General Software Discussion / Re: Process Tamer.. The Drink
« Last post by allen on February 08, 2008, 03:34 PM »
The real irony, here is. . . last I knew, you weren't much of an alcohol drinker mouser. Has that changed, or are you pumping untested fluid into the masses?

General Software Discussion / Re: FTP - How do I duplicate / copy remote folder?
« Last post by allen on February 08, 2008, 03:29 PM »
For future reference--

With dreamhost, just make sure your user is set as Shell Account; then just open telnet. (or snag a copy of putty) and connect to your domain using your ftp user/pass combo.

cp -r foldername copyname

General Software Discussion / Re: TheBat! 4.07 released
« Last post by allen on February 08, 2008, 03:22 PM »
I'd like to be able to use it as it does have some nice features, but the completely broken/gimped IMAP support once again had me uninstall it shortly after setting up my first account.

I actually tried TB! 4.07 imap/gmail this morning . . . after about 30 seconds, was finished.  RIT seems to take 1 step forward and two steps back every time they get near IMAP. I've never been remotely satisfied with TB/IMAP.

With my attachment to gmail . . . using TB as my main client is looking more unlikely with each passing day.

That said, I was a bit startled/pleased this morning when I found e-mails from the RIT bug tracker, bugs I'd submitted to the DB a couple years ago have been fixed and closed.  I'd forgotten all about them, it was sort of like finding a twenty dollar bill folded away in my pocket from who-knows-when.

General Software Discussion / Re: Opera M2 + Gmail + IMAP = not recommended
« Last post by allen on February 08, 2008, 03:12 PM »
So everything going ok? Back when gmail first offered IMAP, I jumped for joy -- but was quickly disappointed when, while waiting for Opera to sync, gmail blocked access to my account. . . how dare I use the new IMAP functionality!  New service, I suppose they needed time to tweak their malicious use sniffers. . . I'll let you be the canary, I'm afraid to try gmail/opera again.  (This is actually my second gmail account, my first was magically closed/locked out and they refused to re-activate it :/) -- early beta.

How many messages are you synchronizing? And are you downloading bodies or no?

on a unix system with shell access, you could telnet in and use the ol cp -r dirname copyname

I've been a paying fan of TB! for a solid decade now, so I'm not trolling by any means. . . and will upgrade to 4.1, but... honestly, has anyone ever heard of major version free, while the next decimal update to that major version is a paid upgrade?

I can remember when TB 2.0 was more mythological than anything--having been mentioned for years; RIT is known for major version changes that are not so much update based as version number (call it time, if you'd like) based, version 2.0 not being that different from late 1.x, same for 2 to 3, etc. -- so it's not a suprise that 4.0 is just a subtle update to 3.9x. But the pay for 4.1 as opposed to 4.0 just really blows my mind.  I'd wager it's a problem of arbitrary version numbering--and as tb is at 3.99, you have nowhere to go but 4.0.  But as a fan of sensible numbers, I'd rather pay for a trivial upgrade to 4.0 than pay to go from 4.0 to 4.1, understanding when paying for 4.0 that 4.1 will be a bigger update than 3.9 to 4.0 was.

It doesn't bother me in a way that would make me less likely to use the software, but this scores high, for me, on the WTF?! scale -- admittedly a scale RIT has been a frequent presence on.

(Unrelated, but nice to see you here Marek; having been subscribed to TBUDL for ... well, ages, your name is by no means unfamiliar!)

I adored Netscape; the Navigator Gold Suite kept me from sleep at night, just basking in its wonder. . .

But yeah, what he said. This is euthanasia.

This year, my resolution is the same as it has been for nearly fifteen years now--
I resolve this year to be free of hiccups.

For the record, I've never broken resolution.

I have a new web app in the pipes, might release it earlier than intended to get in on NANY -- depending on how the next few days go.

General Software Discussion / Re: Noah is almost fantastic, but what is it?
« Last post by allen on December 03, 2007, 10:04 PM »
Ahead of its time or behind?

The idea of merging everything isn't new--but no sooner did such suits start to surface, and people started reverse engineering to separate them under the premise that, in general, it's better to have one app that does one thing brilliantly than one app that does everything somewhat.

I'm sure it's fine, but... does it have the e-mail power of The_Bat! or Poco or Becky, does it have the browsing power of Opera or Firefox, et cetera.

Maybe everything will go full circle again. And again.

You could use my fSekrit to store registration keys :p - I personally use it for passwords for various things now.

I have an fSekrit file with all my registration keys in it; another with various website logins.  Good stuff.

I saw a picture of Allen taken a couple weeks ago. He's starting to look like ZZ Top!

Oh, come on now -- it's not that bad! -- though I have been considering trimming it down just a bit :)

Nice seeing you mouser, that's the first pic of you I've seen. Finally a humanoid image to associate with the man behind the curtain.

General Software Discussion / Re: FileZilla 3 gets released
« Last post by allen on September 10, 2007, 12:07 AM »
Might be time I check out FileZilla again.  I absolutely adored it for the longest time, then (maybe version specific) I had several instances of my account login data getting wiped in a short period of time and gave up on it. . .

I'd assume if it was wide spread and/or reproduceable, it's fixed now.

Living Room / Re: bioshock on a geforce 6 card - anyone tried?
« Last post by allen on September 01, 2007, 07:44 AM »
My computer is awful, at best, for gaming--but I was quite excited to play Bioshock on my 360.  Naturally, though, the system went "red ring of death" the day before the game's release.  I was thrilled.

I'd be game for scripting some snacks, that's about the size I like to script in anyway :P

Personally, I found myself more enamoured with Knytt than WaDF.  Knytt, while straight forward and simple, did a wonderful job of creating a certain ambience.  I found it strangely immersive, despite the simple graphic style used.  I was thrilled when I learned Knytt Stories was coming--thought it didn't release til tomorrow.  Tis a good day!

I curse like a sailor (Poor Deozaan when chatting with me drunk...), but in my defense was one. :)

I've been known to, on occasion, substitute with <insert explitive here> -- both in speak and type.  Naturally I lose the angle brackets when speaking.

ala

For <insert explitive here>'s sake . . . I get way too much <insert explitive here> spam.

Living Room / Re: New Translation of Teh Bible found!

I'd love to get my hands on such a translation--I'd especially love to read Ecclesiastes (The only book of the Bible I take for gospel) in that tongue. 1337 ftw, woot!

Lektora's "news paper" style feed collection makes it really easy to ignore most stories, since it's not your typical e-mail-esque read/unread.  Furthermore, it has great filtering capabilities.  It may be able to do what you want, on the gathering end.  As far as importing feeds goes, as is standard it supports OPML importation but that still leaves finding all the feeds to you.

x2 is a great explorer replacement, I used it prior to switching to XYplorer. It's lack of portability bugged me and I found XY's default shortcuts (and menu organization) to be more intuitive -- a few other features XY has make it a better fit to me. But X2 is a great package.  And, of course, there's no one complain about it having dual panes.

Living Room / Re: Best Freeware FTP client?
« Last post by allen on August 15, 2007, 05:26 AM »
I loved FileZilla, but had too many instances where it froze up, then ate my settings file--requiring me to re-setup all my ftp information, et cetera.  So I gave up on it.

AlFTP looks pretty good.  I don't have much hands on experience with it, yet--but it seems like a solid option.  If only that over-sized toolbar could be hidden (my complaint with all altools, really)

It's absolutely beautiful... I really, really want to love it.  The question is, can I revert to text mode or am I trapped in this modern gui?
