General Software Discussion / Re: Another reason to drop Kaspersky?
« Last post by Darwin on September 27, 2010, 11:03 AM »
Well, I suspect that this may be related to you AV checking files as they are opened or copied. Does Kapersky have an option in its real-time protection settings to turn OFF checking files? I've noticed that this problem exacerbates itself when running a tabbed internet browser...
I think you are right.  I'm going to look into that.  It's always either the memory leak in Firefox slowing my computer down, or it's Kaspersky.  But, man, after I killed the Kaspersky exe, my computer was SOOOOO fast.

I hear ya... I'm uneasy about turning this feature off in VIPRE, but that is what Sunbelt recommends. As noted elsewhere, I was amazed at VIPRE's light footprint but lately it's getting bigger. I'm probably going to run MSE when my current VIPRE subscription ends.

General Software Discussion / Re: Anyone familiar with Oops!Backup?
« Last post by Darwin on September 26, 2010, 11:16 PM »
Does Oops!Backup fully support Unicode? The word 'Unicode' is not mentioned on their site, not even in the otherwise amazing user guide.
 :tellme:

I'm not sure what you are looking for, Curt (ie unicode in the GUI or ability to backup unicode documents?) - I  have unicode documents (in Korean) that are backed up just fine, though. Unicode file names are also displayed correctly within the Oops!Backup "Go back in time" screen, too

Er... what's a ring-back tone? OK, Codetrucker did a good job of describing/explaining them, but I've never encountered them in the wild, myself. Sound annoying, though...

My pet peeve are car stereos. I really don't want to hear the "whoomph" of your sub-woofer when you drive by my house at 2 am... (or at any other time, for that mater! Further, I cannot imagine that it's safe to drive around like that  >:(

One *possible* (pie in the sky?) solution to a dwindling income when dealing with lifetime licenses would be to provide a "donate to author" link on the website. Keep it low key and see what happens? I know DonL does this with XYPlorer... I wonder how effective this has proven for him? Of course, I haven't donated since I purchased a license  :-[

Great to hear from you Rob and welcome to DC

A quick question about lifetime licenses - are all existing licenses "liftetime" or only those sold during a specific period?

I suppose you're right, Curt <sigh> I had high hopes for GTL and grew frustrated with the lack of bug fixes and relied on the forum to keep track of what was going on, what issues other users had (so that I could act accordingly), and development. Honestly, what put me over the edge was the lack of progress in fixing the bugs that existed/incorporation of ideas such as using an existing backup and the fact that every bug fix that got released seemed to introduce new bugs!

OK my abject apologies - rant over. I like Genie software and hope they get this sorted out. For now, I'm VERY happy with Oops!Backup Pro.

Just to note: the Genie Forum is STILL down  >:( As far as I can tell, the forums are gone for all their products. Both the ones I own, Genie Timeline and Genie Backup Manager Pro 8 have been off-line for at least a month or more.

Are you ready for the BlackPad?
not unless it can run Windows 7.

Not then... apparently the rumour is that it will run a new proprietary OS from QNX Software Systems.

Before I was a parent, if had any inkling of what an ass I sounded like trying to impose my parenting theories on people who were parents in the real world, I would have kept my little bobblehead mouth shut.

I cringe when I think about some of the attitudes I had pre-fatherhood...

Regarding the OP, are there any FOSS equivalents of DeepFreeze? Just a thought.

I think it may be that the pics were taken by a professional photographer who probably wanted to capture people "naturally" as opposed to standing in an awkward, stilted pose, grinning like an idiot!

Most of our family photos from the period feature smiles when the picture was taken by a family member/friend and serious looks when taken by a pro. The exception are photos of my grandfather - very dour!

There is also the reality that before WWII, much of North America was rural - the majority of people lived in small towns and/or on farms. Post-WWII the North American economies BOOMED (well, Canada and the USA did - not sure about Mexico) and people en masse moved into the cities and away from hard manual labour. Instant, processed, and ready-made/pre-packaged foods were also developed as part of the war effort and started to appear in greater numbers on grocery store shelves after the war ended, fast food restaurants proliferated and many more women entered the work force, so there was more of a market for pre-packaged food. Overall, North Americans in general and Americans in particular have been the victims of their own economic and social success, with respect to the overall health of the population(s).

Another shift that has occurred as the industrialization of western economies in general has matured is one away from manufacturing (and manual labour) and production and toward service industries.

These are genearlizations, of course...

Wow! What does the site being American have to do with anything?

Anyway, you evidently struck a nerve, Curt!

Considering that that was your only post (I read it), "majorattitude's" response was way over the top.

FWIW - you didn't really sound that sour, perhaps a bit exasperated, but nothing to warrant that response. Your writing (in English) is much more lucid than your respondent's! I'm still not sure what "Q-Dir stays as well just to be a dick" means, unless he means that he is not going to start hosting the unicode version. Hmm... wants to be a dick, eh? Accomplished.

I should have mentioned, I suppose, that the screenshot is how Windows 7' clock and calendar popup (which requires a single click on the time; hovering just produces a pop-up telling you the date) appear "out of the box" - I haven't tweaked anything.

Superboyac - are on Vista or Win 7 yet? I ask because once I moved to Vista I really didn't feel the need to run a third-party clock app...

tomos - I still have a 3 machine license for VIPRE Premium and overall like it. However, I'm running MS Security Essentials on all but my own computer and MS Security Essentials seems fine to me. When my VIPRE subscription ends I may just switch my computer over as well. VIPRE started out lean and mean and very resource miserly. However, with v.4 each new build seems a bit more intensive and I've experienced quite a bit of disk thrashing and CPU hogging with it, to the point that I've had to disable it from scanning files and folders as they are opened. We'll see how it fares over the coming months...

[off-topic]Hope you are well![/off-topic]

I've been running the IE9 beta since it came out - so far, no issues. I expect that the address bar issue will be rectified before this goes gold. Overall, I like it - like MrCrispy, IE9 seems quicker, more stable, and less CPU intensive than IE8.
