General Software Discussion / Security on shared computers
« Last post by imtrobin on May 31, 2007, 11:02 PM »
Hi

I like to discuss about various security measures which should be done when accessing sensitive websites on untrusted computers, which is usually true when using computers or network while on the road.

What I'm thinking is to use Torpark to secure the browser, but this does not defend against keyloggers. On wikipedia which describes keyloggers, there are interesting ways to defeat keyloggers, like using a web based keyboard

http://en.wikipedia....ki/Keystroke_logging

What are some of the ways you use to surf securely on the road?

I would disable AutoPlay asap. Virus from thumbdrives, portable harddisks, etc are able to spread when autoplay is enabled.

« Last post by imtrobin on May 08, 2007, 11:30 PM »
Hi,

I'm looking for a cd autorun creator authoring program. I used to use this freeware but I'm looking for something more professional. Are there any recommendations?

After trying many (years ago), XNews is realyl one of the best, although it's difficult to setup compared to others.

Is it a logitech? I had similar problems years ago, it's a driver issue. Nowdays I don't install their drivers, and everything's fine.

I agree. I chose Emeditor Pro, and it's really good and he's responsive to support. Thanks and welcome, Mr Yutaka

IntelliComplete. Pity it's sort of abandoned, and there are outstanding bugs.

I tried FungusTab, it's nice but it doesn't implement the tabbed container yet. I mailed to the author about this idea and he replied he's quite busy so I don't we will see any updates in a while.

I'm also seeing the exceptions when I click on the menu bar. Using mmm+ too for a long time, never seen such problems.

I find www.bitdefender.com better. I use AVG 6  before, it didn't manage to detect a virus that is zipped within a zip.

Hardlinks are only useful for files in the same partition. If they are on different partition, the file is still copied on both sides.

General Software Discussion / Replacing shortcut target by target
« Last post by imtrobin on May 03, 2006, 02:17 PM »
Hi, I have a situation with shortcuts and looking for recommendations for software/ways to solve it.

I have a folder containing lots of shortcuts (in multiple sub folders). Now, I want to remove the shortcut and copy the shortcut target to the shortcut location instead. How can I accomplish this?

I've looked around but all I found is is able get the shortcut target one at a time. My shortcuts may link to other folders, so ideally would copy the folder too.

Ps. I can't use hardlink because the shortcut points to different drives.

Now I know why Xnews is such a pain in the butt... but I still use it.

thanks, I will give your settings a try.

The caret only works on simple editbox. Try Emeditor from  www.emeditor.com and see if that works. That doesn't work for me.

Regarding the restart problem, my encounter is the prompt stops showing up and I have to restart to get it to show up. i have it set to floating mode (not docked), following cursor. What are your settings? In the yahoo mailing list, I read someone with similar behaviour so I'm not alone..

this may be a ripe category for a freeware/donationware alternative..  maybe harrie can tell us about what a perfect tool for this would look like, and try to think if there are any features that are missing in these tools that would be nice to have.

It will be good if you will have time to code this up. I have been looking at  these types of applications before, only IntelliComplete is the best.

Speed typing are split into three categories - text expander,  text correction, and text completion.

Text Expander - Many programs of these types around. Idea is using a id to expand into a full sentence. e.g type "fyi" will expand to "For Your Information"

Text Correction. One example is AsUType http://www.asutype.com/
. It corrects the word while you type. Useful but not as useful as text completion.

Text Completion - This is where IntelliComplete is different from other programs. It predicts the text based on dictionary. Example, you type 'he', then it will present 'hell', hello', helicopter' etc. It also offers text expander.

The only problem with IntelliComplete it has a threading bug which causes it to stop working after a few hours and it's caret detection doesn't work well with all programs.

The similar programs I have seen are

http://www.clasohm.com/lmt/en/
http://www.wamasoft.com/autotyping/

However, their speed and memory usage are not as good IntelliComplete, though they don't suffer from the same bugs.

If you can replicate IntelliComplete without the bugs, it will be excellent. For your information, they have their autocomplete editor at

I don't like the idea you have to connect to their servers. Is there one without connection to third party servers?
