Besides just quitting and restarting explorer.exe you need to delete items under the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

The two items are IconStreams and PastIconStreams.

After deleting both of those items, then quit explorer.exe and restart it.

As always you should first export both of the above items - or the key "TrayNotify" itself, just in case. Though I have been using this fix for a couple years without a problem. Supposedly for Vista but works in Windows 7 for me.

Here's a reference link, and if you search you can find more of the same:

Thanks!

Yeah, and mine is just snap and POP! No more crackle... not really sure when the crackle went away. Oh well - I just had one of those birthdays last week that my family insisted on celebrating - for purely sadistic reasons! And I didn't even care - that's the sad part!

I guess the snap will go next!

Thanks LM!

I think I'll check it out a little more first. My computer is a new one and is running Windows 7 64-bit. I had to drop back to IE8 too on the old box but naturally the new one came with a fresh copy of IE9 on it. Thus far UR seems to be running OK other than not being able to view Office docs internally here. And since I know that the 2010 docs can be an issue I'm not yet blaming that on IE9.

Hmm, usually I would just jump in and try out the registry fix anyway, but with the new machine I'm acting like someone with a new car in a mall parking lot! I'll keep trying to check out the fix first!

Thanks again!

LM7, do you know that those registry fixes have been updated to accommodate Office 2010? They were previously only valid up to Office 2007, IIRC.

In Office 2010 Microsoft added the "Microsoft Office Software Protection Platform Service", mainly to take Office files out of the situations/locations where macro-type worms and the like can be easily planted. One of its changes was to disallow the opening of Office files in Internet Explorer, which is how Ultra Recall accesses them as it uses IE for its internal browser. I know that when Office 2010 was initially released those registry keys did not fix the issue and in some cases caused problems with IE7 (or it might have been IE8?) and Office 2010. Then when IE 9 was released and caused problems for all or most apps that used IE for their internal browsers, users had to uninstall IE9, which automatically dropped users back to IE8 (IF they used the Office Uninstall link in the Start Menu). The registry keys to be added look the same as they were for Office 2007.

I did search around for a fix to allow opening Office files in IE, but all I could find was the opposite - ways to prevent that! If those registry fixes work for Office 2010 I'll make the changes immediately! I prefer doing it manually so I can backup each key I remove before making any changes.

Thanks!

I bought a license for UltraRecall Pro v3 when it was on BdJ in 2008.  Kinook say V4 is a major upgrade that I would have to pay for.  This Bits deal at $39 is cheaper than their regular upgrade price of $50: Kinook prices.

Very true! Me? Purchased it on the same Bits deal you did - and then paid $50.00 for the upgrade back in August 2009 - (call me Dumberer!). If you plan to upgrade this is a much better way!

Hey Tom!

Copying (storing copies) or linking naturally affects the size of your UR database. I use only Copy and don’t link anything at all. I have run into problems in other similar databases where you link but moving or changing the name of a file in Explorer, DOpus, etc. screws everything up royally. And my UR databases haven't gotten slower or anything, so I copy all.

It is not an IE limitation that prevents opening Office files; it's the new "Protected" something or another concept that's built into Office 2010. Wish I had realized this before buying the doggone suite. They sure don’t mention such deleted features in the promo details.

Thanks!

Oops - another little irritant I just discovered, though it is actually a Microsoft thing, not directly an Ultra Recall thing. Prior to this I could open and edit any Microsoft document (Word, Excel, Outlook - never tried PPT or PUB) within Ultra Recall. Nice feature, not having to open the Office app associated with the file. Now however with Office 2010, Microsoft has disallowed opening any file outside of the associated Office 2010 app.   :(   >:(

Ultra Recall uses Internet Explorer as it's internal browser and so used that to open/edit Microsoft Office files. Now Microsoft no longer allows Office files to open in IE - safety/security thing apparently, or so Microsoft claims. A real PITA though. Now clicking on an Office file inside Ultra Recall opens the file in its native app - Word, Excel, etc. Not a tremendous hardship but it is nice to be able to do it all in UR. Hopefully someone finds a hack for this!

Thank you.

You have a choice whether to Link or Copy documents, emails, web pages, etc. to Ultra Recall.

You can search for all or any words whether in the title or body of any document. Also you can have it search as you type or wait till finished and then click "Search".

As an addendum to my post above, I will say that one of Ultra Recall's biggest missing features is the one that is biting me hard right now: the inability to save its settings for future use. I just reinstalled UR-Pro on my brand new computer and have spent the last hour + trying to get the layouts and settings just like they were before. Unfortunately it is not as simple as making a copy of an .ini or .dat file; UR stores its settings in the Windows registry, so unless you have a way to back-up your previous computer's registry in a way that allows you to restore only certain keys or at least read the settings in a human-recognizable language, then you must simply start over and try to get it close. I imagine that I COULD have made screen captures of each settings page but that wasn’t on my mind when I was making sure I had all the necessary setup files and registration codes available for the re-installations of all my software. Drats!!

Not truly a problem... just a pretty damn good annoyance!

Thanks!

Re: Bits - Ultra Recall

I've been using Ultra Recall Professional since I purchased it with a discount back in June 2008. First, I must say that it is not a program that you just download, fire it up and start using it like a pro. At least not me anyway! It is a fairly complex program and while the Help file is very detailed and extensive, it is also written as if for programmer types. By that I mean that after reading it all the way through - and that was a heck of a long read! - I was so damn lost I thought I might just close Ultra Recall and never open it again. OK, maybe not quite that bad, but I was pretty confused. The forum is an OK source of info, at least from a few experienced members, though there were some who seemed, well, a bit "elitist", if you can understand what I mean by that. I remember one such ass... err... forum member... actually posting that Ultra Recall required a higher IQ than many of the new users posting stup..., uhh, let's say very "beginner"-type questions in the forum. All in all, though, there were also some members there who were very helpful to me personally, plus reading back through older threads also helped me a lot.

All in all Ultra Recall has been one of my most used programs, as I store all my important documents in it. I can search for any document within Ultra Recall and usually find it faster than otherwise. Of course I only use the documents stored in UR for reference; if I need to revise and resend anything I will still use the original document in its native app. My copies of documents in UR is primarily for organization.

@J-MAc: Thankyou. I had not known that the PC brigade had ameliorated the definition of the terminology for "psychopathy".

Well, it seems that most people - including psych academians - are still using the old terms as if things had never changed, which I actually appreciate!

One of the more accurate comments I can think of to say about that is:
"Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a piece of sh*t by the clean end."
(Texas A&M website)

How true! Nice quote.

J-Mac, nice one on the new Puget system! Let us know what you think of it (and your overall experience), I still haven't reported on mine, but I'm still loving it 2+ months later. :D

SBAC: Your BSODs could be Comodo, that's definitely something I'd check early on, but do seem potentially hardware-related. Run a memory scan (Memtest86+ is my recommendation). Also, did you actually move/change any hardware *inside* the case recently? If so you might have bumped something...

I looked at them but there was no place to purchase one except Verizon or AT&T - and I am not going to do that. They always manage to try and control what I can do, trying to force me into buying it or subscribing to it through them. They can kiss my butt!

I have always rooted any smartphone to get around that stuff. My iPad 2 is wifi only, but I can use it at home and most anywhere else via Comcast's hotspots - they are all over this whole area; I have nt found a location where I can't log in to a Comcast hotspot.   :D

Hey Supe - why do you have iTunes installed? For an iPad or iPhone? I got an iPad for Christmas and I have nt yet installed iTunes. Don’t think I will either. So far I have been able to get most files I want on the iPad via DropBox. However each time I download a file from DropBox it (DB) stops showing my list of files! Page says "Loading" but the entire file list is missing. Next day I go to the DB site and it's fine. I select a handful of files again and download them. Then the file list disappears once again. I haven't figured this out yet.

Thanks!

Everything is great when it is working.... but it continually breaks down here. My D:\ drive is my data drive - all data and media files are there. It is the largest and most used drive of the several I have. And Everything drops it at least two or three times a week! I mean, I get some results on D:\ drive, but mostly it ignores it. Settings are correct, the drive is healthy, and Everything initially indexes it along with the others. But then - it decides not to search it any more. No error mentioned in its errorlog.

No other utility or program does this with D:, so I Don’t know why Everything has a problem with it. I do notice though that a few others mention the same issue on their forum, and it is always D:\ drive.

So c'mon mouser!

Thanks!

Ah, but psychopathy (and sociopathy for that matter) doesn’t exist anymore officially!   :tellme:

Both of those terms are now labelled as "Antisocial Behavior Personality" in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV). New and improved insight into such personality disorders? Or simply more political correctness garbage in the English language?

Oh, who cares! Just put 'em in a rocket ship and send 'em out into space.... somewhere. Can't hurt anybody out there... Right?  (Anybody see the movie "Jason X"?!   ;D 8)

An added benefit to the above "solution" is that ~4% of CEOs in the US are estimated to be psychopaths**, which is four times the number in the general population. So you'll be sending a few of those "bonus  (bone-us?) babies" into space with the rest of them! Makes me feel better!!

And just for those who think that some people (now apparently unofficially known as "The Internet") might have gone a bit too far in their treatment of dear Mr. Christoforo, here's what he was doing to his former employer lately:

Headline on The Escapist web site - [UPDATE] Ocean Marketing Attempts To Extort Former Client

A quote from Moisés Chiullan, the PR specialist that N-Control hired to try and clean up the mess left by Christoforo. This is from an AMA he set up on Reddit three days ago:

I've been trying to get him to give up the access to these things he's been holding hostage (email accounts, Twitter, etc) by asking nicely for a couple of days. The gloves are off now.

Paul told me on the phone two hours ago that "Eight months ago, I locked down all this stuff so they wouldn't be able to fuck with me. If they don't give me what I want, it's war." His demands include a contract written on his terms and substantial compensation, both immediate and for as long as the company continues to exist. He flaunted the PR debacle he created as proof that he "made the company a success", citing all the media and public attention as the "best thing that ever happened to Avenger".

He didn't count on the fact that I anticipated all of this and have been a computer hardware and web tech since I was 14.

The thing we did have is control over the AvengerController.com domain. It was transferred away from its original account, which Paul has complete control of. Because of how GoDaddy works, that old account retained all of the email addresses and their master control settings (forwarding and so on). He has continued to respond to customer emails from his personal GMail account and lied to me repeatedly about doing so.

I tried to play nice, and Paul played stupid, acting like he didn't have access to this master account, blaming his "Indian outsourced tech team" being on vacation. I gave him two days to give over N-Control's digital property.

He finally leveled with me tonight that he knew I wasn't that stupid and that he was lying about his access to all these accounts. That's when he issued the above-mentioned threat. He reiterated that he had the hosting, email, and everything on lockdown.

Christoforo's response, also on that same Reddit AMA, after Chiullan told him he would take action if Christoforo continued speaking to the press on behalf of N-Control: (I think I hid the quote behind one of those little gray boxes - we'll see!)

Spoiler
"don't you fucking threaten me! You don't know who the fuck you're dealing with! I will do things to you that you cannot imagine, they are so fucking bad! YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M CAPABLE OF!"

Yikes!

I do see though that Chiullan has had some success. A follow-up quote:

Mr. Christoforo has very recently become much more forthcoming and helpful regarding a variety of Avenger/N-Control's digital assets that we requested he return a few days ago (as mentioned below in detail). We thank him for his renewed helpfulness.

This sudden bout of agreeableness (not even a real word!) came right after the first quote above was posted on Reddit. So even after all of this happening, Christoforo tried to extort N-Control for a new contract with substantial compensation for as long as N-Control is in business. Ha! He doesn’t give up easily!

The Reddit AMA set up by Chiullan is here.  Read it only if you can stand any more of this crap.

Anyway this makes me feel a little less sympathetic toward Paul.

Jim

The line I bolded above brought an amused smile and raised eyebrows from an attorney friend of mine back when it first came out. I asked him if making a statement like that in an e-mail is actionable. He just smiled and said: "What do you think?"

Only if acted upon. Threats generally aren't actionable unless they present an imminent physical danger.  (I am not a lawyer, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once...   :P  )

If Mr. C has been around as long as he's said he has - and allegedly has 125 web professionals at his beck & call, it would be an easy matter to fake some threatening and harassing actions. And based on the bad temper, threats, and lack of judgement displayed in some of his communications, I wouldn't put it beyond possible.

In reality - Christoforo was the sole employee of Ocean Marketing. There were no other employees.   ;D   What a guy!

I happened to read a tweet about Christoforo's initial email exchange that was published on Penny Arcade and read it almost immediately after it was posted. A little later I read it aloud to my wife and when I read Mike's line right after Cristoforo mentioned that he liked Penny Arcade, "I’m glad you like it! You will be on it tomorrow:) " she laughed. The next day she read where Christoforo begged Mike to make it stop. It read like:

Christoforo:  “You have the power Mike Please make it stop”

Mike's comment:   The reality is that once I had posted the emails I didn’t have the power anymore. The Internet had it now and nothing I said or did was going to change that.

She asked me "What does he mean?" and I was already googling "ocean marketing". Ha! A few hundred million results! And most were NOT unrelated BS results. This guy was already done, nothing left but the bones - if that. I showed Robin and said "That's what he meant!"

Like the proverbial trainwreck that horrifies you but you can't avert your gaze, I read about all that happened to this guy for over an hour! It's really hard to comprehend just how totally destroyed this guy was in a day!

Really sad, but hard not to admire the raw and terrible power of this medium.
