N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Teaser: JottiQ
« Last post by worstje on December 16, 2010, 07:48 PM »
Okay, I need some input for the file context menu as I cannot decide on the file context menu text. (You get that when rightclicking a file. For example, Scan with YourScanner.)

Things I've thought of so far...

  • Add to JottiQ
  • Send to JottiQ
  • Scan with JottiQ I am a bit less fond of this one since the action itself doesn't actually cause it to start scanning unless the app is configured that way.
  • Queue for scan

Likewise, I've tried to think whether it might be better to just put Jotti, Jotti Queue, queue and whatever other alternatives you can think of for the word JottiQ above.

I'd love your suggestions, everyone. :)

And now it is curtains time... curtains OPENING time. I hereby promote my mystery project to the Teaser stage of being.

The name... *drumroll*... JottiQ.

Ok, that's horrible. So what does it do? Well, the first screenshot pretty much explains that bit:

So, it is basically a tool to make easier use of Jotti's malware scan.

Ok, fine. The main interface also gets a screenshot:

Test builds really will be out soon I hope, January 1st at the latest. :D

Special thanks go out to vlastimil for the awesome lady bug icon.

I demand the biggest tease award back. Mine is, as of yet, still very secretive. ;)

On-topic: Looks like a nice app. There's tons of colourpickers out there, but everyone has a tiny bit different usecase so the variation is quite welcome imo. :)

In that case I'm jumping on that memberkit right now. :D

I was thinking of waiting with my request till after the new year, since I am joining the NANY joy as well... :) and I want to save mouser the cost of needing to send me two different packages when it isn't truly needed. Or are the packages thusly sized that you'd have to send out two no matter what? (I can imagine the member kits being sized to suit a box.)

Well, HTTP does not support file uploads in the way FTP just lets you upload a file to a location.

There are forms you can submit that can contain a file upload, but that is not the same thing as that requires a script on the other side to interpret and do with it whatever needs doing. Likewise, unless you use HTTP authentication, that credential method probably wouldn't work as most sites tend to rely on a cookie-based solution

So, depending on your situation, you might have to change your approach to either ftp, or a more involved script-based solution.
508
Ok, call me silly, but what is it that the hibernation feature in Windows does not have? It's functionally pretty identical to the save-the-vm-state thing people keep offering up, or so I believe anyway.

Sure, it doesn't deal with crashes etc very well, but I wouldn't know how well VMs would deal with that either...

Mmm, fuzzy logic.  :-*

On that note... work has been expedient for me. So expedient that I was going to offer up a public beta for release by tomorrow, and then mouser changed my mind. All of you can blame him for the lack of a beta. ;)

Now... for the real reason.

The real reason the beta is not going public is because the server API I am programming against is still a bit open for abuse, and my app is similarly able to abuse the crap out of it as I proved 20 minutes ago when I got it to throw out 'internal errors'. At least I didn't take down the entire website by sheer accident. :)

Anyhow, I am in a good mood. What does that mean? If work tomorrow goes anywhere according to plan, I might do a very limited beta. The person that is able to make me smile in the posts to come after this one... and is going to make a pledge to keep to my super-imposed secretive agenda will get to do a one-person sneak-peek beta preview and laugh with me at the rest of the unenlightened. ;)

UrlSnooper / Re: WinPCap issues - no npf.sys file on my system
« Last post by worstje on November 29, 2010, 10:29 PM »
Try using Process Monitor (not Process Explorer) from Sysinternals. It's a bit of an unwieldy utility, but if you set up a filter for the installer (or maybe for the path in question, either ought to work) and then reproduce your issue, maybe you can see why it fails to open it as it ought to display the reason for the failure. I find it hard to believe it is a problem everyone running Windows 7 has as most packet-inspection utilities lean heavily on WinPcap.

Alternatively, try installing another program that comes with Winpcap? I seem to recall software bundling it with their apps to make them easier to use. An example of such a program would be Nmap. (It's kind of a hack, but probably easier than debugging the problem like I suggested just now since it wouldn't garantuee a fix...)

I haven't installed Winpcap in a while, nor used this one.. but I bet it is trying to _write_ said file and doesn't have the permissions, hence it not existing. Did you try running that install with administrative privileges?

Okay, so I deem the time ripe to lift the fog of immaturity, to banish the constant curiousity and satisfy it with a screenshot.

Yes yes. A whole screenshot. An image says more than a thousand letters Q ever would.

Enjoy... muhahaha. :)

Sure, I'll take care of those issues when I have a bit of time.

(My laptops touchpad uses a two-fingersalute-on-the-touchpad to mimick the middle mouse button. Does that work for your netbook?)

I believe I fixed the bug, and then some.

Teensymon v0.3.1 can be found in the Teensymon open directory.

Changes:  (mostly for my own memory if problems persist; I've been too lazy to set up source control or backups. :-\)
  • Fixed: check against a (dis)charge rate reported as 0. (Although the Windows API documentation implies that should never be returned.. which is likely the reason only some computers with some batteries have it, depending on the exact model of battery in their computer.)
  • Fixed: popup menu memory leak
  • Extra sanity protection: clearing battery buffers before requesting data
  • Change: the date format now matches the request from the original user.

Whenever I find time for v0.4 is when I'll add some sort of configuration file so people can properly adjust stuff without me needing to hardcode things. But with two NANY submissions that still need a fair bit of attention, I'm not diving into all those details for now. :)

rsatrioadi, is there any chance we could talk on IRC? To be honest, I am pretty clueless where to find the error as I can't reproduce it, and while I have a tiny inkling of things I could try to change, I might have a bit more luck in a direct conversation to zero in on the issue.

Hrm, that's weird. A crash?

I've had it running on my 32-bit XP laptop for several hours, and on my desktop (without the battery info, obviously) as well. I'll dive into the issue and see what I can do to fix it.

And yeah - sometimes less choice is more choice. That's how the Apple-fanatics reason, right? xD

I officially deny all involvement with any such project. If such a thing were to be true, and I am not saying it is true, then it would be a very wise move in stark contrast to all my past actions. Instead I deem it more rewarding in the long haul to keep expectations down while working them up at the same time.

If people just rush to the front, fight for the first spot, and so forth?

But… aren't you creating a free for all program?

Yeah, but my free-for-all is the kind where everyone gets to profit, as opposed to the one with the biggest fists. ;)

I present to all of you... Teensymon v0.3.0!

You can get it from the Teensymon open directory. You can find this version and any future versions I happen to release at that location. (Saves me from updating links left and right, yes?)

I was too lazy to add in tons of stuff involving configurability, and went for the bare necessities:
  • Anti-feature: Black background
  • Anti-feature: White text
  • Anti-feature: A single line of a tiny 8pt Consolas font
  • Feature: Shows whether you are using battery (DC) or current from your wall (AC).
  • Feature: Shows how long you have till your battery takes a nap.
  • Feature: Shows how long it takes for your battery to fully recharge. (Sadly, it seems the nature of batteries aging means it instead becomes an impossibly long to satisfy time the further it gets along with charging.)
  • Feature: Left-click and drag around.
  • Feature: Middle-click hides for 5 seconds in case it gets in the way.
  • Feature: Right-click offers a menu with an About and an Exit option.
  • Feature: The file is only 45kb large. It can't get much smaller than that!

Stuff that might need adding in future versions:
  • A configuration file with settings like the colours used, more detail about the date formats and such to use, etc.

All in all, I have tried to keep the output as short as possible, but I think the long date format from your mockup is not as useful as you might expect it to be in the new drag around format. I think something like 2010-11-26 18:07 is shorter, more to the point and friendlier to your limited screen real-estate. But for now the long date format is what it shows as it most closely matches what you requested. :)

If there is anything else you'd like to see added, give a shout and I'll see what I can do. :)

Edit: Oh right. I have a habit of compiling against the redistributable libs as opposed to a full all-in-one package, so you may need to get Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86) to run it.

(That all kind of throws my 'only 45kb' argument out of the window, huh? Well, just wait till you get dozens of apps needing those libs, then you'll see it saves space.  :D)

Otherwise, I am sure someone else would be just as glad to take care of it.

That setup is such a huge collossal waste. I wouldn't want it like that. ;)

For one, you now permanently trade away like a dozen vertical pixels all over your screen. Second, some of that stuff is so vocal.. it's depressing.

Wouldn't a really tiny always-on-top window work better? It could be positioned right below the minimize/maximize/close buttons since on Vista+ they're about only half as high as usual anyway. There's next to nothing it could cover by accident I think, seeing how that spot is rarely used in the first place no matter how you arrange your windows. Or you could do the same just to the left of those buttons, although that might be more likely to cover something by accident.

Don't get me wrong; it is very possible to reserve the top row. But if it is space you want on your screen, reserving a whole horizontal strip is madness. Ever since I've gone widescreen I've put my taskbar vertical just so I waste less useful space.

Let me know what you think. If I find a bit of time, I can quite likely code that up for you.

Dutch article on this subject

It's kind of useless to most I suppose, but I figured I'd post it since my contact at the university had no clue where to find more info. The article above says results have not been published yet, there's some details about numbers and testing methods, but TNO (a big organisation dedicated to nature/physical research) says they do not support the university and that any conclusions are the universities own. (Although one TNO member did from time to time assist the researchers of the univesity.) The university itself also voices a wish to repeat the experiment with a bigger testing group over a longer period.

They're basically covering their asses since the effect of very fine dust in the air has not been excluded as a possible source yet.

All in all, I think the research was just fine. It just needs what every study needs: confirmation, and more specific tests to continue on the lack of answers and extra questions previous studies have brought on.
