You could always ask the developer directly , mentioning this one year anniversary, and it might just work...

General Software Discussion / Re: Good parental control software
« Last post by MerleOne on January 15, 2010, 06:28 AM »
K9, a parental control software, is a solution I have not used myself, but for which I have read good reviews.

URL : http://www.k9webprotection.com/

I think it's still free free but you will have to check !

Umberto, you could keep the main program installer-free but add a "add explorer right-click integration" menu option or similar?

If you do this, also add "Remove explorer right-click integration" menu option.  I once came across a small app that wouldn't remove this menu item even after uninstall and it was never fixed (AFAIK).

General Software Discussion / Re: Comodo Time Machine - who's going to try it ?
« Last post by MerleOne on January 14, 2010, 03:05 AM »
Actually, Shadow Defender is NOT a backup or an imaging tool : it's a software like Returnil or Microsoft Steady State : you can activate it, perform some tasks like installing and testing some software, driver update, etc.  At reboot, all changes are lost as if you never performed these tasks.  But if your HDD gets physically damaged, you will not be able to do anything without a real backup or image.

Yes, AJC is excellent, but only for data files.

I'll wait also...

For the moment I am relying on Image for Windows as partition/drive imaging tool and the excellent shadow defender, which is what returnil should have been : light, efficient, problemless  AFAIK.  It's far from the features of a real time machine, but using both covers most of my needs.

I keep using Drive Clone Pro 6 on a Vista system that was difficult to setup, but that's just the exception.

General Software Discussion / Re: At last: MP3 Lossless!!!

Maybe a bit off topic but I'd like to share this with you all : I recently had a go at Jetaudio Plus because it was on sale and I wanted to get it since a long time ago.  I was interested in the mp3 sound management by Cowon, which I find outstanding, something called BBE.  See http://www.bbesound....BE_MP_WhitePaper.pdf for those who are interested.

But actually I was favorably surprised by another point, the mp3 encoder.  I used to rely on EasyCDDA, encoding my CD @ 192 kbps ABR.  With Jetaudio Plus I chose 192 kbps VBR and I was astonished by the difference (on the same Sony Walkman, a NWZ-S738F).  The music seems "clearer", "richer" than with EasyCDDA with a similar compression level.

I don't know if the basic version of JetAudio (free) has the same mp3 encoding capabilities, but I can now highly recommend it if it's there.

Thanks !  It is incredible !

Oh SNAP!  My bad...false alarm!  Everything is fine.  I forgot where I moved the files.  I was thinking it was in one directory and they were in another.  Sorry everyone for freaking out.  Thanks for the help, I appreciate it. :-[

I think you may be ready for "Search Everything", a free search tool that indexes all your online HDD and quickly find where files are.  Go to www. voidtools.com

[I think this works fine for NTFS partitions only ?]

General Software Discussion / Re: ShadowProtect Desktop or Macrium Reflect?
« Last post by MerleOne on December 29, 2009, 02:39 PM »
If you ware saving your system partition, such a size for a differential backup is quite normal nowadays, since Windows is always creating lots of files for just about anything.

I have noticed something about shadow protect : you can desactivate the license on a given computer.  It would be nice to know if you can then activate it on another one without limits, so you might protect several machines one at a time (according to what the license permits).  With Macrium, I am not aware of such a mechanism : once activated, it probably remains so.  Macrium user may share their experience on this ?

I understand, then why not have both, and maybe user-selectable for those who want to keep the current display.

The thread "finding my bookmarks for the forum" is followed by a small <new> while I think it would be quicker to see that it is new by having it in bold.

Thanks all for these suggestions, scripts and alternate readers, but my initial remark was related to a modification that would work for all browsers with no add-on.

My question would actually better be split into two :
1/ do you agree it improves readability ?
2/ can it be done, at server lever ?

And would the admin(s) do it ?

1/ There is is "slim" build downloadable without the Ask adware
2/ There is also a portable version without this adware
3/ That's probably a small price to pay for having free software, the main question being here: is it worth it ?

My point is just that sometimes you realise you've used the read-on feature too soon !   And you are also just proving my point :) by saying "I'm having a hard time imagining how you could both accidentally edit a document, AND accidentally save the document afterward".  If so, there is no obstacle making it R/W again since you won't erase the read-only version unintentionally.

I think TuneUp 2009 is still OK.

It's fine, but it refuses to install on Windows 7. Only 2010 will install.

http://www.glaryutilities.com/gu.html seems Win7 OK.  I think I tried it once but was not that impressed.

I think there is something close, GlaryUtilities, still free (checked a few weeks ago) and seems quite similar.  Or you may try to get the Xmas Giveaway for TuneUp2009 floating here and there.

Regarding Win7, the system imaging is a very nice addition, but I think it doesn't support incremental or differential imaging, so it's almost useless IMHO.  Regarding Macrium vs ShadowProtect, I find that Macrium is the most impressive in terms of speed, and differential backups are incredibly quick, whereas with SD, duration of a full backup = duration of any differential backup.

I don't know if Macrium has a refund policy, if yes, you don't risk that much by buying the real product and ask a refund if it doesn't work with your setup.

About the +R attribute, I thought at first it was equivalent to the 'read-only' feature and was looking for this attribute to be set (I never read the manual!).

Lifting the 'read-only' atttribute makes sense when you want to update the content of a note easily but not inadvertedly.  If fsekrit could ask for the password when doing it, it would avoid accidental change of the note content and still give some flexibility ?

Regarding hide/unhide password , I understand the temptation for erasing but it would only enhance security in a not indispensable way.  If you're in an "open" environnement, with some eyes behind you, you just don't leave your PC and don't unhide the password.  I would keep the two input zones, without erasing, but simply unhidden.  This would solve the important problem of Caps lock or numlock being activated and a different password being typed than the one you want, especially if you also remove copy/paste.
