Living Room / Re: Are We Addicted to "NEW"?
« Last post by Josh on April 11, 2012, 01:45 AM »
Let me give you my perception of this issue.

As a user, I evaluate programs based on a few categories such as functionality, ease of use, serving the intended function, and supportability (is that a word?). One of the key factors behind supportability is whether or not the author is actively involved in the project. I do not require updates for a program, but a lack of updates gets me worried since it could indicate a lack of support should an issue arise.

Let's say I invest 80 dollars into a productivity tool. After using it for a few months, I notice that a bug occurs when I perform steps X, Y and Z. Now, I go to obtain support and hopefully a patch. This is when I find out the author no longer supports the product or has just given up on it. In my eyes, an update, even if only to post to the homepage every few weeks, shows that the product is still alive.

No software is perfect, and there are ALWAYS bugs to fix. Updates do not necessarily have to mean new features, but it could reflect additional bug fixes. This level of support is more preferred, in my eyes, than posting updates to an application by adding features just for the sake of adding them. Do we really need a spell checker in an application launcher and does a book collection manager really require a DVD ripper?

In the end, updates are a good thing if done for the right reasons. Adding features, just because, is the wrong way to go about it. Keep up with maintenance and patching of an application and add features as your users show a genuine interest for them, or as capability gaps are identified.

I could not sit there all day talking to my stupid PC - I shall stick with typing until I can connect something directly to my brain. And imagine trying to work alongside someone else!

Plus I always have music on. How is one going to compile
public never static void going to main(String[] give you) { up SwingUtilities.never going to .invokeAndWait(new Runnable() etc. etc.

Personally, I think the future will be sensors that track the nerve impulses that go to the fingers. So you think about typing, and the words appear.

Wait...I was just rick rolled! Well played!

General Software Discussion / Good Multi-account (GMAIL included) email notifier
« Last post by Josh on March 24, 2012, 05:42 PM »
OK, this is probably already covered on the forums, but I did not find a topic. What is a good email checker/notifier for Windows that supports multiple accounts, IMAP IDLE (Push mail), IMAP folders, and gmail? Was looking at pop peeper, but they want extra for the ability to look at items sent through the program (WTF?!?!).

I also checked tech support alert but could not find a listing of various programs.

Thoughts?

Living Room / Re: Windows 8 is just a Service/crapware pack for Windows 7
« Last post by Josh on March 23, 2012, 04:33 PM »
I am with Innuendo. I've had no doubt that MS will NOT make Metro the default UI for all computer systems. It just would not make sense.

Also, Windows 7 is far more than just a "service pack" to Windows Vista. Like Innuendo, I feel anyone who makes claims otherwise has not messed with Windows 7 for more than a few days.

Figured that since we had a firefox thread for this subject, I would like to see one for chrome since that is my browser of choice.

What are your thoughts?

OK, we all have, or will have, the need to plan for the inevitable. Part of this planning is ensuring that you have your important documents in order. With digital signatures now considered to be valid like a physical ink signature, I am wanting to find a service which can produce major documents such as wills, notarized original documents, powers of attorney, etc and store them in a digital file. This is intended to be used in the US as that is where I reside.

Ideally, I will be able to generate these documents digitally, sign them, and store them in a service which will make access easier for my loved ones in the event of the unfortunate.

Does anyone know of a service such as this which offers these types of services?

Living Room / Re: When are modern Terms of Service going to change?
« Last post by Josh on March 18, 2012, 08:10 PM »
I will agree there. Much of these long TOS "contracts" are due to the overly litigious society we live in. I would love to see them shortened, regardless. I think something like the "truth in lending", from the financial industry, page could easily be setup while leaving the current TOS in place. This would provide a summary of KEY components of the terms of service to alleviate the need to read over the 32 page TOS to find the two words they changed to cover some new base.

Don't get me wrong. I understand that by clicking "I agree", I am "bound" to these terms. However, I really feel these TOS and privacy policies would never hold up if they were ever put to the test. I am all for reading what I've signed, but I really feel these things leave a lot in terms of user-friendliness.

Again, like 4wd, I am reminded of the "Human centiPad" episode of south park where Kyle agrees to be "surgically altered" because of his agreement to the iTunes TOS.

Living Room / When are modern Terms of Service going to change?
« Last post by Josh on March 17, 2012, 02:43 PM »
I have been wondering this for a while. Many of the privacy policies, terms of service, usage policies, etc. are all painful to read. With the frequency that many of these are updated, one could read a new one every day with the amount of updates to these things. I would love to see some legislation passed that makes it a requirement to produce a SHORT, easy to read/understand, version of these items in order to alleviate the "click through" nature of these documents. Has one of these ever been used in a court case? I mean, I would fail to see how they could be upheld, if it were, since everyone just clicks accept to these things since they are so long.

What are your thoughts?

Personally, I bought and use (on a regular basis) FastStone capture. I was turned on to this tool when I was on a temporary assignment with the US Military and fell in love with just how simple it is to use. Plus, $20 for lifetime updates....can't beat that!

Mouser has this enabled in the very beginning of doco and I pointed it out to him. This is a common vulnerability left open by inexperienced apache admins.

You have to edit boot.ini to remove that entry.
