Intro:

Jan-S posted about this little game earlier today: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=8227.0.  After downloading it and trying it out, and laughing so hard that I cried, I had to let you all know what its all about.

interface.png

Who is this app designed for:

Anyone with a computer fast enough to handle it, and an appreciation for physical humor.

The Good

This is a tiny little game (86kb!!!!!) that "simulates" sumo wrestling.  All you do is try to shove your opponent down.  Of course, that's easier said than done.  The controls are very simple:

Down {S} - Tap the ground to start a match (You have to tap the ground at the same time as your opponenet.  Just hit down a couple of times to get it to start.)
Up {W} - Walk foward
Left and Right Arrows {A and W} - Shuffle side to side
Enter {SHIFT} - Push with one hand
Backspace {CONTROL} - Push with both hands

It has a two player mode with similar controls on the other side of the keyboard (In curly braces above).

ready.png push.png shove.png

The trick is that your wrestler moves like it has had way too much to drink.  Most rounds consist of running into your opponent, pushing once or twice, and laughing maniacally as one or both loose their balance and crash to the mat.  The first wrestler to contact the ground with something other than their feet loses.  After the round, the wrestlers try to stand up with comic results as they stumble around and fall into the walls surrounding the ring.  To win the bout, you have to win at least 5 bouts and have two more wins than your opponent.  That means you could win 5-3, or 7-5, but not 5-4.

ringout.png crash.png

There is a hidden mode that is equally as silly.  I won't spoil the fun for you, but I will give a hint: On the menu, throw blocks at everything.

The game has various graphical detail settings so you can make it run well on most computers.  You can adjust resolution, color depth, and how many shadows are visible.  I was able to get a good framerate at 800x600 32bit color with no shadows.  Keep in mind that my PC is rather old, so most will probably be able to run at higher framerates and with more shadows.

settings.png

The needs improvement section

Considering the program is so tiny, there isn't much to complain about.  Sure the music is a little odd, but it makes it all the more amusing.  The controls are a little strange and there is no way to remap them, but they get the job done and lend themselves to two players on the same keyboard.

Why I think you should use this product

It's funny.  And it's impressive at less than 100K.

How does it compare to similar apps

I don't think there are any similar apps.

Conclusions

I haven't laughed so hard in ages.  My wife of two years told me that she has never heard me laugh as hard as I did when I first started playing.  I'm sure it will get old eventually (though the two player will probably extend that), but for the laughs and the fact that it is so tiny, I have to give this full marks: 5 out of 5.

I use NTWrapper.  The free version only allows you to run one program as a service.  It has the added bonus of automatically restarting the service if it is terminated.

General Software Discussion / Re: envelope printing freeware?
« Last post by cthorpe on April 22, 2007, 03:37 PM »
Well, I found a few possibilities

Kurlo contact manager (Java) - http://www.kurlo.com/
From features list:

Print envelopes
Select from common envelope sizes or customized envelope sizes to print address lists and/or individual addresses

Quick Envelopes - http://www.ed-it.com/p_qenv.htm
From the website:

Your favorite Word Processor does envelopes!

So does QUICK EnvelopesTM! And it doesn't cost $395, you won't have to attend a two day seminar, you won't need wizard help, and you will not have to wait 3 minutes for it to load. Simply the easiest to use envelope printing you will ever use.

and finally
Envelope Wizard - http://www.freeware4...=showdown&id=118

This program will guide you through the steps, necessary for using your computer and printer for addressing an envelope. At each step along the way, you be asked to provide information for addressing the envelope. You may then proceed to the next step, if you find that you have made a mistake in a previous step, you can back up and redo it

Don't know how any of those work, but they may be what you need.

If the whole wake on lan thing doesn't work, I still think the AHK scripts I posted above could do what you need.  Set up the hibernate off to run sometime during the day that you want the machine to be on over night.  Then have the hibernate on script run sometime after you are sure that the scheduled tasks will be completed.  It results in a little more power consumption than a WOL solution, but it works.

General Software Discussion / Re: RANT: High Software Prices!
« Last post by cthorpe on April 20, 2007, 08:26 AM »
Many universities have special contracts with Microsoft (and other vendors) for substantially reduced software prices.  These aren't the Academic boxed versions that you may have seen.  These are much cheaper than that.

For example, Texas A&M Univeristy has one such contract and offers these products and more:

Windows XP Pro with SP2 - $10
Office 2003 Pro - $15
Visual Studio .Net Professional 2005 - $20 (also have 2003 and 2002 available at the same price)
SPSS - $30 (a $500+ statisitical package)
Camtasia/Snagit bundle - $20
Vista and Office 2007 will be available in May with an as yet undetermined price point

These products come only with a CD and a license code.  The CDs and code labels are authentic with ACADEMIC plastered across them.  The terms of the license say that the software cannot be transferred, and must be surrendered if the student who purchased them withdraws from school.  If the student graduates, the license becomes a perpetual full license.

I'm thinking maybe a AutoHotKey automation of opening power settings and disabling hibernate would do the trick.

These should work for Windows XP.  You may have to modify them for other flavors of windows.

Hibernate Off
WinWait, Program Manager,
IfWinNotActive, Program Manager, , WinActivate, Program Manager,
WinWaitActive, Program Manager,
Send, {LWINDOWN}r{LWINUP}
WinWait, Run,
IfWinNotActive, Run, , WinActivate, Run,
WinWaitActive, Run,
Send, powercfg.cpl{ENTER}
WinWait, Power Options Properties,
IfWinNotActive, Power Options Properties, , WinActivate, Power Options Properties,
WinWaitActive, Power Options Properties,
Send, {CTRLDOWN}{TAB}{TAB}{CTRLUP}{SPACE}{ENTER}

Hibernate On - Change the number of {UP} on the last line to adjust the hibernate time.
WinWait, Program Manager,
IfWinNotActive, Program Manager, , WinActivate, Program Manager,
WinWaitActive, Program Manager,
Send, {LWINDOWN}r{LWINUP}
WinWait, Run,
IfWinNotActive, Run, , WinActivate, Run,
WinWaitActive, Run,
Send, powercfg.cpl{ENTER}
WinWait, Power Options Properties,
IfWinNotActive, Power Options Properties, , WinActivate, Power Options Properties,
WinWaitActive, Power Options Properties,
Send, {CTRLDOWN}{TAB}{TAB}{CTRLUP}{SPACE}{ALTDOWN}a{ALTUP}{CTRLDOWN}{TAB}{TAB}{CTRLUP}{ALTDOWN}h{ALTUP}{UP}{UP}{UP}{UP}{UP}{ENTER}

You could compile those and then run them using Task Scheduler to stop the hibernation process.  The attached files should turn it off and turn it back on with a 3 hour delay.

Of course, they put that 100% banner on the software description on their site, then rarely host the file itself, so who knows what you are getting.  I only trust it if I see it on the softpedia site, and they are hosting the program on one of their servers.

Even then, I rely on my security programs to verify that it is safe.

By block row names from scrolling, do you mean that you want to be able to scroll horizontally and still see column A?  If so, the program you mentioned can do it:
http://www.byedesign.freeserve.co.uk/

Select the column to the right of where you want the freeze line and then select Format -> Freeze.  It may take a couple times clicking Freeze to actually get it to freeze:

selcol.png

free.png

freeshow.png

You can also do it by row.  Just select the row directly below where you want the freeze line:

rowselect.png

freeshowrow.png

You can't do row and column at the same time :(.

My biggest gripe with XY is its enormous amount of bugs. Probably DOpus is developed by a big team, but XY only has one developer, and sometimes the difference is noted.

Directory Opus is developed by two people.  That makes it all the more impressive.

Zaine posted this on his blog:

GPSoft only provided two minor updates to Directory Opus 8, and now they want almost 66% of the full price for an upgrade, with several options being left out of the main program unless you want to pay for them. That’s bullshit, and reason enough to claim that GPSoft is hostile to its current paying customers.

What qualifies as a minor update?  There were multiple minor updates since 8.0.  The amount of updates and fixes from 8.1.0.8 alone takes 35 pages to list.  And don't forget that the move up to 8.2 was a significant update.

http://www.gpsoft.co...s%2082%20Changes.pdf

Yes, I would love to see free updates for all customers, or at least a year of update protection, but the software is excellent, and bugfixes and new features are released more often than the blog mentioned above gives credit for.

Also, as Darwin said, DO8 will continue to work.  It is extreamly powerful, and those minor updates I mentioned took care of a lot of bugs.  If you don't want to pay for the upgrade, stick with version 8.  It's not like an anti-virus program that will fail as soon as you fail to update it.

Good Lord... I just got home and looked over that preview... Even if I wasn't entitled to a free upgrade, I'd get it anyway.  Most of the new features look great.

Wow!  Did you guys check out nudel's preview of the new v9?  It's freakin amazing.  Expensive or not, this program is crazy!

I'm at work, and I can't view that preview because the address has nude in it.  The filter here blocks it as containing pornographic content.

It looks like he is talking about SSM as an anti-malware program rather than a firewall.

General Software Discussion / Re: System Safety Monitor
« Last post by cthorpe on April 12, 2007, 10:16 AM »
I have the pay version of SSM, and I find it to be fairly powerful as far as controlling applications and processes.  It can be noisy at first, but it calms down considerably after a week or two of heavy use.  The current version cuts down on some of the chatter by giving you options such as an "install mode" that automatically allows all of the processes spawned by an installer to run without intervention.

I don't use the firewall, but as far as I recall, it only handles outbound traffic, and does so in a very simplistic manner.  If you're behind a router, and just want to allow or deny programs from getting out, it might do what you want.  If you need inbound protection or want to use more complex rules, then it might disappoint.

Awesome!  I purchased DO in January, so I get the free upgrade.  Keep in mind when thinking about the upgrade policy that version 8 was available since 2005 with regular point updates.  Those point updates were free.  So yes you have to pay for major upgrades, but those don't come very often.

Having said that, I do think there should be a little more of a grace period for the free upgrade.

I've had two logitech mice crap out on my in the past year.  On both of them, the middle button (scroll wheel) started intermittently double-clicking (and sometimes even triple clicking) whenever I would click it once.  This makes browsing a pain as middle clicking a link to open it in a tab sometimes causes two or more identical tabs to open.  The one I have right now is a MX310.  Sorry I don't remmeber what the other one was.

I suggest posting a screen grab of what you want to eliminate. (Be sure to crop it down to just the area concerned.) That will go a long way in helping us help you.

I think the original poster is wanting to disable these:

tooltips.png

Here's a little application at the "Code Project" that will eliminate tooltips by using a system wide hook.
You'll have to create a free account to download it.
Once installed go the folder it's installed in and run the program.
KillTT: No More Tooltips!

Apparently tested on WinXP.
-Cpilot

That seems to do the trick.  Not sure if there are any negative effects, but it does get rid of the tooltips.

Edit: forget the attachment  :-\

Had a very slow day at work today, so I've been looking for an answer to this for awhile.  So far, it looks like it may not be possible.  In fact, I've come across quite a few instances of people asking for the same thing, and the general consensus each time is that it can't be done.
