Found Deals and Discounts / Re: XYPlorer ($15) Nov 24 at BDJ

Josh, I read your posts, so I understand your problem.  Yes, I'll admit that I haven't found a file manager that completely replaces the Windows explorer implementations.  Anyway, what I did a long time ago is decide not to replace anything, just use each file manager as it's own separate program without replacing anything in the WIndows shell.  So default is still Explorer.  I know you really want a replacement, but yeah, it will be hard to find.  I don't anything about programming, but I figure it must be fairly difficult to write a third-party program to replace explorer that will work effortlessly on everyone's computer.  I mean, just think about all the dialog extender/replacements, and barely any of them work for all applications on your computer, and they often have issues with particular things here and there.  I just think replacing those kind of WIndows components must be difficult.

DonL, I still think your program is pretty great.

Whoa!  It's unusual for this to happen at DC, let's not break the great spirit of this site.

Josh, I feel it's a little unfair to call a program overrated due to a missing feature that is rather subtle.  It may not be the program you're looking for because you really need that feature, but I don't think it's a bad program because of it.  I don't think you meant that, though, at least, I didn't read it that way.

Anyway, personally, I feel XYplorer is a good program.  I use DOpus mainly, and Total Commander for backup or for obscure tasks now and then, but I've tried XYPlorer and was more than satisfied with it.  And the author is pretty receptive to user's needs.  Furthermore, Zaine (used) to highly recommend it and I respect his opinion on stuff like this.

There are so many choices for file managers.  A lot of them are good.  That's great for us, because we can get whatever we want!

General Software Discussion / Re: List of newbie questions regarding software
« Last post by superboyac on November 18, 2008, 05:39 PM »
Just putting this here as a reminder:

For some reason, I can't find a simple app that does this.

Basically what I want is a check list program that repeats the check list like a session.

Sure, there are to do list programs with recurring events but none that does this that resides at the systray.
I don't know what you mean.  If possible, please explain in more detail how the program should work.

I'm on the verge of using IQ exclusively.  I'm waiting to export my Texnotes info into IQ, but I can't do it until some other importing features are added.  I've made a Mantis issue of it.  Is there any chance of this happening?  If need be, I can do it manually, but it would be dreadful.

Wow, that's pretty cheap...$20.  Not bad at all.  For that price, I have no problem recommending this program to people (Texnotes, that is).  However, for me, I have no need for Texnotes now that I have InfoQube.

You know, I thought of the indirect function also, and I tried it and it didn't work.  I have no logical explanation for it.  Like you, I could have sworn that was the right solution.  More on this Monday when I'm back at work.
5008
I can't seem to figure this out.  I'm using the INDEX function but instead of typing the named range in the argument directly, I'm using a formula to do it (vlookup).  So I checked the formula by auditing, and the problem is this:  instead of calculating INDEX(vh,1,1) which would be correct, it ends up with INDEX("vh",1,1).  How can I do it so the quotation marks don't appear?
5009
Oh I know what the problem is.  The index function is assuming G2 is the range.  But I want it to assume that the content of G2 (vh) is the name of the reference to the range I want.  Ah!  How do I do that?
5010
One more question if anyone can help:
I have a named range, called "vh".  The named range itself is a dynamic range, using a formula like this:
=OFFSET('Vahik Haddadian'!$A$2,0,0,COUNTA('Vahik Haddadian'!$A:$A),5)
Now, I want to reference individual cells in this named range using the Index function, like:
=INDEX(vh,1,1)
And that works fine.

However, in that index function, I want to generate the "vh" part using a reference instead of directly typing it in:
=INDEX(G2,1,1)
where G2 is the cell whose content is "vh".
The problem is that when the "vh" argument is referenced, it doesn't work properly.  Only when "vh" is directly typed does it work properly.  Can anyone help me figure out why?

If it is due to filters, then I'm baffled, as I have not touched any of the filters.
This is a point I like to emphasize also.  This behavior should be minimized as much as possible.

Expect his version tomorrow, with the brand new FF Extension, which will ease web clippings
Pierre, no one can accuse you of not working hard!  We really appreciate you continuously adding features and dealing with our issues.

General Software Discussion / Tag&Rename, say it ain't so! (check box feature)
« Last post by superboyac on November 10, 2008, 10:44 PM »
Tag&Rename has long been one of my favorite programs of all time.  But their newest "release candidate" took out a much beloved feature of min:  check box selection.  There are two modes in the program: you can select the files like you would in a regular Explorer type application, by using ctrl and shift to select multiple files; or you can do it with check boxes.  I always preferred the check boxes because you can select a group of files, then click around to a bunch of other files, or even within your selection, without losing your initial selection set.  Without the check boxes, you lose your set once you click elsewhere.  It's much less productive, but probably more intuitive to normal Windows users.  The option was always there, which mode you wanted.  In the latest version, they took it out.  Why?  I don't know.  You never remove features, you only add!  I'm hoping it's just a mistake, they didn't even document it their version history, so I'm really hoping that's the case.  My only complaint about the program is that there's no good way to contact the authors.  They are not that responsive to emails and there's no discussion group or anything either.  But I still love the program.  Best audio file tagger/renamer ever made, no doubt.

Egh...ok, Pierre, I definitely didn't think about all those scenarios you described and I can see how the behavior is useful.  On the other hand, I probably agree with Armando that perhaps the "ecco" way may not be the best way for default behavior, or not the most intuitive.  But I really haven't thought it through enough to really have an opinion, especially once you bring up all those scenarios.

Jim, don't be afraid of it, though, whether you understand the program or not, it's still usable.  Actually, don't even bother learning more than you need to.

So, Pierre, regarding my problem, the issue for me is not the source/grids/checkbox thing.  To be more accurate, my real problem is that I have a grid open that shows a bunch of items.  I highlight all the items and export it to Excel.  I expect to see all those items in Excel, naturally.  So, like you said before, the exporting is the one that needs to be fixed.  How you do the source/parent thing is fine with me, either way.

So, you see, Jim?  I don't need to understand how the filtering works if I don't need to, when the real problem is that the Excel export doesn't work intuitively.

(Nice post above Armando.  Yes, good documentation is going to be a challenge for Pierre, there's so much to cover!)

Is there a way to use pivot tables to take all different named ranges and combine them all into on pivot table?  I assume it would use the "consolidate multiple ranges" in the pivot table options.  However, is there a way to set up pivot tables so that they don't do any kind of calculations on the data (like sum, count, average, etc.) but instead, just lists the contents of the data?

OK, thanks, I'll try it a little later...

But, yet another reason why I feel if an item is created in a grid, that grid should by default be the source for that item.  I just can't see much use for having a bunch of sub-items not having any source.

I'm trying to export to Excel...I highlight all the rows of items in my grid (all of them), and then I click the export to excel button.  I open the file, and only the very top level item is there.  How do I get all the other ones to appear in the excel file?

fenixproductions,
Shades explained pretty accurately what I meant by "normal".  In TC, you can just tell from the UI that it does not exactly conform to the way regular Windows file managers feel and look.  Like Shades said, a lot of people prefer a more Windows-like feel to their file manages.  Personally, I don't mind TC even though I use DOpus 99% of the time.

General Software Discussion / Re: Total Commander 7.03 for Windows released!

The reason why people swear by Total Commander is the following:
--Really cheap with lifetime upgrades/updates/etc.
--flexible license, you can use it anywhere (work, home, both)
--Fast!!  It's simple and super fast.

It is a tad quirky, so if you're looking for more normal file managers, then you move on to something else.  I moved on to DOpus.  I wouldn't necessarily go to SpeedCommander, it's not worth it.  I'd go to XYPlorer and DOpus before SPeedCommander.

You forgot about:
- Shift (or Alt) + LMB drag -> move,
- LMB drag + quick RMB -> move,
- Ctrl + Shift + LMB drag -> Create shortcut,
- Shift + RMB drag -> drag menu -> Copy, Move, Create Shortcut, Cancel and associated app menu (ex. WinRAR).

I didn't forget.  I just don't use those.

TC is faster and better for certain tasks.  I've always thought that it had the fastest and most efficient mouse navigation setup...
Could you please elaborate?
I use Dopus, and would like to check out TC

Well, I went into excruciating detail in a thread at the DOpus forums, but I'll just quote it here as well:

I know there are already a lot of options for the left, middle, and right-click when in Power/Detail mode. But for the past 2-3 years of using DOpus, I keep missing some options that would really help make mouse navigation better. I keep going back to the way Total Commander handles mouse clicking...it's just a lot easier and faster than any combination I've tried with DOpus. This is the best combination that I have experienced, and I'll describe it in detail:

Left-clicking:
left clicking selects a file, but you can't drag the mouse to select more files. If you drag, it will act like you're trying to drag&drop the file somewhere else. Furthermore, let's say a group of files are already selected; if you then left-click on any file, it doesn't alter the selection at all. As in, it doesn't add that file to the selection, nor does it clear the current selection. All it does is move the rectangular outline (which means that it is the current file; it's different from a file being highlighted). See the first picture for an example.

Middle-clicking
Middle-clicking doesn't really need to do anything. The only reason why I tried middle-clicking options in DOpus is because I couldn't get the left and right clicks to work the way I wanted, so I had to put some functionality into the middle-click to make up for it. I don't particularly like using the middle click, because it's a wheel and all. If the left and right clicking works like I'm saying, middle clicking will just be a nice luxury to have, but not essential. That's what I love about DOpus, all the options.

Right-clicking
Right-clicking should just be what DOpus already calls "Normal drag-select". However, the one thing TC does that is nice is that if you hold the right button down for like a second, then the right-click context menus pop-up. That's nice because when you're drag-selecting, you don't want to have the context menu popping up. But sometimes, you do want the context menu, without altering the selection. So holding the button is a good way to do this.

Anyway, I really hope this can be implemented. It's the only thing left in TC that I miss.

Oh sweet!  Thanks Darwin!  Yeah, I use ASAP a lot, I guess I didn't look hard enough...there are so many things after all!
5023
I can't figure out how to do this.  I have an Excel Workbook with multiple sheets.  They all have the same columns, but the number of rows is different in each column.  I'd like to, in a separate sheet, put all the rows from all the sheets on top of one another in one long list.  How do I do this?  I want the big list to be live-linked to the other cells, I don't want to simply copy them.  Any changes to the original cells will be shown in the big sheet.  The big sheet is simply a summary sheet for display purposes.

The ranges in each sheet is named using the Named Ranges feature.  And I've somehow figured out how to make the ranges dynamic (I don't remember how).  That means whenever a row is added to a sheet, the named range automatically adds that row to the range.

I tried using pivot tables, but I'm not very advanced with them.  I also tried consolidating the ranges.  The problem with both of these seem to be that it assumes you want to do some calculation on the data, like summing them or averaging them.  I don't want to do that.  I simply want to just copy the cells and combine them all in one big list.  No calculation, or function or anything like that.

Thanks!!

General Software Discussion / SideSlide...does anyone use this?
« Last post by superboyac on November 06, 2008, 04:40 PM »
Anyone use this program (SideSlide)?  I'm trying to get my mind around what it's supposed to be used for, and I can't quite figure it out.  To me, it seems to be some kind of desktop icon and launcher/organizer, but can do other things as well.  I was very curious about it, but I can't find a need for it.  For launching programs, I don't think it can beat mouser's FARR or LBC, and for the other things it does like place notes, alarms, reminders and stuff, there are several programs better for that.  I don't know.  It's definitely a complicated program that seems geared towards powerusers.  I'm curious how people use it.

[edit] Added link.  Sheesh.
5025
Yup this is the one!  Man, that was one of my hardest searches in a long time.  Yes!  THanks mouser!  It was killing me!

I don't know about the program yet, I don't know if I like it or not.  Obviously, I tried it a long time ago and didn't use it.  So I'll post back a little later.  Of course, I didn't like InfoQube (SQLNotes) in the beginning either.
