« Last post by Deozaan on August 11, 2011, 07:57 PM »
I just downloaded and installed SP3 manually and Windows Update still redirects me to that KB article. :(

I guess it's time to reinstall Windows and see if that helps.

The recent spending cuts have not significantly changed that in fact. They are minor in relation to the total deficit and spending.

- Oshyan

From Dave Ramsey: "If the US government was a family, they would be making $58,000 a year and they would spend $75,000 a year and are $327,000 in credit card debt. They are currently proposing BIG spending cuts to reduce their spending to $72,000 a year. These are the actual proportions of the federal budget and debt reduced to a level we can understand."

And another (from Facebook, not Dave Ramsey):
Some perspective on the US Debt. Too many zeros to understand? Let's remove 8 zeros and pretend it is the budget for a family:
Total annual family income: $21,700
Amt of money family spent: $38,200
Amt of new credit card debts: $16,500
Outstanding debt on credit card: $142,710
Amount cut from the annual budget: $385 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And we are surprised S&P cut them?
Jeesh. Any bank would have bankrupted the family already.

Try reinstalling SP3.

Does that mean reinstall Windows (with SP3) or just download the SP3 installer and run that? The version of Windows I have is Windows XP Pro with SP3. It installs Windows with SP3 included. So I never really installed SP3 because Windows came with SP3.

If that doesn't work, try reinstalling the version of Windows you have, and then immediately go to the Windows Update site and do ALL your updating (including SP3) from there.

Apparently Windows Update doesn't work without SP3 anymore, so if I did have a version of Windows without SP3 then I couldn't even do what you suggested anyway. :-\ I'm confused.

Living Room / Solved: Fresh install of Windows XP SP3 can't use Windows Update?
« Last post by Deozaan on August 11, 2011, 06:47 PM »
Hi folks,

I just recently installed Windows XP Pro SP3 on both my netbook and an old desktop PC. The netbook installation worked without problems, but the desktop PC installation won't allow me to use Windows Update. I just get redirected to the following page:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2497281

It tells me I can't use Windows Update unless I've got Service Pack 3. But I just installed SP3 and my PC tells me I've got SP3. I followed the steps there it tells me to do if I have SP3 and I'm getting that message and it doesn't help. I still can't use Windows Update.

Any suggestions?

Sort of off topic, is there a good Android equivalent to an iPod Touch yet? (I'm not ready to give up my $15 a month NET10 plan yet)

AFAIK that's basically what an Android Tablet is, since an iPod Touch is essentially an iPhone without the phone.

So just go for a small Android Tablet/Non-phone and you've got an Android Touch.

for those who prefer their games on Steam, SPAZ will be available in less than a week.

http://store.steampo...ered.com/app/107200/

They told me that if you buy it from them or on Impulse you can use the same key to redeem it on Steam. So I already "pre-ordered" it for 25% off on Impulse and I get instant access to play the beta.

What's wrong with Randi starting her own business(es)? Just because she is leaving Facebook to start her own stuff doesn't mean that whatever she starts will compete with Facebook.

Just in case I wasn't clear, I meant wouldn't it be relatively easy and painless to just add your wife as a Guest for the events you want her to see?

Sad thing is if you're a gamer, you're likely going to end up with the requirement to be online to game (or at least *have* an Internet connection for activation) whether you're on Steam or not. See recent Ubisoft games for example...

There was enough of an outcry against this practice that they backed away from it.  That's the key thing- if it hurts the bottom line, they won't do it.  That's the only thing that they learn from.  And a large enough bloc has to have the willingness to do so.

They removed it, but they're bringing it back again for new games. Ubisoft says always-on DRM is 'a success,' fans are confused.

Ubisoft said it has seen "a clear reduction in piracy of our titles which required a persistent online connection, and from that point of view the requirement is a success," speaking with PC Gamer.

Am I the only one who, upon reaching the end of an article, frequently thinks to himself, "What was the point of that article?"

Maybe my reading comprehension isn't so great, but it seems to me that a lot of articles lately don't seem to take a position and state their reasons for taking that position. They just seem to blather on somewhat randomly about a topic and then end. No conclusion. No summary. No point.

This is pretty basic high school Speech/English class type stuff that gets reiterated again in college. I would think someone whose career is in writing would know this stuff. Then again, I'm basing my expectations off of my own personal experience of the public education system in the USA. Maybe these things aren't covered in the UK where that article originated from.

Wouldn't it be fun if this article was posted 'just when we needed it'  ;D

Not really. I don't ever want there to be a zombie apocalypse.

When looking at it, Shagbook has a point. The term "facebook" was around well before Facebook.

I'd never heard of a facebook before Facebook.

In fact, I still have never heard anyone use the term "facebook" unless they were referring to Facebook. :-\

So is it just me, or do other people have as big a hangup about gaming over the web (and generally consider the whole thing a mistake) as I do?

I enjoy gaming over the web because I don't have visitors very often and I don't have multiple computers to play the games I want to play.

I do not (usually) enjoy gaming over the web with strangers, especially competitively. I prefer cooperation or at least I prefer to know some/most of the people I'm playing with, even if I don't know them "IRL" but just as online friends/acquaintances.

Developer's Corner / Re: Want to be in Amazon's App Store? Think again!
« Last post by Deozaan on August 06, 2011, 11:51 AM »
I should also say that I'm not at all surprised by this news. I read a warning put out by some indie game development site a few months ago strongly urging people not to put their games on the Amazon App Store because of Amazon's policies. I'll try to find it and then post the link in this thread.

I found the article from the International Game Developers Association I had referenced:

Two weeks ago, Amazon launched its own Android Appstore. We know that many developers have been eagerly looking forward to that launch in hopes that it would represent a great new revenue opportunity and a fresh take on downloadable game merchandising. The IGDA applauds Amazon’s efforts to build a more dynamic app marketplace. However, the IGDA has significant concerns about Amazon’s current Appstore distribution terms and the negative impact they may have on the game development community, and we urge developers to educate themselves on the pros and cons of submitting content to Amazon.

Read the rest of it here. They go on to explain in detail the problems they have with Amazon's terms.

And an update after Amazon attempted to clarify its terms:

In summary, Amazon’s terms still enable it to steeply discount a game developer’s content without permission — a tactic Amazon could easily use to force game developers to absorb the cost for Amazon to compete with other appstores.

We are not impressed with Amazon’s recent gesture, nor is this matter the result of a misunderstanding. We believe that Amazon’s terms, as they currently stand, represent a threat to game developers.

Read that update here.

They are both good reads and warnings from back in April about the potential (and apparently inevitable) pitfalls of Amazon's Android App Store.

Well, I haven't read the original article yet, but I just felt I should chime in and say that, like piracy, a free copy doesn't necessarily equate to a lost sale.

I've been checking the Amazon Android App Store Free App of the Day frequently and have "purchased" (read: gotten for free) many of the giveaways but most of them don't even interest me and I haven't even downloaded them to my Android device and I certainly wouldn't buy them. I just keep getting them because I'm a sucker for free stuff, even if I don't want or need it.

I should also say that I'm not at all surprised by this news. I read a warning put out by some indie game development site the IGDA a few months ago strongly urging people not to put their games on the Amazon App Store because of Amazon's policies. Yeah... DC automagically puts the decorations on links to wikipedia (also explains the 'w' at the end), but I don't think most people know that...
So DC automagically breaks all Wikipedia links? Shouldn't that be fixed?

Or am I misunderstanding something?

The proper way to link to a wikipedia page is to put only the article name between the tags. e.g. for the Smurfs wiki page ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smurfs ), simply do <wiki>Smurfs</wiki> (but of course you need to use the square brackets) which gives you this: Smurfsw.

Perhaps there are reasons it wouldn't work as well for files, but offhand I can't think of any.

Lots of files on your PC have the exact same name. They can't go in the same location without overwriting each other.
