or empty file is specified as the first file on the command line, it is opened for editing using Notepad. (Why not use Notepad directly? For command prompt freaks it may be convenient for using the Up Arrow command history. At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

Any paths with spaces should be wrapped in double quotes.
For example

fold c:\ "C:\Program Files"  should open those folders side by side with a TaskBar Gap as specified in Fold.ini.

=======================================================
Note that for folders listed on command line, they must all exist or the launch is aborted.
With a folder set file on the other hand, each folder name is checked and those not found are removed from the list.  If any valid folders remain, they are launched.
=======================================================

Note that I've changed the behavior above.  The command line params are scanned for folders.  If any valid are found, they are added to an array and launched.  No further processing is done.  Other than that, if a file that is a list of folders is specified, it is processed.  If the filename on the command line does not exist or has 0 length, then it is passed to Notepad for edit.

For example if you use this command line:
Fold c: d:\ e:

all the drives are converted to upper case and a slash is appended if needed.  Then those are launched as folders.

If you have this command line
Fold c: c:\temp crap l:

then assuming there's no folder named "crap" the other 3 folders will be opened etc..

An example with notepad:

Fold FolderSet.txt

If FolderSet.txt does not exist or is blank, it's passed to notepad.

FolderCache 5.8.1.0 Added .ini file option PercentMargin to set TaskBar Gap size.  Run the new FolderCache and then quit it if you wish to change the margin from the default 5%. The new .ini file will have comments for valid range and defaults for PercentMargin.

By the way, just unzip FolderCache to an empty folder.  There's no install. If you want to get rid of it, delete the folder. The entire download is less than 1/2 a MB.

Thanks for your interest.  All the commands are detailed in the Readme. Use the Show Readme command in Tray Menu.  If you have a program that can display TreePad type files, such as TreePadLite, that's registered for .hjt file type, press F1 when the Folder Cache window is open.  If it's not registered, use Choose Help Reader command in Tray Menu.

I didn't use the compiled TreePad reader program because a small help file becomes over a MB with the reader compiled in. It's very slow of the HD.  It's better to either use the Readme file, or install TreePadLite or one of the more advanced TreePad apps.  TreePadLite is free and opens very quickly.

I've kind of gotten away from updating the changes page because this program has a Check For Updates command. If a newer version is on the site for download, it will prompt to fetch it.

If you use a ToolBar near the TaskBar such as RocketDock or another you may also want to take a look at MaxaMiser.  Alt Up Arrow "MaxaMises" the active window while leaving a gap next to the TaskBar to avoid covering your toolbar.  The gap is adjustable via .ini file.
Eventually I'll add the adjustable gap to FolderCache.  One step at a time though. :)

Currently FolderCache Side By Side Button is hard wired to leave a gap that's 5% of the screen width or height depending on the location of the TaskBar.  Also is TaskBar is set to AutoHide I believe the API for the screen work area gives the screen resolution as the work area.  To get a gap TaskBar AutoHide must be disabled.

Here's a screen shot of 8 folders opened with FolderCache using Side By Side Button.
Note that the multiple tabs on each folder aren't from FolderCache. That's QTTabBar's doing. :)

Newsbin 6 just went RC1.  Looks like the $15 deal is still in effect.

If you have Registered v. 5.x installed the 6 RC1 installer will act as an upgrade.
If you're not a registered user you're probably better off getting the Trial download.

Here's the MS way to do it from command line:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930527

Skip past the stuff about using Disk Cleanup. At the bottom it has the steps for command line to get permissions then delete folder with all subfolders and contents.

At least that's what they say.
I imagine it should work as long as your flavor of Windows has takeown.exe installed.

MaxaMiser 1.3 Now Restores a truly maximized window. Also if active window position happens to be the same as the "MaxaMised" position, with no previous position or size info, it is centered at about 70% desktop size.

MaxaMiser 1.1 For those who hate to let go of the mouse, I added a "Use Alt Middle Mouse Click" option to the Tray Menu. I recommend clicking on the window frame someplace to avoid side effects. :)

The option is on by default.  Requires aux. ahk program included in the download to be in the same folder.

MaxaMiser 1.0

Since I've been playing around with window sizing and placement leaving a gap for the TaskBar, I thought it time to write something very simple to semi-maximize a window. I use RocketDock and it's too annoying when it gets covered.

MaxaMiser sits in the Tray.  Alt Up Arrow adjusts the active window.  If the window is truly maximized, nothing happens. This is to avoid confusing the state of the window tracked by the OS.  Otherwise, the size and position is saved in an associative array(Scripting.Dictionary to the rescue again.) Then it's sized to the screen dimensions except for a gap by the TaskBar.  Use the .ini file option to set the gap size.

A test is done to see if the window is already MaxaMised with previous position info stored.  If so, it's repositioned and sized using the stored info.

For apps it uses the basename of the app.  Notepad for notepad.exe etc. as the key in the array.  For Explorer windows it prepends "Explorer_" so for C:\ window you'd get "Explorer_C:\" as the key.  For this reason MaxaMising multiple views of the same folder will overwrite position info.  Last one saved wins.

If you find it's not working at all with Explorer windows try setting "show full path in title bar" Explorer view setting to enabled.

See Readme.txt for details.

Cool. I'm still going to install it, I'm going to think harder about using it the most efficiently, and I'll try to consider features as a whole instead of in isolation like I did above.

From what I've tried so far I like it.  I don't have it set to capture new folder opens. I prefer to have 2 or more windows open with tabs. Just seems simpler to drag & drop if you have Explorer windows side by side.  FreeCommander you can drag & drop to a tab sticking up but it opens this copy window that's a pain. I still feel more comfortable dropping on a Tab that's the active one in the opposite pane.

This tab bar thingy could be very nice as Explorer windows tend to snap up faster than FC.exe.  I still like FC's renamer though. I can't abandon it completely.

I'm just trying this out now.  You guys still happy with it?
Once I figured out how to lock my drives as tabs it looks like a cool way to do drag & drop file ops.  I'm starting to do apps that place explorer folders. If each has all my drives that could save me from loading up FreeCommander just for multiple tabs.

I just installed 1.5.0.0 Beta 2.  So far so good. :)

I just have one question.  Since I do use USB docking stations I notice when you shut them off and drives are not listed, when you bring Explorer up the next time you have to(as far as I know) manually set them up as tabs and lock them again. It would be nice if this was handled automatically once locked.  I have the option checked to restore locked tabs. The USB drives in the docks tend to keep the same drive letters so that shouldn't be an issue.

Edit: Got it now.  Just made a group and set it to open on startup. I can turn drives off and on and any present are picked up when the Explorer window opens.  Now I just hope it's stable.  I haven't seen any glitches yet.

Yeah, I've been getting around it by using some file ops but haven't bothered to script that. This'll save me the trouble  :)

Lemme' know how it works, ease of use, free space needed etc..
I don't utilize key drives much.  But that could change. :)
