Living Room / Re: digg requires far too much effort!
« Last post by app103 on November 23, 2006, 02:51 PM »
That's what most of the links you see posted here in the forum are...the best collected from various social bookmarking sites and our click adventures...posted here by other dc members, for your enjoyment.

The highest rated of our bookmarks, the ones you really must see, will be highest in number of replies to the posts.

Personally, I don't like digg. I think sites like StumbleUpon and Clipmarks are much better.

I have even added the feed of the 10 most recent clips from Clipmarks to the sidebar on my blog.

I am not sure if anyone besides me is clicking them though. When I update my blog and check to make sure my post came out right, one of those links in my sidebar will usually catch my attention. Usually a bunch of crap, but even 1 interesting link a day makes it worth it to me. And if I refresh the page I get different ones.

Nope. I betcha he's been here -> http://www.gizmodiva.com/
 :P :P

omg...that site is fantastic!

If that is where mouser has been hanging out, he has good taste.

While the site may have a pink feminine thing going on (yuck!), not everything on the site is pink, or feminine, or just for women....there is some really cool stuff there.

It might not be exactly what you had in mind, but I have a 'christmas lights' screensaver that I made a long time ago, on my art site.

I was going to post this as a reply before but wasn't sure if I should.

It's on the screensavers page...can't miss it.

Both WhatPulse and the banner site are run by the same guys.

Use the same name, email & pass for both.

I will explain how I did the banner I made for myself.

First, right click and save this image to your hard drive:

Now log in here:

http://pulse.offbeat-zero.net (make an account there first)

  • Click Upload a Background, on the left menu.
  • Click the Browse button and select the graphic I told you to save.
  • Type DonationCoder in the name box.
  • Click Submit.

Click Customize on the menu on the left and use these settings:

Click the Submit button.

Right above the settings box you will find the code you need to add to your signature.

Copy that.

Now...on the dc forum, at the top...

  • Click My Profile.
  • Click Forum Profile Information on the left menu.
  • Enter the signature code you copied into the box where it says Signature.
  • Click the Change Profile button at the bottom of the page.

All done.

If you want to make the banner a link to the team page, use the bbcode for url and point it at http://whatpulse.org/stats/teams/10466/

Any other questions or problems, just ask. I will be happy to help.

Living Room / Would you like a rare & valuable Cody mug?
« Last post by app103 on November 19, 2006, 08:04 AM »
Mouser has generously donated one rare & valuable Cody mug as a prize for a little contest...

It will go to our busiest typer.

TFR8A9.gif
Is this you?

GOE participants will get a chance to practice all those new productivity skills you have been learning.

cody mug.jpgcody mug.jpgcody mug.jpgcody mug.jpgcody mug.jpgcody mug.jpgcody mug.jpgcody mug.jpgcody mug.jpgcody mug.jpg

As some may know, I have started a DonationCoder WhatPulse team.

For those that don't know what that is, I made a post awhile back about it.

Anybody that is part of the team will be elegible to win a Cody mug. (except me)

Anybody that isn't on the team yet, hurry up and join before the contest begins. I am giving you plenty of notice to get signed up and everything running correctly.

cody mug.jpgcody mug.jpgcody mug.jpgcody mug.jpgcody mug.jpgcody mug.jpgcody mug.jpgcody mug.jpgcody mug.jpgcody mug.jpg

At midnight on Saturday, November 25, 2006, NYC time, I will take a screenshot of the team page.

You will then have 7 days to be your most productive self and type as many keys as you can. No cheating please, you have to type them all yourself with your own 2 hands and/or feet. (or head)

To make this fair to new team members, only keystrokes made after I make the screenshot will count. Please have your WhatPulse client set up to make automatic pulses about once per hour or every 1000 keys.

The team member that has accumulated the most keystrokes by midnight on Saturday, December 2, 2006, NYC time, will recieve 1 rare & valuable Cody mug.

Anybody that would like to display their stats in a team banner in their signature, like mine, read my next post below for my official super easy to follow tutorial.

You may send me a private message on the forum to ask for individual help setting things up, if you need it. Don't be afraid of me, I don't bite and I am MEGA patient. :-*

At this time, the WhatPulse client is only available for Windows. (my appologies to Mac & Linux users)

The hugging man's story of how this all started...
Warning: It may make you cry.

I'd been living in London when my world turned upside down and I'd had to come home. By the time my plane landed back in Sydney, all I had left was a carry on bag full of clothes and a world of troubles. No one to welcome me back, no place to call home. I was a tourist in my hometown.
Standing there in the arrivals terminal, watching other passengers meeting their waiting friends and family, with open arms and smiling faces, hugging and laughing together, I wanted someone out there to be waiting for me. To be happy to see me. To smile at me. To hug me.

Living Room / Wiki of the Week: Wikimapia
« Last post by app103 on November 17, 2006, 03:23 AM »
This is the first in a series of weekly posts introducing you to smaller lesser known wikis on the web.

The goal will be to introduce you to new sources of information on specific topics, and hopefully those of us with knowledge in these topic areas may want to contribute to the wikis and improve them.

Our first stop: Wikimapia - Let's Describe the Whole World

At first it seems like just a giant Google map.

giant map.png

But when you click an area, you are zoomed in for closer inspection and given a chance to describe a place you are familar with, or read a description someone else has given.

Take a look at your own neighborhood on this wiki.
Click the Wikimapia menu at the top and select "Search City" and type in the name of your town. Then select the correct one from the list.

my neighborhood.png
(my neighborhood)

Are the parks, hospitals, and other landmarks labeled and described? If not, maybe you might want to contribute a description for a few.

Here I am adding a description of a supermarket near my house:

Step 1: adding a place:

Zoom in on the location you want to describe and click the red "add place" button at the top. Then adjust the box over the location. When you have it the way you want it, click OK.
adding place1.png

Step 2: Add the description:
adding place2.png

As soon as it is approved, it will be added to the map:
adding place3.png

Have you ever wondered about the neighborhood that an online friend lives in? Zoom in on their town and see what kinds of landmarks have been labeled.

"mouserville":

I hope you have enjoyed this wiki. Come back next Friday and I will introduce you to another.  :)

The reason it may be worth it to go for a good one is that it does pretty well when integrated with Dragon Naturally Speaking. Again, I have not tried this.

I think that is only for recordings of your own voice...not when there is multiple voices in the recording or a voice other than what you have profiles for in Dragon.

Each person has to train it themselves. Dragon doesn't respond well to voice patterns it doesn't know.

I love puzzle games.  :-*

I also like competing when I play. The problem with most of the games I have, is that I am too good at them to compete with other members of my family.

Lexicon is the exception.  It's like Scrabble.

It's one of the few things on a pc that my husband can actually handle. He's not too bad at it either.

I used Paintshop Pro to make mine.

Instead of going to 'Save as..." and saving as a .gif, I used the "Export to GIF Optimizer" under the file menu...has much more options and a wizard if needed.

I can set what color I want as transparent there.

You will not see the color as being transparent if you open it in a graphics editor when complete, but it will show as transparent in various applications that support .gif transparencies, such as a browser.

I created and saved each frame this way.

Then I used Animation Shop 3, which is included in Paintshop Pro, to assemble the animation and set the frame times.

I know I said this section is off limits to me from now on, but this was something I just had to share.

When I first came across this site, seeing that list on the front page made me cry. But as I browsed the site it actually made me smile. This is one of the best discoveries I have made in awhile.

This takes the idea of a ToDo list to a whole new level.

This site is inspiring, motivational, and highly social.

Click something in that big list on the front page and you are immediately taken to a page where you can see who is attempting to do it, journals of people charting their progress & feelings, a gallery of user submitted inspirational images, a list of people who have done it, a place to ask questions of people that have accomplished that goal.

If you don't see anything on the front page that appeals to you and you can't think of something on your own...refresh...the list will change.

Pick 43 things.

They don't have to be big things. You can start out small.

Choose from a list of things that others feel are worthwhile or come up with one of your own. The point is to do something you feel is worth doing.

Developer's Corner / Re: New Game Industry Scholarship for Women
« Last post by app103 on November 11, 2006, 07:03 AM »
Hmmm, the only thing about something like this is that if it were the other way around and a scholarship was being restricted to men only there would be complete uproar with people screaming about sexism and equal rights >:(

Personally I don't believe in giving someone special treatment based on something they have no control over or something that is irrelevant. You don't get to pick your gender or race or geographic location of birth. Receiving special advantages for these things isn't fair to others....that's how I look at it.

The longer we perpetuate this notion of making up for past discrimination by giving the groups that were slighted, in the past, special treatment; the longer it will take before those groups will be truly treated as equals. Singling them out says 'they are different' in ways that shouldn't matter.  >:(

If I am a smart woman, don't make a big deal about it because I am female...make a big deal about it because I am smart. Being female is irrelevant here.

But...

If it's your money you are giving away, you have the right to choose who you are going to give it to. That being said, they have every right in the world to give it to a female if they choose...or someone under 4' 10"...or someone left handed...or to someone of a specific race.

Here is a list of other unusual scholarships:  http://finaid.org/sc...rships/unusual.phtml

There are other scholarships available based things that could be considered 'unfair':

There was only one reason why I posted the link:  It could be useful and of interest to someone.
I don't have to agree with them only giving it out to females to think it could be of use to someone.  ;)

Edit: Changed link for Juniata College to point at Left-Handed Scholarship info page.

General Software Discussion / Do you know someone that just hates Clippy?
« Last post by app103 on November 11, 2006, 04:25 AM »
Cute little freeware program that takes the Dr. Windows idea to another level.

Have you ever been working in Windows and a small annoying Clippy assistant appeared? We have too, that is why we created this prank software called Clippy.Clippy is a simulated office assistant that, when ran, will hide in the background for 1 minute then popup in the lower right hand corner of the screen and say something useless. There is no right-click Hide option on our Clippy prank, you will think there is no way to get rid of it (but there is). Every minute, Clippy pops up spouting useless nonsense about your computer. Clippy looks exactly like the annoying Clippy assistant you are used to, complete with sound and a variable size hint box based on the size of the hint. That is not all! Clippy comes with a dozen or so default messages, but Clippy can be customized to fit your needs.

Comes with such message gems as these:

  • It appears you are connected to the Internet.
  • I see that you have been using your mouse.
  • Your computer seems to be turned on.
  • It looks like your keyboard is working correctly.
  • Your productivity has been decreasing lately. I hope everything is ok.
  • Sometimes I just popup for no particular reason, like now.
  • I have detected a mouse move, this was normal.
  • Your posture seems to be degrading, please reposition yourself now.
  • Your Windows Desktop icons are still there.
  • Your monitor is operational.

Living Room / TV will be shut in 10 years, says Bill Gates
« Last post by app103 on November 11, 2006, 03:54 AM »
Television as we know it today will become obsolete in the next 10 years, said Microsoft founder Bill Gates. He was speaking at the First Global Competitiveness Forum in Riyadh during his first visit to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. “I had my children with me recently and while we were walking in a shopping area, there was this record store and my son asked me: ‘What is a record?’ Well, he has never seen a record. If I take him to a museum, he will see one. Yes, he knows what a TV is, but 10 years from now even TV will be something people will look back on and say: ‘Well, how inconvenient that was. You couldn’t carry it with you wherever you wanted to, and you couldn’t organise it the way you would’ve liked to,” Mr Gates said during his keynote address.
