Living Room / issues with uefi, more than 6 drives, ahci, windows 8.
« Last post by superboyac on January 18, 2015, 05:45 PM »
i was planning on upgrading a windows 7 desktop to windows 8.  the first time i tried installing, it worked fine, but i first had to disconnect all drives other than the OS drive to be able to go through the installation.  Then, I couldn't connect my external drive because it would be the 7th drive connected.  So i remember this issue back when i was upgrading to windows 7.  it had something to do with a 6 drive limit, drives larger than 2TB, uefi booting, and ahci.

So it appears i'm having this issue again.  Except this time, I can't seem to be able to install windows 8 in uefi mode.  I've tried all the instructions online, mainly the advice to boot from usb on a rufus created disc with fat32 and uefi options chosen.  the problem is that this disc will not boot into the installer.  it just hangs with a blinking cursor.

I have run out of options.  I think part of the problem is the alienware motherboard I'm using, which I'm not too thrilled with.  it's an obscure, off the consumer market board, and not much available in terms of online discussion or drivers or anything.  I believe it's actually an MS-7543 motherboard originally made by MSI v1.0.

Anyway, I'll probably give up and just do a new computer later.  Probably the server i've been planning to build for years.

RightNote has had a 3.0 for awhile.

I think one big thing is Evernote integration.

***  Anybody using it?  Your thoughts? ***
I use it.  It's ok, gets the job done.  I thought I would love that feature as a way to keep notes synced or some idea like that.  but in the end, I just don't use it much.  I do it once or twice a year when I need to search through evernote for a lost clip or something.  I think my problem is that it becomes this thought, "Do I put this note in rightnote?  or evernote?" or I'm on my phone and don't have rightnote, so i stick it in evernote to later sync with rightnote, sheesh.  So i just don't care after a while.

My point is, I don't consider the evernote functionality a big deal.  It wouldn't even factor in my decision to use Rightnote or not.

I tried it.  It's a bit... clunky, but gets the job done.  The clunkiness is a function of the limiters on the Evernote interface, rather than on Rightnote.

In all honesty, however, since I can write in Markdown in Evernote now, I've dropped using Rightnote for all intents and purposes.
I'm interested in how you use markdown, if you don't mind.

I just finished putting some organ on my friends' tracks, for this upcoming album:

So it's coming up soon!  It was a delightful track, if I do say so myself.  A sound we've been talking about for years.

@4wd - BTW, you spelled "Godvernment" wrong there.

I liked "godverment" more.

Especially now that so many are acting like divinely ordained beings, with godlike indifference towards their charters, rather than as legally constituted and defined bodies whose function was to serve those who created them.

Such monsters we create for ourselves and loved ones! :-\

Renegade was being sarcastic, methinks  ;D

Really? Gee thx... I had no idea. ;) ;D
Allow me...sometimes people will say something, and the words and logic are all reasonable.  But there's a mocking tone underneath it all.  This is called sarcasm.  The more you know!
Furthermore, sometimes, such a thing can occur, and the audience may not necessarily recognize it.  Which may leave you wondering why instead of laughter, you are now holding a steak on your eye.
Let me know if I can be of more assistance.

General Software Discussion / Re: Beware of download sites
« Last post by superboyac on January 13, 2015, 03:42 PM »
Suggestion: Instead of "download sites" it might be better if we refer to them as file or download aggregators?

Almost anything can be a download site if it offers downloads. But aggregators are mostly or entirely nothing else but collections of downloadable files. Not everything aggregator sites list or do is at the behest (or even with the permission) of the software authors. So calling a site what it actually is goes a long way towards clearing up exactly where some of the lines of responsibility fall.
reminds me of my days trobuleshooting problems such as, "The internet is broken!!" which could mean any of the following:
--power cable is unplugged
--forgot password to a login site
--the printer is not printing (true story)
anyway, just funny.  yes, clear terminology helps.

More developments...
So I was initially high on Clip Studio/Manga Studio.  They are good, and have the great hardware mentioned.  However, I've been checking out the more recent features of photoshop and adobe's related products, and they are blowing me away.  VERY impressive.

Very good comic, BTW...
Thanks!  Will be added to my list.

If the domain has not been re-pointed, then though he doesn't have control of the domain, he does still have control of what the domain is pointed to.  He didn't sell them his servers, he sold a domain name.

Huh?

I think he means if the new owner hasn't updated the DNS records then having access to the old(/current) hosting account -(or just Admin level access to the relevant CMS)- would give one free reign to play.

Exactly.

Ignore me. I'm DeNSer than usual today. :)
Indeed.

I wanted to try this experiment...take an existing wordpress site and package it as an app.  And from there, the app and site are synced.  There is this program:
http://reactor.apppresser.com/

Seems to do it for a couple hundred bucks.  Any other recommendations?

It's a complicated sounding concept. How does the app on your phone know to pull updates and properly integrate the data?

I think html5 has helped stuff like this be easier.  It seems the app somehow packages all the structure and dependencies of the wordpress site into whatever is needed to make a standalone app.  It makes sense to me.  A lot of apps I've seen function almost exactly like a mobile version of websites, that's what got me thinking about it.

I need more female characters, so they get priority.

I shaved off the beard so you could basically sketch me as a guy or a girl. It's all fiction anyway.  ;)

Either way, I'm probably wearing short running shorts and have hairy legs. (Ok, that's true).

Somewhere between sardonic and deadpan. Is that a shade of yellow?
well that offers some interesting options.  Perhaps you can be a female, but a descendant of Annie Jones.

;D oh just remembered my favorite pianist vs. guitarist argument.

Regarding the chords for a song, a piano player wants to know the exact chord...don't just say F or F7...iit might by F9 or Fb9 or F7 or F13, they are not the same!!!  Then your realize the guitar player just cares about the F bit, and the rest he just makes up whatever he feels is "right".  So the pianist is playing the exact chord, the guitarist is playing something similar, but it sounds off.

the worst example of this was the song 'I'm Beginning to see the light".  because it's seemingly a simple 1-6-2-5 song.  But it's unorthodox in that it starts on the 6 instead of the 1.  man, I got into this whole thing with a guitar player for like a week on that.  because the fake books print it incorrectly, and the songs we listen to play it correctly.  So it just sounds off, but the difference is very subtle.  Am7 and C6 are the same exact chords.  Anyway, I spent an evening listening to the classic recordings to confirm and recreated a song chart for it, sent it to the guitarist, who I think was a bit offended at how big a deal I made of it.

damn i love music.
ok back on topic.

IMO Guitar is paradoxically easier and more difficult to play than a piano or keyboard. Which is probably why some people gravitate to one or the other depending upon how their brain works.
This seems very true.  I've tried guitar a little, played piano a lot.  From what I've seen, the guitar brain seems to lean towards the artistic/abstract like geometry, while the piano brain seems to be much more algebraic.  At least to me.

On the piano, everything is linear.  The higher note is always more to the right, the spaces between them are equal everywhere.  Unfortunately, that means I have to learn 12 different "things" to master all the keys.

On guitar, it's almost the opposite.  Notes are layered on top of each other and you have several options as far as paths to take for the melody.  On piano, one melody = one option...guitar is one melody = several options.  Same goes for chords.

If you don't know anything about music, i feel piano is easier to get into.  because it's all linear, so that's easy.  And if you press a key, you hear the sounds, no practice needed.  On guitar, just to get a decent sound might take a while, as you have to develop calluses, learn how to get a clean pick.  And (IMO) it's more difficult to get into the theory because you're immediately dealing with complex layers and patterns vs. straight linear thinking.  Also, a lot of guitar players tend to get stuck in the chord strumming phase and never are able to pick a melody because of this.  I think the good guitar players think in patterns and shapes because one or two patterns will cover all keys, unlike a piano.  So piano players think more linearly or use their memorization skills to really get good.  Although a girl recently told me she thinks in shapes, which i thought was interesting.  I'm all numbers when I play.
