Big difference in resource usage with Screenshot Capture idling at around 300k.
The others are usually much more.

Before reinstalling windows, you might just do FF.
Perhaps even deleting settings and preferences.
Or backup to an older version of FF, and see if it works.

http://www.filehippo...om/download_firefox/

Also I was thinking your graphics card may need updating.
My guesswork anyway...
503
See if it will update by way of your addons manager-plugins.
I had the latest flash plugin, and it still wanted to update through here.
And it did do an update.... ;)

Yes, same here, get the yellow bar saying it can't connect and you are in offline mode with LastPass.
Sometimes it only shows for a couple seconds and sometimes it stays up till I x it off.

If I click 'restart' FF it does not show up, that always works, it seems.
An annoyance to wait for my browser to load properly though.

Does it say why you can't upgrade to Windows 7?

It could be reading your system wrong, since you have had so much trouble with it.

From what I've seen or remember of your computer,
it should take W7 easily.

It will backup your Vista to windows.old which you can explore.
Though I've never tried to explore it, I've heard you can.
Either by mounting it or opening it. Can't recall.

At least 1gb of ram and a decent cpu will do it.
I have a single core 1gb laptop that had Vista on it and it upgraded, no problem.

If you buy W7, you may want the full version and not just the upgrade.
An upgrade disk requires that you have a windows operating system on your computer.
In case you want to format the whole thing and install, or put it on a new hard drive.
W7 Business is best imo.

General Software Discussion / Re: Cnet's Download.com and the installer scam

Funny, I just tried to update my VSO Downloader and it wanted to use cnet.
No other download option from vso, so I tried it.
Clicking download, my Eset Nod32 blocked the connection.

Found it at MajorGeeks, another great download site.

I like to go to the original site to get the download.
SnapFiles and FileHippo makes it pretty easy to get to the publisher.
You have to go to the info on the publisher.
So 2 clicks to get to the site I want.

Example-
I could download from here.
http://www.snapfiles...m/get/myfolders.html
But in the interest of knowing who produced the program,
updates and other programs they have,
and security reasons.
I will click the publisher link-
http://www.snapfiles...lishers/7149330.html
Them the 'go to publisher' link.
Which finally takes me here.
http://www.coretechnologies.com/

SnapFiles and FileHippo are the main download sites I subscribe to in my reader.
The rest are blogs like gHacks , FreewareGenius and a few others I like.
I dropped a lot of others that were not safe or posting the same things the other sites were.

Any programs that I come across that use cnet to distribute,
usually have an alternate download site or a direct link I can use.

ProcessTamer / Re: Reinstall
« Last post by cmpm on February 07, 2012, 11:18 AM »
hm, it should be a .ini file somewhere...I guess
Since it's dealing with process', it may be somewhere else.
Search the computer for ".ini" files, without the quotes.
You will get a lot of them probably.

I don't use process tamer myself , so I can't help much.
Maybe someone who uses it can help more.

The settings should be in an application data folder.
Under your user name, open that folder.
Under 'tools'-'folder options'-'view' tab.
Click 'show hidden files, folders, and drives'.
Search for files in 'AppData'.

Nice write-up and quick review on gHacks for version 3!

http://www.ghacks.ne...t-captor-3-released/

Finally someone is calling it a Professional ScreenShot Program.
It may have been called that before,
but I haven't seen it as clear as gHacks, in this article.

Verdict

Screenshot Captor is a professional screenshot taking application for Windows. It offers a rich feature set and ships with features that are usually only available in commercial applications.

http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/

Fast Picture Viewer in auto-advance mode can do what you want.
It's like 1 second or two per pic, like a slide show, but really fast.
Just drag it to the monitor you want it running on.
It will include all subfolders in auto-advance, and can be full screen.

You will get the full version for 30 days then it will switch to basic.
But the basic version has these options.
Right click FPV's taskbar to get the auto-advance options and more.
After you have selected the folder from the options in the menu.

I don't know why they want so much info,
but all I get is their newsletters, which I could unsubscribe to.

Never any phone calls.
You could put an old disconnected number in I suppose.

Anyway, the info thing didn't bother me.
It may stop some from getting these tools.

There is supposed to be an updated rootkit detector coming out in February.

You could try these tools.
Let them run overnight, they take a while.
The rootkit detector will find stuff that is supposed be there though.
You should be able to spot the trouble, if any.

http://www.sophos.co...ootkit/download.aspx

http://www.sophos.co...l-tool/download.aspx

http://www.sophos.co...l-tool/download.aspx

Twice I was able to fix 2 different problems with the rootkit detector.
Once there was some .contentIE5 that was messing up my browsing.
Removed all the .contentIE5 stuff.

Never a boot problem with chkdsk as you describe,
but Sophos is very thorough imo.

A reboot is required after removal of problems.

Cool! I haven't used FARR in a while myself.
For music I just right click the folder I want to play and hit play with mpc or vlc usually.
Of course someone with a lot more songs then me might want something with more specifics.

Yes, Carol, I was thinking of those as well.
But I thought they may be too much for the specific task stated.
I think 'Everything' would be fine if you remember the variables to type in.

I would bet one of the mediaplayers would be perfect for the request.
Since it's just an artist name or song name to choose.
Not sure which one could perform through a search box like that.
Some kind of minimal view with an index or playlist to choose from.
Never thought of it I guess...till now.

General Software Discussion / Re: Any way to embed a search box on the desktop?

The high cpu use is from the program indexing the targets.
The default ones initially, then any more you would add.
After it's done indexing, the cpu usage will drop.

So if you let it run a bit and at startup, letting it stay running,
which is one of the options, it will have the files or folders indexed.
And ready for faster results.

Just using it for a few minutes will not show it's true speed.

It's not made for the whole computer,
that would take too long to index,
just specific, smaller sets of folders or files.

Maybe what you could use.
Can be configured for folders and/or file types.

No auto play, just double click the find.

I'm not afraid, just been watchful.
Yes, think rationally, good point IainB.
Maybe 'shudder' doesn't communicate what I really think.

Too often stamping 'religion' on something,
takes accountability away, opening up the potential for abuse.
In tactics used, people used and unintended consequences,
as 40hz pointed out.

And I'm not anti-religion,
more like a canary in a coal mine.
Cause I am involved in religions.

Maybe I'm way off topic,
or not.
I use the net almost every day.

I agree Shades, dictatorships rule the religions, for the most part.
Mostly because of the blatant lack of checks and balances.

And the apparent thought and doctrine of being excluded or included in a 'heaven'.
To which they have no idea what it is as well as hell or eternity.
To these that separate the saved/unsaved or similar terms,
I classify as hate groups. With western religions just as bad or worse as some eastern ones.

There are notable exceptions though, both east and west, putting everyone together,
and maintaining individual relief status. Including Atheists.
And a few quite large and growing that you may never hear of.
Even in the medical fields some are waking up to the common denominator.

Hmm...I think I'm going to go back to declaring myself a Rasta-Judeo-Presbyterian-Islamic-Taoist-Bhuddist-Wiccan. And maybe do a quick LLC filing for a new faith-based organization. Something like The First Congregation of the Divine Revelation and Celestial Harmony. (Which resonates at 40hz in the frequency spectrum - in case you hadn't already guessed. :P)

That way I can (at my discretion) take offense at anything anybody says or does to me - and demand protection under constitutional and international law.

So...anybody interested in becoming a member of my new clergy? Reasonable rates! And, this month only, we're running a special on elevations to the rank of bishop. 50% off through January 31, 2012.

Don't delay! ;D

Ha! +++1
Here in this state you need at least 3 people to start a religion.
Don't know about other places.

I have no problem with the goal. Not sure what else is behind it though.
The unknown factors....
The problem is people can change the strategy and then the goal could vary.
Or even change the goal depending on the people involved or will be.
'Religions' can change focus, without anyone noticing, something to watch for.

Like google, used to be just a nice search engine.
Now they want a piece of every transaction on the net.
Even .01% is millions.
A free service.....for good reason.

Just saying, or 'free' advise :) , be careful about things.

The word religion makes me shudder.
Because of the potential for trouble.

I know there are many that do not cause trouble,
but there are many that do.

Centralizing power over aspects of the net could be another potential threat.
Even if it's in the name of keeping it free.

With individuals being named as spearheading this,
that alone gives them some power.

Maybe I don't know enough about the goals or ideas of this deal,
so it's just my opinion as an outsider of a sort.
