General Review Discussion / Re: Free PDF tools review?
« Last post by Grorgy on September 17, 2007, 07:01 AM »
you are right it does do more than a reader, but given there are so many free readers out there they need to add something to make people want to use their software and, when needed, purchase their complete solution, just another marketing ploy, but hey, if it works in our favour, i'm all for it

Living Room / Re: How much RAM do you have on your PC?
« Last post by Grorgy on September 16, 2007, 03:52 AM »
i got 760 mb on my celeron 1.5 laptop, would gave got more but its too expensive, or was when i got it, but going from 512 to 760 made a big difference.  On my desk i just went from 1 to 2gb of ram.  Its a dual core amd and the extra RAM has made a noticeable difference in performance once up and running, booting is still a bit slow but ya cant have everything and we are only talking a minute or 2 at most for the whole process anyway

Yeah, I was vaguely tempted by the offer when it was available here, but I have 2003 pro which I can use on my desk pc and on my laptop, and the offer licence only allowed 1 pc to have it installed.  And I saw no compelling reason to upgrade.

« Last post by Grorgy on September 14, 2007, 08:41 PM »
Thanks for that steeladept, good tips.  Just for interest I now have 2 gb of ram, 512 in each slot and its purring away, even after all the abuse I hurled at it, that thread on expletives was most useful lol.

Edit, thinking about it and the way it was fixed, there must have just been a small bit of plastic sticking out in the slot, wouldnt stop it going in but stopped it getting a good connection

Thanks mouser, your 8 attempts made me keep trying, must have put it in and out 30 times at least,  so after trying to get some compressed air, none within 50Km of me, i resorted to a straw and a bicycle pump lol.  I then turned to the trusty toothpick, figuring the slot was dead as it was, so a bit of butchery wont hurt a lot, dragged it up and down the thing shoved the stick in and it worked  :)

Living Room / Before I head to the computer shop... (Memory slot problem)
« Last post by Grorgy on September 14, 2007, 01:31 PM »
I just got myself an extra gig of ram which I tried to install.  I got a continuous sort of beeping tell me something was wrong, so I check it was all installed ok sitting right that sort of stuff, still beeped, so on a first in last out basis i took out the last stick, and it booted ok.  So after a bit of playing I've determined that there is most likely a dodgy memory slot as the memory (all of it) works in other slots.  I presently have the new memory installed in the first 2 slots.

So has anyone got any ideas as to what I might try before I spend more money  :(

Any help and most suggestions accepted gratefully  :)

It's a gigabyte ga-m51gm-s2g mother board with an AMD 3800 x2 processor

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Kaspersky Internet Security 7
« Last post by Grorgy on September 13, 2007, 05:32 AM »
One thing I've noticed in the forums over at kaspersky is do not lose your licence key, the moderator of the forum keeps stressing that they will not give you a new key if its lost, you have to buy it again which could get a wee bit expensive.

Here in the land down under we seem to have upset a certain maker of computer software and they decided to sue a community forum  :o

In a move that could set a nasty precedent for Australian website operators and their users, a software firm is suing a community website over comments published on its message board.

there was a note in the blog at the site about errors, they have called in 'outside experts' who have worked for adobe in the past so they probably will get this up to scratch soon.

Looks interesting OCRman, and welcome.  I will be very interested when you get to some of the cheaper and free alternatives, i don't do a lot of OCR work but its incredibly frustrating when you know thats what you need, but the price is just way too much for the amount of use versus other more important things.

I wasn't here for last years but i read a lot of what went on, got some good ideas, got to admit tho I've gone from being a disorganised procrastinator to someone who now knows exactly what i haven't done, so I'll be in it, see what i can pick up   :)

Funny you should mention that, i had deleted it off my list of feeds last night because I hadn't seen anything that was useful, except the odd thing that was on all the other sites anyway
