Living Room / How Microsoft Chooses New Sounds
« Last post by app103 on November 11, 2006, 03:50 AM »
Some musicians spend 18 months working on a whole album. At Microsoft Corp., that's how long it took to perfect just four seconds of sound.

Of course, this isn't just any four-second clip. It's the sound — a soft da-dum, da-dumm, with a lush fade-out — that millions of computer users will hear every day, and perhaps thousands of times in total, when they turn on computers running Microsoft's forthcoming Windows Vista operating system.

Sorry to jump in, but have you seen/tried Numpad Mouse version 0.6c?

Bozzetto is great!  :D

BTW- App103...
Please tell me capisci is correct, I lose sleep over these kind of things...

It's written correctly. As for the pronunciation...
Spoiler
I would probably try to write it for an non-italian as: cupeeshee. That for proper Italian. The sound of the Wiktionary writing remind me more that of some southern dialects.

Bye!

Yeah...Sicilian.  ;)

A lot of the 3rd+ generation Italians around here would even pronounce it 'Gobbeesh'. (like my husband...I live in NJ)

The funniest was Jesus Anthony's definition of "Guido" at the Urban Dictionary. (Written by one of valid Italian descent...)

Does anybody remember Andrew Dice Clay's character 'Guido from Bloomfield' that he used to do in his stand up act?

I couldn't help but think of that when I read that whole page.  ;D

btw...I married a Guido-wannabe.  :-[

Living Room / Re: does having many program windows open slow the sysem?
« Last post by app103 on November 09, 2006, 11:08 AM »
For most users, this is a question they might ask and then have to actually check to find the answer....and all the performance issues of minimizing to tray or taskbar might not be so obvious on a fairly decent pc.

I ran a ton of stuff on a very slow system with very little ram.

One of the ways I survived was by minimizing everything I could to the tray or taskbar when I wasn't actively using it....especially Winamp which had to run at all times if I wanted to maintain an internet connection. (don't ask...freaky hardware prob) I avoided using the Winamp GUI as much as possible...load the playlist, minimize, use hotkeys or tray menu.

There was an increase in speed and responsiveness of the active window by doing this...but my system was so slow normally, that I did notice a tradeoff. It was a bit slower bringing a window into focus, from being minimized to being restored, than it was if the window was in the background and just being brought to the foreground, as the active window.

I don't know if this would be an issue on your machine. I am sure you have a faster CPU and more RAM than I had and are using software in which your pc meets at least the minimum specifications to run it. I treated my P1 with 64mb ram as if it was a P3 with 256mb ram, running all kinds of stuff I shouldn't have been able to, so you might not notice the same things I observed.

As-U-Type 3.2 doesn´t do intelligent completion AFAIK...

You can set up specific codes to be replaced with the text you want. Just have to turn on Speed-Typing.

Living Room / Re: WhatPulse...
« Last post by app103 on November 08, 2006, 10:20 PM »
I started the WhatPulse team for DC.

I removed the banner from my signature because there was some sort of problem with the hosting of it. The banner site disappeared. But now it's back, so the stat banner will be back in my signature again.

If you would like to join the team it's pretty simple.

Just make an account on their site first, install the client and get it running, then go here and join our team:  http://whatpulse.org/stats/teams/10466/

To get a forum banner, go here:  http://pulse.offbeat-zero.net

If you need any help designing your banner, send me a PM and I will help you personally.

Visit the main site and explore from there too:

I was sent a copy of some of the pics, in an email, with the link I first gave. I wish the person that sent it to me had linked to the main page on the site instead.

I was in a rush and didn't look before. I am really sorry that I didn't. I almost missed some of this guy's best work.  :(

@app103 (even though I know you won't return here to read it :P):  Your zen-like agenga says it all. 8)  Makes me wonder why I spent so much time spinning my wheels.  We can probably all tear up our well-intentioned lists and go straight to yours.  When we finish this project, I suggest we distill it all down to app103's agenda list.

I came back here because you begged me to.   ;D

I have to respond to this...

This whole GOE project came at a bad time in my life...I have a lot on my mind. I can't focus on the things I want to focus on and get anything done.

GOE isn't helping me any and it's just making me feel bad about myself for not making any progress, which I don't need right now.

I am going to concentrate on fixing some other things for now...then maybe think about time management when I can better handle it.

If the whole GOE project has helped you, stick with it...keep going. Don't throw away good habits. Just don't lose sight of what is important either.

I think our goal in life should be the pursuit of happiness...not the pursuit of getting more done.

So now I will go pursue happiness...and get things done later when I can smile while doing it and it can mean something.

ContextMenu Commander / Re: ContextMenu Commander

Windows doesn't offer this for every file, by default, but should:

Open in Notepad

Yes, I know there are tools to add this and others to the menu, and I have done it myself, but it would be nice to include in an all-in-one tool.

Now that I'm here you'll doubtless also want to implement the universal 'delete asinine comment' button.

mouser can't sell those to Google, so he will probably charge you on a per comment basis.  :P

Finished Programs / Re: DONE: Static IP address changer
« Last post by app103 on November 07, 2006, 09:38 AM »
how can i download it   :(

Just copy this to a text file and name it dhcp.bat:

netsh -f dhcp.txt

then copy this to a text file and name it dhcp.txt:

# ----------------------------------
# Interface IP Configuration
# ----------------------------------
pushd interface ip
# Interface IP Configuration for "Local Area Connection"
set address name="Local Area Connection" source=dhcp
set wins name="Local Area Connection" source=dhcp
popd
# End of interface IP configuration

Then for any fixed IP config  eg 192.168.0.10) you can use a fixIP.txt like the following:

# ----------------------------------
# Interface IP Configuration
# ----------------------------------
pushd interface ip
# Interface IP Configuration for "Local Area Connection"

set address name="Local Area Connection" source=static addr=192.168.10 mask=255.255.255.0
set address name="Local Area Connection" gateway=192.168.1  gwmetric=0
set dns name="Local Area Connection" source=static addr=212.245.255.2
add dns name="Local Area Connection" addr=??.??.??.?? index=2
add dns name="Local Area Connection" addr=??.??.??.?? index=3
set wins name="Local Area Connection" source=static addr=none

popd
# End of interface IP configuration

then put them all in the same folder...or on your desktop.

replace the ??.??.??.?? with the appropriate IP's

General Software Discussion / Re: Best free firewall for Windows?
« Last post by app103 on November 07, 2006, 09:31 AM »
Personally I've stopped using software firewalls; I depend on my NAT'ing router to keep incoming traffic away, and Kaspersky to keep malware from running. Of course I can't detect "phone home" in regular software that way, but oh well.

I am kind of doing the same, with the addition of AVG, Spybot, the spyware detector built into my browser, and Windows Firewall...untill I can find an alternative that won't dump everyone from my chatroom. (which I need to discuss with other room hosts I know)
