Hmmm, mouser just said he thinks it's something he found at shellcity.  So I was browsing the site, and I came across this:
SideSLide

Mouser's post for it here.

This could be it, I'll let you know in a minute.  The only question left...will mouser allow me to give him $5 without ripping my head off for it.
5027
Well, the name "Take Control" doesn't ring a bell.  It took a while to find the right links, but I saw the screenshot and it's not what I was looking for.  UGh!!!  I almost thought you had it there, Darwin!
5028
It's not called a virtual desktop manager, that's why I'm having a hard time finding it.  It's not DM2.  It's not in those threads you mentioned, I read those many times since yesterday.  I think mouser mentioned it in a little software discovery thread, like, "this is cool, check it out."
I don't really remember what it did.  I know, that's not helpful.  It was like a desktop manager, but it had all this power that I didn't understand at the time.  From what I remember, it had this main window that could be autohid on the edge of the screen, and inside this window you could arrange your icons like you would on your desktop, but it could do more than that.  Maybe it would launch those applications, or maybe the way you placed the icons mattered.  I don't remember.
It was supposed to be very powerful, but I was impatiently fiddling around with it and I couldn't figure out what was the purpose of the program.

Nobody yet?  Ugh...I'm never going to find this.  $5 donation credits to whoever finds it.  Dead or alive.

Bravo! I'm a big fan of Super. Despite it's oddball interface and general clunky look, it handles just about everything I've ever thrown at it.

Hats off to your Dad too!
Thanks!  My dad's a good guy.

Yeah, I almost dismissed Super because of the interface, until I realized how it does everything you'd want something like that to do.
5031
Man, I've been looking for this for the past hour.  WTF!!!
5032
Don't know how large your file is, but you might try to convert it to something other than wmv and try to edit that.

You could always convert back to wmv once you get your clip if you need it in that format.

Luck!
Ha!  That's exactly what I did using the great converter, Super.  The video is now posted:
http://aram.dcmember...ognition-for-my-dad/

I wanted to put it up for my dad, he's the worldwide expert on that particular subject.

No, not powerpro.  Something more like a virtual desktop application, except there was stuff that you configure to go autohide on the sides of the screen.  I don't know, it's at the tip of my tongue.
5034
What was the name of that one software that was mentioned on DC somewhere, that was like a virtual desktop manager, but had things that you can autohide on the edges of the screen and stuff?  I don't remember much about it, I think mouser mentioned it.  It was freeware, and kind of a poweruser thing, where it had a lot of settings and stuff.  I just remember the autohide around the screen thing.
5035
I have downloaded a large wmv file that I am trying to cut a segment out of.  Every program I've tried using that has worked for me in the past (Boilsoft, asfbin) gives me the same error "instruction referenced memory memory could not be read" (something like that) and the program crashes.  Why does this happen?  Is there anything else I can do?  I need to cut the so it will be a reasonable size to post on my website.  Thanks.

I still remember how impressed I was with the speed of Server 2003 when I started this thread years ago.  If driver/software compatibility was not an issue, I would be really, really interested in doing this still.
5037
ctrl+shift+alt+l was my secret unchangeable emergency hotkey for bringing up the preferences if you otherwise lose the system tray icon and launchbars.  i thought for sure no one would be insane enough to define that key for something else.  obviously i was not considering the fact that superboyac was a user..  i'll add in a winkey.

try re-downloading now.
HAHAHA!!  I'm very proud of myself!  You just made my week.

A bug I'm encountering with this new version:
--I use "Ctrl+Shift+Alt+L" to Lock my workstation.  But now when I use that combo, the preferences for LBC pops up and my workstation doesn't lock.  I can't find the setting where this is controlled.

So, er, reading between the lines, I'm sensing that overall performance is an issue for you, Superboyac?

Please try to be more clear in the future - these vague, touchy-feely posts are really hard to decipher   :P

Seriously, Vista on a dual-core system with 3GB RAM is PLENTY quick!
Haha, yeah, speed is pretty much my main concern.  Your Vista may be fast now, but will it be fast in 5 years?  My point is, the system shouldn't slow down just because some time has passed.  That's what happens to Windows.  I say this as a person who doesn't do really that much that requires a lot of processing power.  Like, my virus protection now shouldn't be that much slower in 5 years on the same computer.  It's just virus protection.  Outlook 2010 shouldn't be that much slower than 2007 on the same computer.  It's just a freakin email program.  It's stuff like that that bothers me.  What is happening over time that makes the computer slow down like that?  I can understand why gamers need new systems every few years, or graphic designers, or other people who deal with programs that really need the latest and greatest installed.  But I see no reason why office users should feel severe performance hits just because it's been 5 years.  Hell, even 10 years from now, things should be relatively quick in my view.  Programs shouldn't add unnecessary bulk and OS's shouldn't slow down for no reason.

OK, I think I'm off topic...again.

The hotkey hiding issue is solved for me.  I don't know why more people don't use this, it's a brilliant little piece of software, just like find and run robot.  I'm not a keyboard fanatic like programmers and other people who type a lot, but I am obsessed with productivity, and I'm in love with apps that pop things up under my mouse like this program and clipboard managers.  FARR is awesome too because you can find anything in the mess.

The way I would look at these programs for you as a programmer is that you can combine these features into a larger-scope program.  You can implement the find as you type search bar in FARR in many types of programs.  The popup menu can also be used in a variety of applications where you need to access certain tools efficiently.  And so forth.

Is it me, or do most of the changes and improvements in Windows 7 seem sort of irrelevant in the big picture?  I don't know about you guys, but I really could care less about how the windows and transparencies look, I don't care what media players are updated because I'm just going to use something else that's better, I don't care about improved start button or anything like that.

What I do care about is:
--Is it fast?  Seriously?  If I have a quad-core system and all I do is email, office applications, web browsing (i.e. not gaming or anything that is remotely intensive to the system), does the system as a whole feel speedy and fast?  I mean, honestly, I use windows now and it doesn't seem all that much faster than what I was doing 5 years ago.  And will it slow down for no reason after using it for a couple of years.  Just because you've installed a lot of software doesn't mean a system should slow down.

--Is it going to be easy to use and tweak, and not be overly paranoid about security and such?

--Speed, speed, speed!!!  I can't emphasize this enough.  I want fast to boot, fast to shut down, fast to open multiple applications.  TO me, it just feels like that the increase in processing power over the years hasn't translated to an increase in speed.

Oh yeah, good point...AOL.  AOL sucked.

Great, loving it!

Comments:
--For autohide/slide stuff, I don't know about other people, but I hate the delays associated with them (on any program).  I prefer to set any kind of delay on the slide-out, slide-in to 0.  Meaning, as soon as the mouse goes there it appears, and as soon as the mouse leaves, it disappears.  No delay.  But that's just me.  It's probably best to make it one of those millisecond options.  Autocad does this and despite me mailing them for 3 years, they've never provided the option for it.  To make it worse, with each new version, they move more and more dialogs to a slide-out thing.  So I have to deal with a million slideouts all the time, and I always have to wait a few milliseconds while everything disappears...it's a little annoying.  I know, I know, who cares about a few milliseconds, right?  But eveything in Autocad is done so fast, it makes a difference.  And I'm just crazy like that.

--Also, it doesn't look like you fixed the thing where if you trigger the menu to appear and don't want to select anything, it doesn't disappear.  At least have the ESC key get out of it, but ideally you want to click elsewhere and the menu goes away.

General Software Discussion / Re: Someone MUST make a new PowerMarks program.
« Last post by superboyac on October 23, 2008, 06:09 PM »
I believe most of the features mentioned by Superboyac and others are added to <Power Favorites> now. Please just list your requests if you need some new features to rock with your bookmarks :).
Wow, excellent work there.  You really implemented those new features!  This is turning out to be great.

I am running into a little error right now, I'll explain later...

I really like the addition of the bookmark add, silent add in the tray.  Is there any way to have those 3 buttons in firefox so we can stick it in the toolbar somewhere?
Also, can we have an option where once we call up Power Favorites and select a bookmark, it will minimize the program automatically back to the tray so the window doesn't hang around in the back?
The error I'm getting is this:  When I select a bookmark from Power Favorites, it doesn't work and gives me a message dialog box "Cannot open clipboard" with just an OK button.  I use a clipboard manager (ARSclip) that may be causing this because if I close it, PF works fine.  Can this be solved on your end?

For everyone interested in a Powermarks replacement, Power Favorites is really close.  That's my official word.

I used to have a floating dock (just one) of everything.  I never liked the permanent dock because it locked out screen space.  The problem with the floating one is that it disappeared behind other windows, and I didn't want it topmost all the time because it's annoying.  So I assigned a hotkey to the whole dock, and I minimized the dock to the tray.  Now, I don't have anything anywhere, I just pop the menu up under my mouse whenever I need it with the hotkey.  It's beautiful.  It's the same way I use ARSClip (or CH&S).

I am so in love with this hotkey menu popup.  It has tripled my use of launchbar commander in the last 2 days.

OK, thanks everyone!  I finally got it working.

I just have to say...that was a PAIN IN THE ASS.  My goodness, could that be any less intuitive?  And complicated, too.  Wow, I am just blown away by how ridiculous that whole process was.

You can, I do it all the time.  But if I remember right the setup is a bit quirky.  Look for an MVP article by Shauna Kelly or Susan Barnhill.

If I find it first I'll post it.
Thanks, I'm looking for it, but I can't find exactly what I'm looking for.  Why is this so hard?

check that...I'm reading your edited link

The formatting of list styles applies to the list paragraph numbering and indentation only. The body of the paragraph retains the formatting of the paragraph style applied previously.
If what you say is true, then why in the world would Word include the options to format the text with all the options shown in the screenshot?  That's what puzzles me.  I'm not understanding this at all.

So are you saying there's no way to format the list with indentations, numbering, and formatting all in one click of a style?
