I wish it had succeeded in '92, we could be beyond all this non-standard silliness of present browsers...

Well, at least I don't have to feel bad anymore when I can't solve one of those.

I recommend Drupal, which, while being complex, let's you anticipate and plan for growth of the website.

Drupal is not easy. I use it myself and keep recommending it :)

So when I want to contribute to the fundraiser I only have to send my Donation Credits to the site fund?
505
That sound like it could get off some weight of the sysadmins because they wont have to maintain this infrastructure anymore.

506
well it's spelled "Abendessen" anyway ;)

there is no ß after a short vowel: "Straße" (long a) but "Stress" (short "e")

Anyway thank you for taking your time to report this issue

Oh wow that is a good essay!

I very much like this idea about dilution:
a site aiming at a particular subset of users has to attract just those—and just as importantly, repel everyone else

I think we have managed that quite well on DC.

A couple weeks ago I tried displaying the names of users with the highest average comment scores in orange. That was a mistake. Suddenly a culture that had been more or less united was divided into haves and have-nots. I didn't realize how united the culture had been till I saw it divided. It was painful to watch.

I think this was mentioned by app103 before in another thread. It is a very important point, especially in contrast with the quote above about consciously repelling people: As a member of DC I don't want other members to be superior or inferior; we are all special in that we came here of our own free will hoping to achieve different things together. At the same time, I do not see DC as a place for everyone: we certainly are not a place to ask for software to be cracked for example.

I want my DC to keep being special, and I want my fellow users to keep being special individuals that have somehow managed to not ruin this place. In fact it has become "better".

So, while DC might not be as specialized as HN, we still managed to grow immensly and to "survive" that growth. Here's to my special place on the internet  :-*

They won't so much TAKE it anywhere as they will simply PUSH it everywhere possible. This is what big corps do.

The code for analyzing and ranking has become self-aware, and shut out Google's engineers until they have a pagerank of 1 gogoolplex...

This makes me rethink the SEO "strategy" I was using before on my site. Maybe I should just stop that nonsense and concentrate on content rather than ranking. Or make stuff easier to find for a human user than a bot...

Yes I like that thought :)

Which is why I prohibit Apple products from appearing in my household - with success I must add.

If you open an account on wikipedia, you can enable one of the many user styles people have created for mediawiki.

Somewhere under "My Preferences"... I can't say more because I no longer have an account at wikipedia.

February has always seemed like a bit of a rip-off

According to Garfield, February is "the Monday of the months", and you know how Garfield loves Mondays :)

no GPG

oh I didn't even look that far. That is another showstopper to be sure.

However, I still hope they get a Linux version done and will support encryption. Just so there is stronger competition on the "market for free email programs" :)

I would love to have easier bullet listing! On my website I use textile which does that and a lot more...

However, I have no idea how to make it work with SMF and BBCode

Yesterday I learned about rikaichan, an extension for firefox. It seems to work well enough: my Japanese skills are not good enough to tell ;)

And if those symbols were Chinese it just proves I don't know enough about either language...

Developer's Corner / Re: Web Page Layout Debate: Tables vs. CSS

I have an advantage over mouser: I do not care if a page works in IE. Therefore I can use css as much as I want for layout :)

Oh yeah: and we also use it at our club: all members automatically have a jabber account :)

openfire has been remarkably stable; our admax (that's how we call our admins) are very happy with it.

If you want easier configuration I would suggest openfire which is a jabber server. Jabber has group chats/conference rooms.

General Software Discussion / Re: How much trouble is a 64-bit OS right now?
« Last post by housetier on February 03, 2009, 07:00 PM »
Here is a FAQ that also covers Flash in 64 bit, so it would seem there IS indeed a 64 bit version.

In general, I had no problems using a 64bit linux; for greater stability I used a 32bit firefox, because the 64bit version of flash is not very stable atm. Firefox in 32bit runs very well on my 64bit system.

I only recently became aware I was using a 32bit firefox before, because my self compiled version is of course in 64bit where the 32bit flash plugin no longer loads.

(bloody flash)
