General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Media Player skin problem
« Last post by Lashiec on October 21, 2008, 05:20 PM »
Probably a malformed skin. Open a "Run..." box (you can do that from the Start menu), and type "regedit". Then navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Player\Skins" and you'll see a value that reads "CurrentSkin". Right click on it, and select "Modify". You'll see a path there that should point to your current skin, so change the path to point to another skin, like the default "Windows Classic.wmz" (if you use WMP11, that is).

Find And Run Robot / FARR window narrows by itself at random
« Last post by Lashiec on October 19, 2008, 01:46 PM »
So, I've observed some weird behaviour in FARR during the last versions. When I run it for the first time, the window is a perfectly wide floating thing on my desktop, which I really like because it offers me more information about the links at a glance, like so:

Screenshot - 17_09_2008 , 14_01_43.png

But, as time passes and I use the system as normal, I observed that the window ends up narrowed like this:

Screenshot - 13_10_2008 , 1_00_47.png

The only explanation I can find for this is that the window loses part of its width due to a change in desktop resolution, probably triggered by some full-screen game or video. Is there a way to stop this to happen?

Living Room / Re: Digital Music Purchases - Downloads or Ripped CD's?
« Last post by Lashiec on October 17, 2008, 05:47 AM »
I always buy full albums and rip them to the computer as soon as I reach home. These days I usually make my purchases either in second hand stores, or online, as the price of CDs here are outrageous. I would buy digital music if Amazon offered its catalog outside the USA, but this is not the case, so I have to resort myself to the physical format. Besides, they only offer MP3s, and if the music business is going to go digital, at least I want things to remain faithful to the old paradigm, so no FLAC, no buy :)

General Software Discussion / Re: WINDOWS 7 THREAD (ongoing)
« Last post by Lashiec on October 14, 2008, 04:39 PM »
Ah, OK. In the case of the taskbar, actually that's the Windows Vista taskbar, and the picture was present in the blog article linked there, to illustrate the starting point from which they'll improve it in Windows 7. In the other case of the other picture, I really don't have any idea, but it's clearly not related :D

The PDC is near, so I guess there we'll see something that looks different from Vista, even if it's only in terms of new features.

Well, so early in development it's natural. It should be said that given that Windows 7 is slated to be an improvement of Vista more than a new OS, don't be surprised if it ends up looking mostly the same.

I suppose the fact they have HD movies to rent from iTunes does not have anything to do with the decision :P

Huh, nVidia chipsets, and they said it would not happen. I hope Apple does not get the same problems from their IGPs other assemblers are getting, otherwise it could be a really bad move on their part. Not that their chipsets are well-known for running cool. Oh well, we'll see what happens.

Living Room / Re: Should Microsoft become an OEM (PC manufacturer)?
« Last post by Lashiec on October 14, 2008, 12:38 PM »
What I was thinking of was something more like a Linksys router. Something you unbox, plug in, run a configuration CD for, and start using. Something like a non-portable (otherwise they'll get stolen) EeePC with the OS, office suite and browser already installed. You could rig it so it could only be updated (or have software installed) through a specified SMS or WUS. That would protect you from  rogue apps, pirated software, and other the "user-installed" headaches IT departments lose sleep and time over.

An Eee Box then :). Or a Dell Studio Hybrid.

And yeah, let Microsoft stay where it is. The XBOX venture, while successful, it's costing them millions, the first console because of low sales, the second one because of the RROD. A line of PCs would be a headache.

Living Room / Re: My computer is older than YOUR computer!
« Last post by Lashiec on October 14, 2008, 12:18 PM »
I have an old MSXw, a Philips VG8020, from around 1987 at least, inherited from my middle brother. It could be older though, but my first memories of it go back to when I was around 4 years old, seeing my brother play Gauntlet, Knight Lore or Gunfright. It's like new, and works like a charm after all these years, except that it needs a new external tape recorder.

MSX_Philips_VG8020.jpg

Check out the specs: 80KB of RAM expandable to 200 KB (ZOMG!), 32KB of ROM and... TWO CARTRIDGE SLOTS! A killer machine, indeed ;D. Nah, seriously it provided many hours of fun through the years for us, and I learned BASIC on it.

My oldest brother has a Spectrumw on the attic, but I never saw it, so it may work or not. I ignore when it was bought, but either I was a baby, or I wasn't even born when the machine got home.

General Software Discussion / Re: Reorganizing music library
« Last post by Lashiec on October 12, 2008, 07:16 PM »
I just tried foobar2000. It doesn't seem to work. It appears that the %album artist% tag doesn't work here. In most, if not all cases, it's not picking up the data that I had set in MediaMonkey.

If foobar2000 finds a custom tag which can not map to its predefined set of fields, it usually shows it up with <NAME OF THE TAG> in the Properties window. foobar sometimes fails to read all tags (for example, if they use an unsupported codepage), but I don't think MediaMonkey does this. So, to use such custom tag, you have to enclose its literal name in %%

I also suspect that it didn't find all of my songs, but I can't see any way to verify this -- there's no report I can find that would give me even a total count of them.

Drop the directory that contains all songs in a playlist, go to View -> Playlist Switcher and voilĂ . Alternatively, if you're using the media library, activate the album list, right click on "All music" and then select "Properties".

I haven't tried mp3tag yet; from the website I can't see how my task could be accomplished.

Again, you have to drop the files in the file view, and go to Convert -> Tag - Filename, and play with the tags there. To create folders in such dialog, you have to use something like %name of one tag%\%name of another tag% IIRC, the syntax is pretty similar to foobar.

foobar2000 FTW. It takes care of everything, including the Album artist tags, and it includes a ridicule number of predefined renaming patterns. You can also use its script language to tailor the proposed pattern and create the A-Z folders as well, so everything will be set up in one operation, it will probably involve the use of the $cut(X,Y) or the $left(X,Y) function with %artist% as the X, and 1 as the Y. Mp3tag can take care of it as well, just it will be less straightforward.

EDIT: Errr, no, it would involve the use of %album artist% :-[

But there's probably a lot of reasons for google doing this. gPhone might be one of them?

I don't think so, Android was in development prior Google wanted to do Chrome. Actually, the Android browser served as inspiration for Chrome development, if we consider some of the things Google people said. In any case, hiring key people from the Firefox project, and let them waste time doing nothing is not exactly very clever, so it also amazes me how could anyone could not predict this would happen sooner or later.

Who do you trust more Google's Apps or some unknown volunteer's fork? Better stick with the official releases IMHO.

Well... ;D

So, how is the program so far? Any nasties in there? I mean, like random bugs, and rendering problems.

DC Gamer Club / Re: Raptr
« Last post by Lashiec on October 05, 2008, 06:47 PM »
My question is, how does it know what you're playing on Wii?

I guess you must specify what you've been playing on a given time for the service to know, unlike Steam or the XBOX 360.

The idea is not new, there are a few other similar services, each one with its own take on how your gaming habits should be tracked (including one from Napster's own Shawn Fanning, which EA bought a while ago), but AFAIK all of them have flying under the radar. Raptr seems to be the most inclusive one, and most important, the one who takes the biggest advantage of the different information provided by the various systems it can track and that's some time you save from having to input the data manually. There is a good review by the folks at Ars Technica, BTW.

It's also nice it has a library of games, with info, pictures and videos of the games ala MobyGames, BUT it has a serious lack of retro systems, which is quite disappointing for me (that, and I'm too lazy to migrate data from one service to another :P)

IIRC, the Dune movie suffered massive cuts from its original length, which was something like 7 hours. As always, if you want the best version, get the book :) (that also goes for that Phantom Menace thing).

[Edit: Removed two previous posts requesting illegal registration keys for Avira - but left extremely polite response. Carol ]

Hey, that one is easy. Or if you prefer, the free way

BTW, the message is not meant to be sarcastic, but DonationCoder does not handle free license keys for shareware software unless there is some kind of giveaway. The site also offer discounts for certain software, which you can take advantage of if you're a member. And the Avira suite you mention is not included in any of the options. So, either you pay up for a license at the Avira shop, or you get the free version, which is quite nice by itself.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 7 -- ribbons for everyone!
« Last post by Lashiec on September 23, 2008, 06:59 PM »
Personally, I couldn't care less about an interface change in apps I don't use, but I'm interested in what's the reasoning behind these changes. Is it because of the novelty factor, and the attractiveness of the Ribbon, that Microsoft changed the UI of two simple programs, so they could have some visible changes from Vista to Windows 7, and thus sell the OS as a really newer Windows, while ignoring all the reasons behind the existence of the Ribbon, just like most apps using it are doing? Or is it because of the future addition of major features to Paint and Wordpad that would need a different UI to accommodate its usage?

We're probably a bit early in the Windows 7 development process to actually answer these, but in any case, both paths are not exactly worth following, the first one for being just a marketing gimmick, and the second one, for antitrust concerns. And considering that things like Movie Maker or Live Mail are already being stripped from Windows in favour of their webware counterparts, perhaps it's time to clean up even more fluff?

I would say be bold - drop all compatibility with non NT systems for a start. There are no preNT operating systems still supported by OS so why saddle everyone with compatibility layers etc.. If they want compatibility with earlier Windows why not redesign VirtualPC to run apps transparently on the desktop in the correct virtual OS?

YEAH, I'm all for this. Less hassle for everyone, and probably the compatibility rate would go even higher.

Next, get rid of ALL the eyecandy nonsense. Have themes like in Windows 98 if you must but get rid of all the stuff that demands a specific graphics card type or capacity - windows should be able to run on a system with built in graphics with minimal use of memory.

No, no, even the Amiga OS has hardware compositing right now. What Windows 7 needs are better ways to turn graphic gimmicks into useful things, either via new features in the OS, or by letting developers play with them.

For me one crucial idea would be don't install any services unless you actually need/use them. The first time you use an app that needs service X just install it at that point - they can easily sit in a folder inside the Windows folder to make this simple - and make it so that when you exit an app any services that you only use for that app are automatically stopped and unloaded. That way no one would need apps like nLite to strip out all the unnecessary CPU hogging processes that serve no purpose for 99% of users.

Yep, they're already looking into this for the boot process, reduce the boot time by just starting the minimal amount of services (among other things).

  • it's too 1st grade-looking, as if I'm too stupid to use a menu

Which is fine, I prefer to feel like a 1st grader which can reach the function he wants in two clicks (just one if you reuse it) than like a PhD traversing through cascading menus over and over again. Yes, I know I can accelerate the use of those functions using keyboard shortcuts, but there's a limit in how many you can remember per app without confusing the ones used by other app, and office suites have too many.

  • eats up a ridiculous amount of valuable screen space (float this thing as a sidebar since we're all using WIDEscreens now)

Indeed, although that could be easily solved if the ribbon could be zoomed out or hidden with just one shortcut (I think Office 2007 has the latter function).

  • it diminishes the role -- and efficiency -- of keyboard shortcuts.

I don't know in which way, the shortcuts are already there, and IIRC there's another shortcut to show which keys are used for each function. Besides, you can install that FARR-like plugin for Office and search through the functions.

General Software Discussion / Re: The New (And Improved?) VLC
« Last post by Lashiec on September 23, 2008, 06:14 PM »
While it's better than the previous version (at least the interface is normal now), there are quite a few rough edges. Certain elements of the "Open" dialog overflow the limits of this dialog (although I suspect it's caused by my shellstyle), file parsing in the playlist works whenever it feels like it, tag reading is still flaky, and video quality is lower than that of the DirectShow-based players (though it seems like it can also use external codecs with this version).

Still, it's quite a leap in many aspects, and it will surely be refined in forthcoming versions. It's not up to the standards of the competition (Zoom Player, MPC...), but then again VLC is SO much more than a mere media player.
