General Software Discussion / Re: General brainstorming for Note-taking software
« Last post by Rover on March 15, 2006, 10:56 AM »
By the way, can someone please explain what the big deal about Ecco Pro is?  I understand that it was an awesome program back in the day, but is it still all that awesome even with our modern expectations?

I've tried it many times, and I'm always left wondering what's so great about it.  Yeah, it's outlining is nice, but the whole thing is so old fashioned, I can't get over it.
Here lies one of the big problems in UI programming.  Ecco Pro is an example of Functionality over Form.  The foks who still use and swear by Ecco don't want or need eye candy; they want to get a job done.  More than that, Ecco works in a way that they relate to very well.  It makes sense to them.  (You can substitue any old Loved app here.  Word Perfect is a good example).

A lot of bad software starts with the phrase, "Wouldn't it be cool if..."
A lot of really great software starts the same way.  The tricky bit is that the great software also has a good answer to "Why would that be cool?"

So, what are your "modern expectations?"  That it do something really well and solve your problem or that it look like puffed candy and have more features than you'll ever use?  Or something in between?   :D

[Personal Opinion/Future Prediction]
Vista will be the last big OS release.  Web services are maturing to the point where the OS will eventually (the sooner the better) be irrelivant.
[End Opinion/Prediction]
There are still people using Windoze 98.  As long as drivers are available and the software they want/need runs, who cares about the OS anyway?

So no, I won't be switching to Vista soon.  I'd rather switch to Linux....

Well if you're going to count fun all bets are off  ;D

I was actually thinking from a business perspective, but you make a great point.  A CMS is a really good way to learn and it has a lot of "programmer feel good" which makes it fun.  Sort of like software development stage 1 where a programmer has a problem then writes a tool to help.  It's cool when you see your tedious workload reduced by something you've written.

While I am a fan or roll-your-own software, there are some times when it doesn't make a lot of sense.  CMS is one of those.  There are so many open source options that you should be able to find a really close fit and modify it.  See http://www.opensourcecms.org for long list with links and demos of everything.

Don't know if this will solve the original problem, but it is a file description/notes application....
FileNote is a little shell extension that allows you to add textual descriptions to your files. It adds one command to the shell context menu of a file object. This command lets you easily edit or create a text file that has the same name as the initial file, but with the extension TXT.

My personal favorite is Cute PDF http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp

It works just like any other printer.  Uses Ghostscript and creates nice normal PDF Files with no watermarks, nags or anything.

For doing things like including or excluding pages from PDF files, I bought PDF995.  You can also sign PDF files with the PDF 995 suite.

mouser- I agree, micro payments will become effective and useful.  I don't think this will happen until the 'net is completely reworked and made private.  The 'Net company will be the one to moderate the micro payments.

Hey GotMilk? -   Welcome to the site.

So what am I doing wrong?  I'm just 40+ and been in the 'puter biz 20+ years and I didn't get to retire yet.  Wah!

Enjoy the wife thing.

I am 22 years old, and originate from the Boise, Idaho, USA. I came to this site a time or two on the suggestion of fellow member Allen. We've been online buddies for several years now.

Well if you're OK by Allen ... you're OK by me.  Don't have beard do you?

Anyway welcome.

Does it have to be FTP?  This sounds like a job for rsync.  http://www.samba.org/rsync/

Do you know what version of Groupwise you are using?  It sounds like a lot of your problems are related to how it is administered, will that change with a new mail system?

I use groupwise at one of my client sites and it's not bad.  I'm not using it heavily tho.

Kerio makes a mail server that contains a lot of outlook features in a web based system.  You can also add an adapter to allow Outlook clients to use the system just as if it were Exchange.

So many options! :)

Interesting read.... I've never been a big fan of C++ and didn't know why.  I'm not sure the article contains the reason, but at least it gives me an excuse.  ;)

I've been debating over Ruby vs. Python for a little while.  I'm still not sure where I want to jump next, but I do agree with 1 big statement in the article: "OOP SUCKS!"

 ;D  What a joke.

If you're really scared consider:
There is no OS in the universe that would be reliable enough to relate all of the obscure data found in that simple flash.
The Take Action link was the best part... takes you to a 404 page on aclu.org.  They're the ones who would try to set something like this up. :o  (did I say that outloud?)

I had BeOS installed for a while and it was pretty cool.  Too bad it went the way of OS/2.
