Haha I have to agree. My first PC building experience didn't work out so well. But luckily at the time the reason why I was interested in building a PC was overclocking (the folks at extremeoverclocking) helped me pick out the parts. So they also helped me troubleshoot it. It was from them that I learned alot about the hardware side of computers (and later the software side).

Though I also enjoy learning about things I use often. For example, I've recently got extremely interested in my car (a 94 Toyota Camry from my parents). Asking my dad if I can take care of all the aspects of a car including learning about the engine. Though he doesn't know much about that so I have to ask the Uncles on my mom side (who are mechanics). Just knowing about what I use gives me an oddly happy feeling. I guess also it provides you with a closer mesh of man and machine. As well as lets you fix your own problems.

I would've built my own laptop if I could.

Though for an OS choice you could always try Ubuntu (or rather any flavor of Linux. I just find Ubuntu the easiest). And for most people who don't use their computers for more then the basics. Buying a computer preloaded with Vista and the specs just to run Vista is a bit absurd to me.  When you could probably build (or find a cheap less then 200 dollars) computer. Throw Ubuntu or XP on there and get the same results for email, chat, office, whatever.

Just wondering, in Firefox and Opera you can set keyword searches. So if I go to Wikipedia and create a search for w. When I type w "whatever I'm looking for" it comes up in my web browser. I realize FARR has this same capability (as I've used it myself for google and I think Wikipedia once). But can we create searches anywhere that has a search engine? How would we add that to FARR?

Also, an idea for a plugin (inspired by the launcher dash video I saw). Google calendar support. Though I'm not sure how it would be implemented. Though if it's possible to create a new event then it should also let you edit reoccurence and add a note to it.

Well I'm trying to update my files in my backups (just a backup of music and images I've taken). In Vista and Ubuntu the default copying and pasting is smarter. If I copy and paste, I can choose to ignore existing files that way avoiding the trouble of having to recopy and repasting them.

But in XP I can't seem to do that. It just gives me the option to copy over the existing file/folder, copy over all existing files/folders, no, or cancel.

No seems to do the same thing as cancel.

I'm looking for an application where I can tell it to "ignore the existing files and just copy and paste the new ones over".

Err, how about: Windows XP  ;)

It's not obvious, but hold SHIFT down while you click 'No' and it'll do just what you're after.  :)

Why they couldn't have put a button in the dialogue box that does this is a complete mystery  :huh:

The patch is prettty much automatically now. And not all desktop theme software uses additional resources. Some like Aston use less then the default (it replaces explorer). Or Blackbox Win.

Though I guess those are more Desktop replacements then desktop theme.

Interesting launcher. I think the only thing I really liked (that may make me want to try it) is Google calendar. Though I do have rainlendar which doubles as calendar on my desktop (it has the ability to sync both ways to Google Calendar). The only thing is I setup my calendar so it's more specific then that (with recurrence or location, etc..).

Though it would be interesting to see something like that in Farr.  ;)

Foobar2000 with a customized interface can pull off the iTunes look (though it requires setup work).

Songbird works, though to me it doesn't feel that smooth as it reminds me to much of a web browser.

Amarok (for Linux but version 2.0 will also have Windows support) will pull it off nicely too. But I don't use KDE in Linux so whenever I used it in gnome it was always a bit slow since it had to load the KDE libraries (I doubt this will be a problem in the Windows version though).

As another user of Dragon Naturally Speaking I can say it works pretty well (especially after you take the time to train it). If you really wanted to. You could dictate with it. Though I personally prefer to type (I type fast). But I think I uses it a registration key (haven't used it in a while since I kinda dropped the whole speech recognition thing). Though it was nice to be able to order my computer to open programs while I was typing something up.

Vista's Speech recognition is also good. It comes with the OS but it also requires training. Though command wise I feel dragon natural is better.

Hmm it reminds me of Ubuntu's "apt-get install nameofprogram". And it basically checks it from the list of repositories at /etc/apt/sources.list (sad that I have these memories now isn't it).

Would be cool if you could add links for it to check. But that would require software companies and individuals to actually have a standard way of storing their newest files.

I already use Vista on my laptop (it came preinstalled). Though I'm not upgrading my Windows XP on my desktop anytime soon (hell I'll probably just leave it alone since I don't boot into it at all unless I really have time to play some PC games).

In both my laptop and desktop I spend most of my time in Ubuntu now.

Dunno, it does have its own section in the checklist. Anyway I installed Copernic and I'm using it on my desktop and laptop now. On my desktop it sits with GDS (yep I got both). On my laptop it replaced my GDS since I really don't like using a browser just to see my results. But I left the WDS in.

Shame the Google sidebar had to go though. I really liked it. But the Windows sidebar works I guess. Now I need to figure out how to control Windows indexing frequency.

I don't mind GDS.. I just hate how it requires to open a browser to see the results. And Google Desktop Extreme doesn't work that well (a front end for the search results).

At the link you provided there's no checkmark for the Vista search (which is what my laptop has). Would it still be compatible?

I have a question (for anyone that's used Beagle in Linux). Is there a "Beagle" for Windows? By that I mean something like Beagle. I like how I can search and it shows the results in its window split up by pictures, music, documents, etc..

I use Google Desktop Search and Windows Desktop Search right now. WDS is pretty close to what I want. But I can't remember why I don't use it (indexing TB emails maybe?). I remember there was a reason why I installed GDS on there..

best linux software ever :)

Other than that... Opera (which doesn't feel quite right under linux, though), firefox (which i usually use on linux, although i prefer opera on windows). There's also a jukebox which is pretty good, but i can't recall its name.

Rhythmbox? Or Amarok? They're both awesome music players that remind me of jukeboxes.

You can't use Subsonic w/o Tomcat. It's an application built for Tomcat. Though once you set it up you just access it using localhost:8080 in a web browser.

Usually doesn't benefit from dual core (or suffer usually). That's pretty much. Though with emulators it's pretty funny cause they'll run at an extremely fast rate that you can't even see anything. Though that's why you activate the framerate limiter lol.

Tried it and I couldn't get it to work. Play, Pause, Stop, none of it would work. I fired up google (ah..yes the next corporation of doom) and found this.

To me..mostly yeah. XP's was pretty good. Vista's is terrible (why the heck they decided to contain it in the start menu area is beyond me). Luckily I have FARR and other programs that can launch them without having to enter it.

Hmm..for the music server part you could install Tomcat (from Apache) and Subsonic (music server program). Not sure if it has all the features you ask for, since I use it to listen to the music on my desktop when I'm away from home. Or in another room with my laptop. But if it doesn't you could always ask on the subsonic forum for those features.
