Unfortunately there already is something at SkyDisc.com and they will complain.

How about SkyCD?

I'm not sure if anyone is familiar with Powershell, but it might be something to look at for some people. Also see Wikipedia here.

If you want massive amounts of power, that can do it for you.

PowerShell (once known as Monad) is not in the same category as a console window enhancement/replacement. It is a complete replacement for any of Microsoft's DOS or Windows command line interpreters. It is a full fledged object oriented system administration scripting language.

I have been telling every junior Windows system administrator I like that they should be learning PowerShell as fast as they can if they want to move up to a senior Windows sysadmin position. With PowerShell knowledge you would run circles around any sysadmin that works predominantly from through the GUI, as well as be able to get Windows to do things that you just can't do through a GUI alone.

SkyIDE,

I am sure you would get a much better response from a wider audience. I suggest hosting this project on SourceForge.net and submitting your info to sites like DistroWatch.com and The LiveCD List.

I would also hope that you don't get discouraged by what will surely be a slow uptake of your distribution. Things take time to get noticed and for word to spread. It may take months for your distro to get moving. It is just part of the huge world of the intertubes. I think the best way to get people interested is to do a mini public relations/marketing campaign to get the word out and then be very helpful on the SourceForge message forums for your distro.

Let us know if/when you get it uploaded to SourceForge and I will take a look at it.

Good Luck

JGPaiva's GridMove and Ahk Tools / Re: Gridmove Source Code

It is a 7-zip archive that is improperly named. Just change it from GridMove.zip to GridMove.7z and you will be good to go.

Demo shows that Direct Folders replaces the Explorer context menu. Not much of an advantage...
-gogogadgetscott (March 20, 2008, 11:41 PM)

I think you may have misinterpreted the demo (which I am sure the developer would like to know). It doesn't replace the context menu. Your context menu is unaltered by Direct Folders. What it provides, at its core, is a way to get to your most used directories quickly. There are plenty of other benefits as well. I would suggest, especially since it is free for home use, that you try it yourself.

That distance, unobstructed, will be perfect quality. Stick some metal and electrical wiring and you might get some interference.

btw, correct me if i'm wrong but Slingbox seems to the other way around - TV to PC.

They have the SlingCatcher with makes it bi-directional.

How far is the TV from the computer? I had one of these and they worked great.

If you have a TiVo, get a wireless setup and run the server software on your PC. If you don't, get a Slingbox. Many of my friends have either setup and like it.

"Bootable game OS" for PCs wouldn't make sense, really... console's strength lies in uniform hardware and very capable CPU/GPUs.

Agreed. However, there is one case where it would make sense. When you don't need all the fancy accelerated stuff. For example children's games. I can see an excellent case for having a bootable DVD, linux kernel, wine, and tons of games for kids. You could have one option to load the whole OS into RAM so you can eject that DVD and insert a game CD/DVD. A second option would take advantage of an attached secondary optical drive for the game. Make it open source and unleash it on the edutainment industry.

Those of us who have purchased Direct Folders are happy to see a well needed update to 3.3. Hopefully it will bring it some greater stability.

The product has been altered slightly with a lighter version offered free for home use. Users, like myself, that have purchased an earlier version of Direct Folders 3.x can email them for a key to the pro version.

Redundancy. That's all you need. Any system admin worth their salt already knows there are best practices to this. All it takes is people, time, and money. Hence the reason it's not always feasible. But it is *technically* trivial to do.

DNS: You have round robin to multiple servers.
Physical Servers: logical, physical, and geographical separation of mirrored boxes.
Application and Database servers: clustered and separated as with physical servers.
Backups: As often as are required to appropriate media.

etc.

In other words, it is *easier* to make sure DC doesn't go down, then it is to build and coordinate a completely separate and parallel system.

tin: newsgroups are very different from forums, even though a decent newsreader will make them somewhat similar. But still, the conversational tone on usenet tends to be very different from what we have achieved here.

f0dder, you ignorant slut. [1]  :P

You are missing the whoooooole point. I am just pointing out that the technical means are already in existence. The fact that most humans are jerks that can't stay on topic and is not an issue here.

For example, if there was alt.donationcoder, and the only ones posting there were the same 100,000 that posted here, we would have continued on the conversation without a hiccup.

[1] Saturday Night Live skit we are discussing in parallel on IRC. Search this page for "you ignorant slut". This was on US television for years, so I will use that as a barometer of acceptable public language.

BTW, it already exists. In fact, it existed since pretty much the beginning of Internet time. It is a distributed system of messaging that has no central point of failure. It is called newsgroups. It appears some of you have forgotten your alt.internet.history.

Brandon,

I want to praise you young Jedi. You have done well.

  • You asked for help only after you tried it yourself.
  • You didn't stop trying yourself after you asked for help.
  • When your hard work paid off, you didn't just stop there. You thought about your brother developers and returned to post a solution.

I commend you sir.

I have also sent you some credits for leading my example. They may come in handy if you hit some tougher problem and get help from a mentor. You can then show your appreciation for their help.

It is possible, but unlikely that things like MTU size are the problem. If that was the case, the problem would exist for all websites as well as any traffic.

cthorpe,

A little detective work shows that the three sites you mention all have their DNS service at easydns.com. It sounds like you might be experiencing some issues with DNS. As you run into these problem sites, see if they are also handled by easydns. I agree with f0dder that is most likely an issue of this nature.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Let's Bundle Our Orders For Software995 Toolset
« Last post by tinjaw on March 19, 2008, 08:29 AM »
It doesn't look like there is enough interest here to make five orders. We will still get a $5 discount for three order, but the discount doubles to $10 if we can get two more.

What do you two think? Should we hold out for two more interested people, or should we settle for the $5 discount?

Not a dumb question, but I have tried that. Removing the video card results in the proper beep code (1 long - 3 short). Removing the memory results in the proper beep code (1 long repeating). I can't remember what it did when I removed the CPU and tried turning it on.

I have just filled out the webform for tech support from Asustek. I'll let you know what they reply. The auto reply claims a 48-hour turnaround.

Thanks for all the help. I suspect my ultimate answer will be, "It's dead, Jim". Oh joy. Time to built the server from scratch all over again.  :(

« Last post by tinjaw on March 18, 2008, 07:09 PM »
Putting aside for the moment that such a program, can be written, because it can  :P, why do you want this? How are you going to use it?

I ask because it will fundamentally determine how such a program would work. I mean, what would you do with a listing of a thousand files that went ten sub directories deep? What purpose would it serve?

For example, do this. Open a command prompt and run this.

dir c:\windows /S /B > c:\filelist.txt

Wait about 15 seconds and then open up the 1+ MB file it produces (c:\filelist.txt). What good is it?

Thanks for the link. My RSS feed reader is backlogged beyond all hope. I'm about to just claim RSS bankruptcy and start over. The thing that stops me from doing so is knowing there will be gems like this one that I will lose out on reading. The pragmatist in my says just declare bankruptcy and the gems will eventually rise to the top and be linked to in some future post that comes across my RSS feed and I will, in the long run, read all the gems sooner or later. Then my OCD kicks in.  :P
