At least with Java you can go into the java control panel and turn off the update feature.  Its too bad that flash can't do the same.  But then you won't get the security updates either.

Hmmm, looks very interesting. Downloaded and installed it.   I wonder how it compares with Trout?

probably.  I did notice that FD added to my facebook that I had download and installed it.  They also placed a post asking what improvements were necessary.  I didn't see a checkbox that would have prevented this during the installation.  But maybe I just overlooked it?  :wallbash:

Just came upon Facebook Discovery today after reading Raymond CC's blog.  It looks very promising.

I know in the past, not everyone gets the new features at the same time.  My kids usually end up with them before I do.  Not sure why but it does happen that way.

I haven't heard of Digsby before, I will have to check it our more.

Not quite the answer I was looking for.  But leaving the window open uses up precious screen real estate that could be better used elsewhere.   :eusa_boohoo: :wallbash:

ok, "my friends on chat",(on the left side of the main page) only shows pictures of my friends and not their names. How do I get their names only back?  Because of the small pictures I am having to mouse over the pics to see who it is.  that is just not right.

I have googled this but no good answers yet.  Any ideas?

edit: I should also say that i have been through all the settings and don't find anything promising.

General Software Discussion / Re: need to scan a map and then color it
« Last post by techidave on October 12, 2010, 07:56 PM »
I will have to give that a try skwire.  The school has a HP scanjet 8300 so it should be able to do the job well enough.  It should as much as it cost.

it would be nice if there was something less complicated than those that were mentioned.

the biggest obstacle that i can see might be the fact that the boundary lines are not always straight lines.  Since I am not a Photoshop fan, not sure how your idea would work.

no but that would work Mouser, if it was a stand alone program.  the only thing it should run on Windows or a Mac OS.

I have found various online interactive coloring sites, but they are good only for their pages.

Oh yeah, it would also need the ability to save in a format such as doc, pdf, bmp, jpeg or whatever so that anyone could view it.

I didn't have any idea of how to google search this one.  So I thought I would ask my friends here at DC.   :)

thanks for the quick reply Mouser!

General Software Discussion / need to scan a map and then color it
« Last post by techidave on October 12, 2010, 10:15 AM »
I am wanting to scan like a US state map into my computer and then color or highlight the individual counties in a different color.  Now I realize that I probably won't be able to click inside of a county and then presto its teh color that I chose. Although that would be nice!

Is there such a piece of software out there that would allow me to do this?

thanks,
Dave

General Software Discussion / change internet speed on the fly
« Last post by techidave on October 05, 2010, 07:34 PM »
I don't know what this is called but is it possible to adjust "your" computers bandwidth on the fly, to the point of others on the same access point cannot get on??  I have been searching google but am not coming up with much.

Here is what happened:
One of my teachers tried to get on his own home network with a school laptop and it was so slow that he gave up.  When he mentioned something to his son about it, he said to wait just a minute and I will turn my bandwith down.

Is this really possible?

Living Room / Re: Why do we go out of our way to be unhelpful in forums?

I am with Superboy on this one.  95% of the time I have already google my question that I am posting here.  I also will look for synonym because as we all know, the success of your search depends on the words you use.

About a year ago, I posted a question on a well known "help forum" site and literally was blasted away because I wasn't a tech.  Well I am a tech for a small public school district.  And this information was also posted on the "about me" page.

I have found the DC forum to be the most courteous one that I have ever lurked on.  Oh sure, there are a few occasional blasts here and there but I can live with that.  which is why i keep coming back!

Thanks for being courteous and  gentle with me!  I know that my posts are sometimes not very informative or well thought out but unfortunately, that is the way my brain thinks.  :( :)

If all else fails, rip open a broken/unusable hard drive and use the magnets within. Those are everlasting strong.

Living Room / Re: Would someone mind recommending a good laser printer?
« Last post by techidave on September 26, 2010, 07:24 PM »

Many people are quite happy with Brothers. However, they are a disposable printers.

Disposable printers?  Even then you can get a "disposable" one that last like the energizer bunny.  Our school has a HP 1100 Laserjet with 100,000 pages on it in its 12 year or so life span.  While that is rare for a printer that is rated at 30,000 pages for its life, it does happen.   The only thing that has been done to it is the kit to fix the pulling multiple pages problem.

I have had good luck with some Samsung Lasers like a ML2150 and 3050.  Also had good lluck with the HP 2200 and 2300 Laserjets along with a Xerox Docuprint N2125.

General Software Discussion / Re: Portable apps suites - is there a good one?
« Last post by techidave on September 09, 2010, 01:51 PM »
That's not accurate either. You can download the PortableApps Launcher separately from any other apps.

Ok so you got me there.  Most of the ones I have checked will have a suite of apps that come with the launcer.  Some of those default apps I may not want.  And yes, I probably could just download the launcher only and then pick and choose.  But that's not what I want.  If I get the "complete" package it could have open office plus a whole bunch of stuff.  I may not want open office but want the other stuff.

General Software Discussion / Re: Portable apps suites - is there a good one?
« Last post by techidave on September 08, 2010, 05:47 AM »
I  think it would be very good to have a DC recommended portable apps, maybe even their own build of it.  That is if it doesn't interfere with some copyright or other legal thing that we are unaware of.

I still think this is harder than it needs to be and my experience with LBC last night wasn't all that great.  for one thing it kept locking up on me.  I am on XP pro sp3.  but that is another  post.

The cool part of LBC of what I could tell in the online helps is you can have more than one instance of it running.

I run portable apps from the file manager also but sometimes takes some looking to find the right one, hence a launcher for it.

It doesn't matter whose launcher you would use for portable apss, Liberkey or PortableApps, they will install stuff by default you may not want.  So a custom made DC build??  :) :)
