I took the liberty of compiling everything listed in the thread into one reg file (and one to reverse the changes)

features:
works on windows 7 (should work the same on both x86 and x64) dunno if it does anything on xp, may or may not work on vista
works with rightclicking on a blank area of the directory
works with rightclicking on a drive or directory
shift+rightclicking adds the additional option of "Open administrator command window here"

actually no, i opened the page in IE8, right clicked the image and went to properties, and the link to the jpeg was right there, a simple copy/paste [enter] loaded the image just fine

i have seen similar behavior to this with a few of my CSS "protected" dvds, i get about 2/3s to 3/4s through the movie and it will hit a bad block or something and the movie will start displaying green video corruption all over the place, and after a little while it simply refuses to play at all (or in one instance actually crashed my xbox1) and like you said, trying to skip ahead does nothing.

i did some looking into the problem and it seems to be either a disc read error that happens precisely at the right spot to mess up the CSS or something is wrong with the CSS encryption itself, because if i remove the CSS and put it on a dvd-r, the same video plays beautifully in whatever player i put it in. while doing that i noticed the disc took several tries to decode proplery leading me to believe there was something wrong with it (but i could not see any scratches whatsoever on the surface) it did decode after awhile however, but by the time it did your average dvd player would have given up (thus the bad video output)

the way to fix the 7-zip file associations problem is run the gui as administrator and set the file associations, then close that instance and you should be set
i ran into that problem myself, it seems that win7 will only let admin set file associations (also affects things such as media player classic)

i think the mention of best buy is in reference to this consumerist article. i came across it awhile ago. (more information by googleing 'best buy optimization scam')

also about the malware, yes i remove it from people's computers often, and you are lucky you didn't get one of the versions that hides in system restore so if you try to use it, it simply reinstalls the problem.

the popular ones at myspace/facebook/twitter are called "Koobface" - nasty stuff, look it up
i removed it from someone's computer, and they were using the UAC blackout screen to force her to break captchas for them or else the virus would shut down her computer in x amount of seconds (you can read about this specific part of it by looking up "captcha.dll")

if you want to read about a really scary microsoft technology google 'microsoft palladium', microsoft has done its best to remove all references about it from their site, but they can't remove it from other people's websites

well at least nobody has thought of a "you have to pay to uninstall" service yet
although some uninstallers might as well be:
a lot of antiviruses (not going to name any, but i think everyone knows which ones i mean) you have to get a special removal tool to get the darn things off your system, and improper removal will completely hose your system / network connection because they so heavily integrate themselves into your system that they might as well be a virus themselves

edit: free trial/download, with hidden text: "to remove this application from your computer you must pay a removal fee"

you should also not click on spam links because if they use http://www.example.com/filename?id=something&whatever=numbersandletters the parameters after the ? can be a unique identifier that links the click to your email address in their database backend, clicking the link confirms your existence = more spam

with quicksfv it will recurse through subdirectories and add all the files it finds to the sfv/md5 file, you just have to select the top-level directory. unfortunately as i said it dosen't seem to work with unicode filenames

i'm not sure if HashCheck has the same functionality, and i know quicksfv will not drop a checksum file in each subdirectory. i am sure someone here could program a unicode-compliant application for what you want, and if i had more time i'm sure i could do it myself

you might try HashCheck, i have heard good things about it, but i haven't tried it personally. it appears that it might do what you are looking for because it has several non-ascii language translations (and not supporting filenames in someone's native lanugage while having a language file would be silly) it also does more than just crc32/md5

i use quicksfv for verifying checksums, i believe it does unicode properly, the only drawback is it only does crc32/md5, does not do sha1 (yet?)

i wrote a web page once that would run google maps full screen, i even had it set as my active desktop wallpaper at one time (i know how horrible active desktop is, no need to remind me) and i had something that would overlay radar images on google maps. if i were to combine the two things i could probably make some kind of wrapper that would make it act like a screensaver. animating the radar would be possible as well, and auto updating it

it should in theory, but the licensing embedded in it may not work in normal virtual pc, or microsoft has disabled that feature on windows versions besides the ones that are supported

xp mode does not work on every version of windows 7, its pro, ultimate, and enterprise only (source, also the microsoft download page will tell you that your edition is not supported if you select something like home premium)

i recently played around with the vm image itself, and it is possible to get it working under other vm software (VMware/VirtualBox for example) and other editions of windows (xp/vista/7) with some modifications. i didn't try to get it working with Virtual PC, but i assme there is a way to get it working on any computer that is capable of running Virtual PC.
VMware does not impose the hardware virtualization requirement, but it does suggest that having it will make things faster

go here and download the "Windows XP Mode" file, you can use 7-Zip to unarchive the files from the exe, finding the vm image inside is somewhat complicated

you can use VMware Converter to make the image compatible with the free VMware Player, or VMware Workstation (not free)

changing the vm's license to be compatible with your computer is somewhat of a gray area and i won't post how to do that here

i really love CPU-Z, i use it on nearly every computer i own / work on  :D
other apps from cpuid i like are HWMonitor and PC Wizard

on this page it says you need another gig of ram on top of the minimum system requirements for xp mode. although i think you could run it with the minimum ram requirements (and they don't really enforce the ram requirement) i have found that if you are going to use the computer for anything serious that 1gb/32-bit 2gb/64-bit seems to be a reasonable amount of ram

sir you are entirely incorrect.

java is made by sun microsystems
javascript has nothing to do with sun microsystems (read the wikipedia article, you will be educated)

sun buying mysql is not what you have to worry about, what you have to worry about is oracle buying sun

edit: (and therefore oracle buying mysql)
edit2: from my experience exploits do like to use a combination of javascript/activex to do the dirty work, disable one and the other part of the exploit dosen't work right

javascript is not the same thing as java
java is made by sun microsystems
javascript is something entirely different

i really dislike it when people lump them together and don't make it clear that they are two different things
(wikipedia even says "Not to be confused with ..." at the top of their pages)

edit: the best thing to secure IE is to disable active scripting and all plugins, however this also has the effect of making a large part of the internet completely unusable (youtube for example)
edit2: a lot of malware is dependant on old versions of (adobe/macromedia) flash/sun java/adobe acrobat. making sure you have the latest versions of those plugins is always a good idea, and disabling javascript in adobe acrobat helps. also you could avoid acrobat entirely and go with foxit reader as i do  :P

need a cpu with hardware virtualization built in, when choosing a desktop/laptop look up the cpu
Here for intel processors and make sure it has Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x) = Yes
Here for amd processors and make sure it has Virtualization = Yes

edit: cpu-world also has information about many processors. my old acer aspire 9300 has a cpu that was made in '06 and has hardware virtualization. just shows you that some things that are compatible with xp mode, even from a few years ago

Description
What's my share lets you put in a total amount, a list of people and their percentages, and then it will calculate how much each person owes.
app thought i should enter a project for NANY 2010 and linked me to a post on the forums. I thought it would be easy to do and it ended up being a pretty fun project. A big thanks to mouser and the denizens of the donationcoder irc channel.

Features
  • Remember the last data entered in a cookie (except for IE, see known issues)
  • Add or remove rows
  • Format for printing with the option to add a title to the printout
  • Normalization (adjust all share totals proportionately so that they total 100%)
  • Clear All button
  • Use * to specify an equal share of the remaining amount
  • Warning displayed if percent is higher than 100%
  • Warning displayed if shares do not add up to the total amount

Planned Features
There are no additional planned features, but i might add some more if they are suggested.

Usage
Start by entering the total amount to be divided up between participants. Then add each person followed by their share percentage. As you fill in the values, the amount of their share will be calculated and displayed instantly.

Known Issues
Internet Explorer is unable to use the remember last data function because of issues with the json handling functions.

i have no money to spare right now
and yes, modded xboxes are wonderous things, i had it running a media center for a long time, but since i never used it i found that running linux with a webserver was a much better use

edit: you can actually run linux on a xbox 360 as well, but with a 54% failure rate i doubt i'd get a year out of it, much less three, and with such a short operational lifespan i don't think the amount of work required to get it running would be justified
