But yeah, it still has a long way to go. And this project is just an early 'proof of concept' piece to whet our appetites and get people thinking about how something like this could be effectively used.

This has massive potential! It's like a new HTML.

Way back, I thought the web was crap. Because it was. I should have paid more attention to the potential.

(Besides, doesn't the Necronomicon already work like that? You trace the diagrams with your index finger and read certain words in the text and...things...happen.)

I would love to work on that technology, but killing babies isn't one of my strong points. :P

Hello Angela,

Please never have children.

Thank you,

The sane portion of the computing world.

:P

But seriously -- I want a tablet computer that has all the power of my desktop that I can plug into an ARRAY of monitors and other peripherals. I want my computer to be portable. Right now, it isn't. And it sounds like a bloody helicopter! :P

However, at 4AM on a road trip away from your computer, when DC withdrawal hits, you have no choice!
I take your point, but trying to post a message from my phone feels a little like trying to spray paint a room through its keyhole.  :-[

HAHAHAHA~!;D

I LOVE the analogy~! :D

Hm, looks pretty interesting - but more of an artsy thing than something really useful - at least without a lot of further refinement. One obvious thing is that the cable should be replaced with bluetooth or similar... but it also seemed to me that there was a lot of pretty book-specific engineering? i.e., for a different layout or different content, you'd need both specific programming and engineering?

I guess I don't see a lot of situations where this would be genuine useful, though. Something about the different ways I use print and electronic media - I'd find it annoying that the electronic version flips when I flip the book... ho humm :)

Well, imagine it's put into a full publishing work flow, where the physical and digital books are produced together...

Now, when you buy your physical book, the digital one is already in it. You just plug your physical book into your computer, and you have access to this wonderful new world of interactivity, etc. etc.

This is to the physical/digital world what HTML was to flat text.

Pretty damn revolutionary. :D

No question about that, it's fascinating!

(If you've not tried using a phone for forum entries I'd strongly recommend against it  :()

When we were travelling a couple years ago, I'd go outside the hotel for a cigarette with my phone and read a few DC posts. Replying? Maybe one. And probably only a smilie.

Last time, earlier this year, I had my tablet, and still didn't reply much. I really do like full-sized, physical keyboards. Even the tiny keyboard for my Mac is annoying. It's probably great for children though.

Don't forget that computers are SSSSSSSSSSSSLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW..............................

Turning pages in an ebook is mind-bogglingly frustrating. Anything over 0.1 seconds to turn a page is just tooooooooooo slow.

Paper is FAST. You can flip from anywhere to anywhere far faster than you can with any electronic book.

Before I bought my tablet, I looked at the Kindle... I wanted to stab myself in the face because it would have been less painful.

PDF? Oh god! Save us! PDF is like the Anti-Christ of digital print in portable computing. It's not meant for portable computing - it's meant for print. And it shows.

MOBI and ePUB are far, far, far superior to PDF for mobile computing. They work. But they are still slow in comparison to paper.

The paper book there - you can flip through the pages and there you have it, then you can glance up at the slow computer for anything interactive.

It really is sort of a strange marriage of digital and physical, but it's just so darn cool~! :D You get the benefits of both media at the same time. Have you cake AND eat it~! :P Nom nom nom~! :P

It was sketchy at first- we'd been looking at their component suite at work, and though we decided not to go with them, I signed up for their list and saw these (and other things that they've released free, ie metro studio and smart git- smart git isn't apparently free to all, but metro studio still is at http://www.syncfusio...ownloads/metrostudio)

They kept calling me at the number - thankfully I'd given them my google voice number, so it kept going to voicemail, but it was annoying.  I called them to say so, and they stopped calling... but that left a bit of a bitter taste, so I never recommended them...

Yeah... I know what you mean. They're just trying damn hard to drum up business, but it's bloody annoying. Had a few of those calls myself.

Still, I have to give them credit for the free ebooks.

I would love to see a Venn diagram of what people here use for FF/Fx/whatever extensions. I loathe installing anything at all anymore for almost any reason, and really need to be CONVINCED to try something new now.

Developer's Corner / FREE Programming eBooks! (and a C++ book for C# devs)
« Last post by Renegade on September 08, 2012, 01:15 AM »
I just came across this:

https://www.syncfusi...resources/techportal

They have a bunch of free ebooks on programming topics, including a C++ one geared towards C# developers.

From the intro to that book:

Free forever

Syncfusion will be working to produce books on several topics. The books will always be free. Any updates we publish will also be free.

Free? What is the catch?

There is no catch here. Syncfusion has a vested interest in this effort.

As a component vendor, our unique claim has always been that we offer deeper and broader frameworks than anyone else on the market. Developer education greatly helps us market and sell against competing vendors who promise to “enable AJAX support with one click,” or “turn the moon to cheese!”

Gotta say, hats off to them for the super attitude that seems all to rare now. They've definitely earned a big, massive, huge +1 in my (e)books~! ;D

Anyways, thought I'd pass that along. Hope it's useful for someone.

I think it kind of just struck me as unexpected. I suppose that I expect the regular, run of the mill, let's attack a server, gain control, setup phishing pages, send spam, and all that crap.

This is a very different motivation.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: How to order clips in menu of virtual folder?
« Last post by Renegade on September 07, 2012, 04:24 AM »
I find the SQL stuff all very confusing. There's nothing in the help file to explain it.

Looking at the "Custom Menu Sorting SQL" field, I have this:

Ordering,ModificationDateTime

And I guess that it is supposed to be a WHERE clause, but I don't know what fields are available. The help file lists these:

Fields available for sql statements:

· Index
· UserKeywords
· ClipType
· ParentId
· ParentGroup
· OtherGroups
· Application
· Title
· Description
· ImageIndex
· ExcerptText
· ClipText
· CreationDateTime
· ModificationDateTime
· ViewDateTime
· MarkDateTime
· DueDateTime
· Image
· Thumbnail
· Blob
· IsFavorite
· UserFlag
· UserCheckbox
· UserRating
· Protected

But "Ordering" isn't in there. So, I'm not exactly certain how to use any of it.

For example, can I do this?

Ordering DESC, ModificationDateTime ASC

Or can we try some SQL injection?

Ordering; DROP TABL; -- :P

Oh, I should post this too:

There you can see that my "-2" priority is there at position #8 at the bottom. It's the same entry as you see in the screenshot above.

Click the thingy there:

Screenshot - 2012-09-07 , 6_11_04 PM.png

Then check "Ordering":

Screenshot - 2012-09-07 , 6_11_21 PM.png

Then type the PRIORITY in the "Ordering" column (shown in first screenshot above). That is, the priority towards the top of the context menu, i.e. higher numbers go at the top, while lower (or negative) numbers go at the bottom.

Yeah Ren, I have seen the video a couple of times, it's been around for years! Hence my comment.

But meanwhile about the bigger forces, cue all the TV cop procedurals painting those size forces as nicer too. (Though of course that's all propaganda!)

Blah... I read that you saw it, and forgot. Very often I open up videos that people recommend, but don't get around to watching them for a few days, and posted thinking maybe you did the same. Just me with my brain falling out there. :(

Kind of OT - about cop shows, etc.

I remember when the TV show "Cops" came out. I simply couldn't watch it. I saw a couple, and it just seemed so dumb to watch. What a complete horror show the way it helped pave the way for reality TV... :(

I can't even stand to watch any cop/crime dramas anymore. Well, with a couple exceptions. The constant propaganda just gets to me now and gives me an icky feeling when watching it.

I think one of the worst is CSI: Miami. I would totally watch a show of that if the main characters were all killed off. They simply represent some of the lowest scum. My main issue there is how they blatantly break the law in vicious ways, but somehow these are still the "good guys". As if we're supposed to swallow that. It's a sick story. However, I'd separate that from shows like "The Shield" where there's no pretense of the cops being "good guys".

It's the message that "it's ok for police to murder people because there's the 'good guys' and you need to shut up and trust them" which I find sickening.

Living Room / Cyber Attack on Nutrition Site?
« Last post by Renegade on September 06, 2012, 11:23 PM »
A health & nutrition site that I like was recently attacked.

http://naturalsociet...-piece-cyber-attack/

Essentially, it was the first piece to really respond to the outlandish hit piece with a serious response. It may come as no surprise to many of you, then, to know that we were hit with a massive attack between the early morning hours of September 4th (as the piece really began to gain traction) and the night of the same day. Hit by a complicated series of denial of service attack (known as a DDoS attack) resulting in a complete server crash, we did our best to trace the location and halt the intrusion.

It sounds like the only purpose was to silence the site and not like any typical attacks that you'd get from spammers and the like.

You know, I've seen that "don't talk to cops" video, but I do believe that such a mentality can be more dangerous sometimes than actually talking to the cops. The brief summary is, you have to know the "mood" of the cops in your area. Cops are not "faceless Agent Smiths". Every town/city has a "mood". So the exact same words/actions by you in one area could work perfectly in one place, and get you squashed the next town over. Amazingly, it's the "people factor" that's the deal here.

If one town has "Chief Jim" who is just awesome, and his staff is more or less rational and okay, then just talk to them when they pull you. If one town has "Evil Chief B. East" , and a judge in his pocket, getting too "uppity" is what will get him grumpy and he'll write you a ticket out of spite.

Well, I think there that the key word is "town". Small towns are very different to big cities. Chances are that you know someone who knows the cop or his family. In a big city, fat chance. So, it's probably geared more towards the "facelessness" of large police forces, etc. etc.

Those areas where people actually know each other (or to put a spin on that - where people have more humanity towards each other) are probably much safer to talk to police in.

I think the one thing that that doesn't matter is if you are arrested - then I think they're right about everything there.

Did you have time to watch the video? They really have some seriously good stuff there.

Another thank you! :)

It reminds me of this lecture:

Don't Talk to the Police

It's a lawyer and a detective telling you WHY you should NEVER talk to the police.

It goes hand in hand with Debunking the Dangerous "If You Have Nothing to Hide, You Have Nothing to Fear", as Deozaan linked to.

However, it REALLY goes into a LOT more depth.

I'd highly recommend that video for anyone remotely interested, and for those that aren't, he's pretty funny, so you'd get a laugh out of it anyways. (Seriously -- the guy is a complete riot! It's almost a comedy routine!)

Basically, it's that use/abuse/surrender/coercion of information that these things all approach from one direction or another.

Ah... I see... It's a priority for placement at the top of the list, and not an "order". So, the largest number that I use gets #1 placement in the context menu.
