Converting to .jpg would be fine...more things require something other than .bmp any way, so it would serve a dual purpose by resizing and converting all in one shot.

Ok...this explains it.

I always wondered why life here in NY/NJ was the way it is...it's the Italians...we have so many!

(btw...I am part Italian  :D)

General Software Discussion / Re: gPhotoShow Pro - A Nice Screensaver Maker
« Last post by app103 on November 07, 2006, 01:16 AM »
The search for a good screensaver maker wasn't fun...not at all (mouser: my pc hates you  :P).

There is a lot of garbage out there that makes some really unstable screensavers.

I started with downloading the sample screensavers made with each one and trying them out to rate their quality and features...and user options. The finished product is the most important part of this.

There were so many that I had to end task on the sample screensavers...some where the screensavers ran my cpu through the roof....many just minimized themselves and wouldn't close when deactivated.

gPhotoShow makes some very stable screensavers and offers the user of the screensavers a lot of options. With this one you get the most bang for your buck.

General Software Discussion / Re: Best free firewall for Windows?
« Last post by app103 on November 07, 2006, 12:56 AM »
Sometimes the firewall you choose depends on the software you plan on running.

If you plan on using IRC, forget Norton, it will block you from IRC for no good reason whenever it pleases.

I loved Zone Alarm, but had to ditch it after it kept kicking everyone out of the chatroom I host on my pc. (took awhile to figure out that was the problem)

Some firewalls just don't get along with some things you may want to do. So make 2 choices and use the second one if you find software not getting along with your first choice.

Mobysaurus / Re: .Net Framework: v2.0 install
« Last post by app103 on November 07, 2006, 12:49 AM »
Mouser is right...which is why I installed it on my old pc even though I don't have anything running on it yet that needs it. I figured get it done & over with and out of the way so I won't have to do it later.

On that slow pc it took quite awhile to install it. I would hate to have to have done it later after installing a program that needed it.

You might want to take into consideration the limits of popular image upload sites like Imageshack...their upload limit is 1.5mb.

Speaking of Imageshack, a nice feature to add might be the option to send an image to Imageshack after resizing. That could be useful for a lot of people. (but it will increase the bandwidth you use)

There is an issue with a few cameras' images not being compatible with your resizer...they generate .bmp files (still under your file size limit though). Might want to consider supporting that.

General Software Discussion / Re: IE7 Rant

The reason why IE opens so fast is because explorer.exe is always running in the background. It's also the reason why all IE based browsers open fast.

If opera or firefox were always running in the background in a similar manner, they could be just as fast at opening.

Now if you want to see really fast, that would be my dIE browser...lacks just about every feature a browser should have...minimalism to the max...lol (but it was a lot faster than using IE on my 233mhz machine)

dIE.jpg

Thrown together out of necessity & frustration...with a sense of humor. I consider it a total piece of trash. I would have tossed it and its source in the recycle bin and never even have put it on my site, except there are actually people that love it to pieces and would be upset if I didn't make it available. Go figure.

Actually there are features in Corectif Explorer that don't work in 9x...were added specifically for Win2k+.

But PS Tray Factory does look really nice...might ditch Corectif Explorer and TrayTools 2000 and get that.

Tabbed IE "addons" like Avant and Maxthon aren't slow with tabs, btw.

AOL Explorer is fast with the tabs too.

Do a search and read all the reviews and don't just bash it because it's AOL, it's actually a quite lovely browser.

I linked to the Softpedia page because there is quite a few comments there about it....and some that might explain why browsers like Firefox are slower to open.

There is a freeware program called Corectif Explorer that does that but only for icons of programs that are launched from the Startup folder in the Start menu.

What it does is when you activate it, is it checks the running processes for any program that is listed in your startup folder, and if they are still running, kills them and relaunches them, which puts the icons back in the tray....all in one shot.

There seems to be a color difference between the original and your compressed versions.

I tried it myself and came up with this at 10% compression:

topbanner_website-10%.jpg
34kb

topbanner_forum10%.jpg
14kb

Can't really go higher than 10% or there is a noticeable difference in quality. (noticeable to me at least)

Oh - another thing... Selections just completely suck if you resize the text. Beyond inaccurate, they're just silly. To reproduce it, press CTRL and scroll your mouse wheel then make a selection. It's just total non-sense.

I tried this with AOLex/IE 6. Didn't get to the part where you try to select text yet, when I noticed something weird:

browserweird.png

Second image is one click of the scroll wheel smaller.

It is reproduceable...on your post...even in just plain IE 6. (I had to see if it was an AOLex issue) I have never noticed something like this happening before.

Developer's Corner / What programming language is paying your rent this month?
« Last post by app103 on November 04, 2006, 02:34 AM »
Interesting survey over on The Code Project.

If you want to participate, scroll down to the bottom of the page and pick your choices. Note that you can select more than one language.

Results are here: http://www.codeproje...etail.asp?survey=613

I found it very interesting that C# 2.0 and Delphi were the top 2 in the results.

I didn't think Delphi was as popular as that. I mean I have always loved Delphi, but my experiences in the programming communities that I am a part of, were that most people in the groups were coding in C/C++....with C# coming in second.

With me being the Delphi programmer of the bunch, usually made me feel like the 'white elephant' because nobody else was using it...or even worse, hated it and classed me as some lower lifeform for not only using it, but liking it.

I am glad to see that it's much more popular than I thought. I was beginning to feel like I made a mistake with choosing it as my first language to learn in depth.

I am posting this just a little late. (too late for it to push it to the front page)

I submitted the link to digg:

They were wonderful!

only 12,003? hardly seems worth the trouble to visit if that's all they've got

It's up to 12,043...is that enough yet?  ;D

(of course not)

Even though I am a Paintshop Pro user, I like looking at this stuff because often it sparks some creativity and gives me a lot of ideas to springboard from. Plus a lot of the techniques can be adapted.

And never think the autosave feature in your software will save you...it fails when you need it most.

Just an update on my experiences with this program:

After making this post, I emailed the developer to let him know about it.

He showed his appreciation with a free copy. I was quite surprised. I never had anything like that happen to me before.   ;D

He fixed some sort of bug in it recently, and not only did he send every user an email to inform them of this, he sent me a second one, personally, to make sure I knew about the update.

I have created a project I titled "Clean the House" with all that nasty stuff nobody wants to do, but needs to get done.

It's really nice to be able to see my progress in this...I can now accurately say I am 10% finished with the worst of the cleaning in the worst room of the house.  :)

This is so much better than lists.

...a photograph of an office piled high with stacks of paper. The occupant of the office -- a researcher in Xerox's European research facility -- was considered neither ineffective nor inefficient. Quite the contrary: he was, they tell us, legendary in being able to find any document in his office very quickly. But the managers of the laboratory were uncomfortable with his office because of what it said about their laboratory. They were, after all, an organization looking to develop digital workplace solutions.
... Whenever senior colleagues came by the office, then, the man with the messy desk was instructed to put his papers in boxes and hide them under the stairs.  ;D

I know exactly how that guy feels...I have to hide it all once a month when the landlord comes for the rent...then put it all back once he leaves.   ;D

It would be nice if the new owner would let me mail him the rent, like the old one did. But no...this guy wants to come visit everybody in the building once a month & 'socialize'.

With about 950 unread non-spam emails and about 7 pages of unread posts here, and a ton of stuff that needs to be done b4 this weekend, I am going nuts.

And I can't shine my sink because now it's clogged!  ;D
I have been trying to unclog both sinks for about 3 days...they are connected...bathroom & kitchen. When one gets clogged they both do.

Anybody got a number for a good murphy's lawyer?

Yes, I can still laugh at myself, so it can't be all that bad...there is still some of the old me left here somewhere.

It's not a matter of so many tasks in mind and trying to switch between them...it's more like avoiding it all because it's not any fun any more....it's all starting to bore me.

what does 'coffee' mean - in the context of using smilies?

i'm taking a break?

please explain.

I don't know...but another forum named this smiley after me:  v44-me.gif

Everywhere you type :april on their forum, that graphic will appear.

I guess it could be used during conversation in chat environments like MSN Messneger as a substitute for the word 'coffee'.
