Found Deals and Discounts / Re: The Humble Indie Bundle #3
« Last post by Deozaan on August 03, 2011, 09:05 PM »
I bought the HIB #3 the first day it was announced and I'm still waiting for HIB #1 to be added to the list.

The folks running the Humble Indie Bundle are so awesome I seriously believe it will happen. :-*

That's not a love story. The cat is trying to figure out how to fit the dolphin in his mouth.

I finally played it and completed the first four levels and a couple challenge modes. It is a really fun game!

So why not make the software developer(s) a non-government programming studio. That way it won't be the government that is interfering with the markets.

As society already has paid the salaries, work environments etc. for the ones who created the software it appears to me that making the software open source is the only correct path to follow.

That seems to me to be a great logical conclusion.

General Software Discussion / Re: Google+

A while ago i wrote:
I think the dirty little secret of google+ and twitter, etc. is that a huge number (the majority?) of accounts are actually created by bots for a variety of reasons.  Of course no site wants to admit this because they love the headlines that make it look like huge numbers of people are joining.  Maybe google is just deleting some of them.

Here's a peak at the shady underbelly:
http://gawker.com/58...r-followers-are-fake
It discusses how a politician has paid for over 800,000 fake twitter accounts to make it look like he is popular.

From the article you linked:

While it would be impossible to survey all of Gingrich's followers, a cursory glance immediately turned up a few accounts that featured odd names, no personal information, no followers, no posts, and a small follow list.

Yeah, and a cursory glance of my followers will immediately turn up the same thing, and I have less than 40 followers. Imagine how many of these strange bots/accounts I would have if I had over a million followers. You don't have to pay for bots to follow you on twitter. For reasons I can't comprehend, they do it by themselves.

I'm also not sure if this affects my followers, but I've also attempted to prune my follower list by blocking/reporting for spam the accounts I think are spammers/bots.

You've got a public figure who the media love to make look bad, you've got an anonymous source with information that makes him look bad, and you've got Gawker not investigating whether or not it is true but essentially reporting it as fact. I'm not saying it's not true. I'm just saying that the article is basically "he said/he said, we glanced at but didn't really investigate" with very little journalistic integrity.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was true, but in my opinion that article does not remove all reasonable doubt. (In other words, I also wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't true.)

I hate it when carriers create their own custom UI and change it from the standard Android interface.

I really like the Stock Android experience. If the carriers would just compete on hardware and leave the software to Google and app developers, I think that the experience would probably be a lot better.

I've been avoiding reading this thread until I had a PC capable of playing this game, but I noticed so many posts here that I figured it would show up on my unread feed again if I took a peek at it now.

The graphical style of that screenshot looks like/reminds me of PixelJunk Monstersw for the PlayStation 3, which is a TD game I always intended to buy since I really liked the demo but for some reason never have.

Anyway that's about all I can add to the discussion right now since I haven't had a chance to play it yet.

E.Y.E.: Divine Cybermancy just popped up on Steam, and seems like it has potential.

Rock Paper Shotgun Preview

There is a 4-pack available for $53.97 or about $14 each.  3 people want to go in on it?  If I haven't heard by Monday, I'll assume no.

Um, oops. I had typed my response inside the quote.

I've got 3 people who want in on this. Want to just send me the money via PayPal or DCredits and I'll dish out the extra copies? I'll send you a PM with more details.

I must have missed this punishment, as I do not recall it ever being a problem, and I have used Unlocker for ages.
[snip]
But it all seems to have been cleaned up for my last version: Unlocker1.9.1-x64.exe

I'm not sure where in the world you are, but according to scancode, it only "punishes" you if you live in USA or GBR.

Update: after a little REing, I found it uses GetLocaleInfoA to detect if you're in GBR or USA and if so installs the bing bar, doing a 30 sec countdown with the delay.dll NSIS plugin, if not, just offers QuickStores with no delay whatsoever.

Grr.

Or you may be right, and the software author may have removed the punishment in the latest version.

How many years since the original iPad was launched? And still there is no tablet available comparable in form factor, weight, performance and price running Android :(

Huh? The first 3 Android tablets in that article are comparable to iPad 1/2. . .

Brazilian currency at highest level since 1999

Though I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. . .

That summary of the Brazilian currency story doesn't seem accurate to me. They didn't trick the people into thinking their currency was suddenly magically stable. They phased out an unstable currency and replaced it with a new, stable one.

Sounds to me like they allowed the value of their URV to inflate at the same rate as inflation. Which sounds a lot like how the "gold standard" works to me.

this quote from the article I linked seems extraordinary to me-

The day of arrival was never a disappointment. The drama of it all – breaking open the wholly unnecessary white box, wasting half a day on the installation, playing with animated onscreen bits that pop up or slide about, copying files from drive to drive simply to watch the new progress bars – was worth the trouble of half my old software not working properly any more.

:o

Wait.....you're saying that the Intel integrated GPU is an upgrade from your current GPU?

Yes, I think so. As I understand it, the CPU-integrated-GPU on these new 2nd Gen Core i5/7s are equivalent to Radeon HD 3000 series. Or am I misunderstanding that?

Apologies, I mistook the integrated GPU for the previous GMA3000 Intel graphics.....having just had a look at it's specs it seems quite impressive compared to Intels' previous attempts.

But I'd still go for a Radeon 6850  :)

I just found this Anandtech article which compares the CPU-integrated-GPU known as Intel HD 3000 and Intel HD 2000 to some relatively cheap discrete GPUs. The Core i7 2600K with Intel HD 3000 does pretty well in the benchmarks, but most of the benchmarks are done at lowest quality settings and at "only" 1024x768 resolution. However it seems as though increasing the resolution reduces the difference in performance between the integrated graphics and the discrete graphics.

But of course a Radeon HD 6850 will blow the Intel HD 3000 out of the water. I'll definitely be getting a better discrete GPU, but I think the integrated one will suit me just fine for at least a few months.

The link mentions the fact that the install APP self-deletes after install with no prior mention AFAIK that this is what would happen.  I should add that to my disappointments too.

 :o

Imagine if Microsoft made the installation DVD self-destruct after installing Windows... Seriously Apple, what the smurf is that all about?
