Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Babylon discount
« Last post by cyberdiva on July 30, 2011, 03:49 PM »
-because of you I have now upgraded to Firefox 5, but
on my computer, Babylon 9 doesn't work with FF 4 or 5.

Curt, I asked the question simply because cacoder seemed to indicate that his copy of Babylon 9 does work on Firefox 5.  As you know, I have Babylon 6 and have no way to know first-hand how later versions perform.   :(

Curt, what you and cacoder have said convinces me to stay with Babylon 6.  I'm wondering, though, about your statement re version 9 not supporting Firefox 4.  Perhaps I missed it, but is there a reason you don't just move to Firefox 5?

I haven't been able to find out anything about the second one you list, but the first one, KB2507938, has been on Windows Secrets' Install list since mid-July.  Hope that helps.

General Software Discussion / Re: ClipMate developer has returned
« Last post by cyberdiva on July 28, 2011, 08:39 AM »
Shortly after I posted about Chris Thornton's offering no explanation for his rather long absence from the ClipMate forum, he did post a short explanation.  Apparently he also has a real life.  :)  I wouldn't have guessed, seeing how many messages he usually responded to each day on the forum.  BTW, in the same message, he also mentioned that he has made "significant progress" on a 64-bit ClipBar and hopes to roll it out this fall.

I agree, Jim, that Chris's responses can be rather short and prickly, but when I've sent a message about a problem or even just a question, he has usually answered it promptly and usefully.

Curt, I've never run the security suite, but for quite a while I did use the Outpost Pro firewall, and it co-existed very nicely with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro (MBAM).  I don't recall whether I had an option to have the firewall do the anti-malware part.  If I did, I'm sure I told it not to do so, since I already had MBAM and was very happy with it.

I recall that I had to put exclusions in my AV program so it wouldn't conflict with MBAM, and I may have put exclusions in MBAM to ignore the AV program.  I just don't remember.  I can say that I don't remember running into any problem with MBAM Pro and any firewall or AV program.

With my relatively new computer running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, I've decided to go with the built-in Windows firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials, along with MBAM and WinPatrol PLUS.  Again, I've added some exclusions in MSE to ignore MBAM and vice versa.  So far, no problems (knock on wood, salt over my shoulder  :D ).

Hi, Curt.  Yes, it sounds as if you have good reason to brag.  However, I should point out that I also find Lazarus invaluable when I try to post comments on a couple of blogs I like.  Sometimes the comment goes through just fine, but at other times I get some kind of service error message, and everything I wrote is gone.  Going back to where I was simply brings me back to a blank entry form.  And then there are the times Lazarus saves me from myself, such as when I unintentionally hit the wrong button and move off the page on which I was writing.  I find I have an embarrassing number of uses for Lazarus.  :-[

Living Room / Re: software trials
« Last post by cyberdiva on July 25, 2011, 08:03 AM »
Though I use a lot of freeware, I also buy a lot of programs, and sometimes I upgrade from the freeware to the paid version (which in some cases is the point of offering a free version).  When I buy software, the usual free trial is for 30 days.  Occasionally, it's only for 15 days, though offhand I don't remember which ones are so short.  Some programs offer a more generous 60-day trial, and occasionally they make it clear that if you need even more time, you can request more.  Among the programs I have that offer a 60-day trial period are ActiveWords and Directory Opus.  I think I may have others, but those are the two I recall offhand.

I agree that it's not always easy to find the update information you need from Windows Secrets, especially if you're trying to find it after a while rather than at the time the updates were first issued.  But perhaps if you post the KB numbers of the updates you've got questions about, some of the folks here might be able to provide help.

509
Nosh, in the options, there's a place where you can tell Lazarus to save stuff for a given number (that you choose) of seconds/minutes/days/weeks.  Again, you choose.  I've currently got mine set for four days, though at times in the past I've set it for as long as a week and as short as two days.

Far and away my favorite Firefox extension is Lazarus. I can't tell you how often I've been typing something (a blog, a request for tech support, a forum message, email, etc.) when suddenly I lose my connection, or I submit the message and it disappears into thin air.  Thanks to Lazarus, I no longer worry, at least not if I'm in Firefox: I simply click on the tiny Lazarus icon at the bottom of my Firefox screen, find whatever I was writing safely stored in its entirety, and retrieve it.  Lazarus stores all entries for an adjustable amount of time, so I can go back and find something I typed a couple of days ago or even last week. Lazarus has saved my bacon many times; I've been so grateful that I've donated money to the developer as a way to thank him for this terrific free add-on. I should note that Lazarus is now also available in a beta version for the Chrome browser.

Found Deals and Discounts / SoftMaker Office 2010 20% off until July 31
« Last post by cyberdiva on July 24, 2011, 08:23 AM »
SoftMaker, a German company that makes an excellent, lower-priced alternative to Microsoft Office, is offering a 20% discount on SoftMaker Office 2010 (versions for Windows and for Linux) through the end of July.  Normally, SoftMaker Office sells for $79.95, but through the end of July the price is $63.95.  The 20% discount is actually on all SoftMaker's products, which I think includes upgrades.  Thus, if you've taken advantage of the opportunity to get SoftMaker Office 2008 (currently offered for free!), you can upgrade to the current version for $31.95.

If you are a teacher or student, you can qualify for SoftMaker's academic pricing--SoftMaker Office 2010 is available to teachers and students for $34.95 or €29.95.  I'm not sure, but I think the 20% discount may even apply to this price.

I've been using SoftMaker Office (primarily TextMaker, their alternative to MS Word) for a while now, and I'm very pleased.  I was never all that proficient with MS Office, so I probably can't describe the differences between MS and SoftMaker--except for the price  :) .  I can say that I went the route I describe above, first getting the 2008 version for free and then a while later taking advantage of a sale to upgrade to SoftMaker Office 2010 at a reduced price.  I did so because the 2010 version handles .docx files, whereas I think the 2008 version does not.  I find I can make and read and edit MS Office files very well in SoftMaker Office.

If my 17.x did not upgrade to 20.5 nicely (maybe I have a lifetime license, courtesy of Bill P) I would have immediately upgraded on the special.
-Steven Avery (July 23, 2011, 09:32 PM)

Steven, I think that the PLUS version comes with a lifetime license.  I've upgraded WinPatrol PLUS many times over the years, and I've never been asked to pay anything for the upgrades.

I get confused when I read all these "the first program I install on a new pc"-praises, because I will automatically ask (myself) if they don't have proper security programs. I believe that various security suites are promising to handle the exact same items that WP+ is handling, and then some. Or am I not seeing an important difference?

Hi, Curt.  Please note that I said WinPatrol PLUS was ONE of the first programs I put on any computer, not THE first.  Indeed, the first programs I put on any computer are an anti-virus program and a firewall.  After that, WP PLUS and Malwarebytes Pro.   I use Malwarebytes Pro because it is designed to pick up baddies that many of the AV programs miss.  And WP PLUS too performs services that neither my AV nor my firewall offer or perform as well.

I too have a key for WP+, but don't have the progam installed. If you care to, please tell what good I can use WinPatrol+ for, when I already have Outpost Security Suite (and AnVir Task Manager Pro and Chameleon Startup Manager) running? I am not sure if I even can have them running at the same time.
 :tellme:
-Curt

MilesAhead has already noted two of the features I like about WP.  One is the warning it provides any time a program tries to put itself into the startup menu, or tries to add a service, a BHO, or whatever.  Sometimes I'm perfectly happy to let the program do so, but often I say NO, I don't want that, and WinPatrol will prevent it from doing so.  I'm astonished at the number of programs that put themselves into the startup menu without asking.  In the majority of cases, it's absolutely unnecessary that the program start when Windows does.  IIRC, AnVir Task Manager does this too, but I prefer WinPatrol.  Though there were things I liked about AnVir, I eventually stopped using it, in part because some of the assessments it offered about the safety of specific programs were way off base.

Also like MilesAhead, I have used WP to put things in the delayed start menu.  I know that there are other ways to do this, but WP makes it very easy and provides a good deal of flexibility about how much of a delay there should be.

Another thing that I like about WinPatrol PLUS is that if I see a program or service that I don't know running on my machine, I can seek information about it by clicking on WP's PLUS button.  Sometimes the program is not in WP's database, but often it is, and WP will tell me what the program is, what it does, whether it's needed, whether it's safe to leave on the computer, etc.  I think the PLUS version offers considerably more extensive information than the free version.

Found Deals and Discounts / WinPatrol PLUS: 50% off today at Bits du Jour
« Last post by cyberdiva on July 23, 2011, 08:33 AM »
From the description: "WinPatrol PLUS provides an ironclad level of protection from unwanted system changes and malware installations. WinPatrol PLUS maintains constant vigilance over your computer, inspecting system resources, startup processes, background programs, browser toolbars and cookies with a critical eye."

I've used WinPatrol PLUS for many years.  It's one of the first programs I install on any new computer.  I'm under the impression that once you buy it, you have a lifetime license--certainly I've never paid for an upgrade in all the years I've used it.  The Bits du Jour offer can be found here:
http://www.bitsdujour.com/software/winpatrol-plus/.  I think the offer is good only today, Saturday, July 23, 2011.

Why not run an XP VM and run your Dreamweaver in there?
-Carol Haynes (July 21, 2011, 05:06 AM)

Thanks for the suggestion, Carol, but I haven't found any serious problems running my version of Dreamweaver on Win 7 64-bit.  I expected to have problems with lots of programs, since I have some dating back to the 1990s.  But so far, I think the only thing I couldn't run was a program related to my Canon SD1000 camera that shows me what's on my camera's memory card and allows me to transfer the files I want to my hard drive.  But I can get all the information I need just by going to My Computer and looking at the listings for my camera's memory card.  So I don't see any compelling reason to install an XP VM.  I might add that I'd like to keep this computer as lean as possible (a challenge, since I'm a software nut  :) ).

Thanks, Shades, for the suggestion.  However, at the moment I consider clicking on the UAC prompt a minor annoyance and thus not worth trying to circumvent via virtualization, Registry changes, or other efforts.  I'm really pleased to know that these possibilities exist, but I don't think I'll pursue them for something as minor as having to click on a UAC prompt.

As soon as you click "yes" on an UAC prompt, the application that's prompting is granted administrative privileges.

Ah, I see.  Thanks.

It might be worth a shot to give yourself permission to the Dreamweaver registry keys (HKLM/Software/[author]/Dreamweaver/...)to get UAC to hush when it loads.

Thanks, Stoic Joker, for this interesting suggestion.  However, I try to limit messing with the Registry to times when I really have to.  Since I've more or less gotten used to UAC's "do you want to use this?" stupidity, I'm probably best off leaving well enough alone.  But I do plan to bookmark your suggestion in case my patience starts to wear thin.  :)

Aaaah, there you've got your problem, then - DW have been running with administrative privileges all the time, which is why AW couldn't control it until you ran that with administrative privileges as well.

I'm not sure I follow you.  Why do you say that DW has been running with administrative privileges all the time?

Yes, I agree, DW is something of a monster, but it's the monster I know  :) .  It was bought for me at work some years ago, and I've used it ever since.  I suspect that if it were to go belly up, I wouldn't shell out the big bucks to replace it, but as long as it works, I'm happy with it.

Hey, thanks very much, f0dder, you're right!  After reading your message, I removed the "run as administrator" checkmark from Dreamweaver and then tried to see whether ActiveWords would still work with it.  It does.  I should add, however, that with or without the elevated status, Dreamweaver still gets challenged by UAC every time I start it.

I've never used Image Doctor, so I can't answer your question.  I do own InPaint and like it a lot.  Also, there was a review a few months ago by the Neat Net Tricks Software Review Panel, so you can get five users' views.

General Software Discussion / ClipMate developer has returned

Good news for users of the excellent clipboard manager ClipMate.  The developer, Chris Thornton, who normally responds to many messages every day on the forum, suddenly disappeared a month or so ago.  Having an active imagination of disaster, I feared the worst.  But today he reappeared on the forum, responding to a number of requests for help.   No explanation about his long absence.

Thanks, justice.  I think WinPatrol PLUS is set to warn me about attempts to change my HOSTS file and some critical System files, so even without UAC, I've got some protection.  However, as I've reported in an earlier message, I finally did get the two programs to run as administrator and work together.

Thanks for the suggestion about running both prompts together, but I don't really object to OK'ing each one separately.  What made me turn off UAC was the need to re-set the UAC and reboot each time I wanted to use Dreamweaver and ActiveWords together.  Now that that's no longer a problem, I've got UAC back on.
