General Software Discussion / Re: Dumb question re Website Watcher
« Last post by Darwin on August 24, 2007, 08:19 PM »
I use a similar application to monitor sites for changes - job postings sites, software development sites (to be alerted about updates/new releases), blogs, etc. Website Watcher won the website change monitoring tool award in the donationcoder review. Read the review - it'll give you a lot of ideas as to how to use this application.

Best Dialog Extender / Re: PowerDesk Pro's Dialog Helper
« Last post by Darwin on August 24, 2007, 08:13 PM »
Enhanced File Dialog - go to your start menu and look for Stardock (or Object Desktop) and then look for the Enhanced File Dialog folder. You should be able to open up its interface and tweak it from there. The biggies are the shortcuts down the lefthand side (forget what it's called offhand) - you can do wonderful things there, and then it gives you the option to resize your dialogs, add various folders to parts of the dialog, etc. One thing to note, though, is that many of these extenders DO NOT WORK in MS Office. Best way to see if EFD is working is to open up, say, notepad and then hit ctrl-o... It's worth configuring. Personally, I think Stardock should release it as a standalone but I am assured that they will not. I think it's the best extender out there...

Living Room / Re: What's the most complicated wristwatch?
« Last post by Darwin on August 24, 2007, 06:51 PM »
Well... in the horological sense, "complication" relates more to what can be achieved mechanically (ie with a spring driven geartrain as opposed to digitally). It actually refers to "a mechanical feature beyond the simple hours, minutes, and seconds movement." The Vacheron et Constantin complication that Superboyac originally posted about is mechanical and features 17 complications including a minute repeater, sunset time, perpetual calendar, second time zone, a tourbillon device, the equation of time and the representation of the night sky. Only 7 were made and retailed for $1.5 million each (chump change!).

Now, how about the most complicated pocket watch? The Patek-Phillipe Calibre 89

expensive-pocket-watch.jpg

featuring 33 complications. Don't know the price, but the watch from the 30's that inspired it, a one-off built for a NY Banker sold at auction for $11 million... I'll take two (oh, except that there's only one. Details).

Here are the complications that the calibre 89 features:

Day of the month
12-hour recorder
Day of the week
Hour of second time-zone
Moon phase display
Winding crown position indicator
Century decade and year displays
Leap Year Indicator
Power reserve
Month
Thermometer
Date of Easter
Time of sunrise
Equation of time
Star chart
Sun hand
Time of sunset
Split second hand

PS sells for over $6 million. At these firesale prices, I'll take three(assuming they made more than one)!

Cool. Dialog Helper coexists nicely with Enhanced File Dialog ( :-* - my favourite dialog enhancer courtesy of Stardock's Object Desktop and I can "configure out" the redundancies. I like the ability to add File Previews. Also, the Edit Note feature is kind of nifty. It's a bit like tagging. This is certainly not going to replace with DOpus or XYplorer, but it's nice to have around.

After all, there's no smoke without the 'f' word.

So this is the security software thread??? shouldn't there be seperate threads for different classes of security?

No, the OP was looking for opinions and advice about security so we've been posting in here... There isn't really a "security" sub-forum, though it's not a bad idea!

The recomendation part, I must try. Looks like my previous favorite, MusicIP, is half dead, no new features added in over 2 months. andd now, I added a few CDs, just to discover that most of them are unanalyzable. When did things go this wrong?

Whicken posted this a few days ago (Aug.17):
Just a quick notice - I will have somewhat limited internet access for the next week (or perhaps none at all). So apologies up front if there is an extra delay in responding to posted messages.

We've got a lot of cool stuff in the pipeline, just hang in there.

PCMag has just reviewed to BitDefender Total Security 2008. The review is very comprehensive and concludes:

BitDefender Total Security 2008 is a clear improvement over last year's model, even if you just consider the features present in both. Antispam accuracy is way up, the firewall is tougher, and BD is more effective against spyware. In addition, you now get a full-featured local backup module as well as a first attempt at a performance tune-up module, all wrapped in a completely updated, friendly user interface. If you have an allergy to Norton and ZoneAlarm, this is a worthwhile alternative.

Having skimmed the review, I wouldn't call it a rave, but it (the suite) comes across as very solid and dependable.

General Software Discussion / Re: my system has stopped following shortcuts (!)
« Last post by Darwin on August 24, 2007, 11:43 AM »
I'd look in the registry (I use Resplendent Registry Manager to do this - it has an awesome search function) for references to both these apps and see if there is anything about shortcuts. I'll bet there are and that they're set to look in either the wrong or a non-existent partition and, because they're not finding what they're looking for, not doing anything. This is what I had to resort to doing to fix my computer when I had a similar problem related to changed a partition label.

Of course, this assumes that you're comfortable modifying your registry. Make sure you export any keys that you edit (before you edit them!).

Oh - forgot this little nugget: if you don't know what card you've got (which can be a problem when you are looking to update drivers), download SIW - it's a freeware system profiler and an excellent one at that!

Hi whicken - welcome back to donationcoder and nice to see you again. I've posted about the icons issue in the MusicIP Mixer forum (but didn't post about my sysem there, either - I'll do that now).

Out of curiosity, have you changed the label for the partition recently (I recall from other threads that you wanted to get rid of a partition). Anyway, the reason I ask is that even if you request that your partition management software redirect shortcuts and so on if it is re-assigning partition labels, it ofen misses key assignments. This happened to me a year ago when reassigning my data partition's label. I'd check a random shortcut's path to make sure it's pointing to e:\... and not f:\... or g:\...

Just a shot in the dark. Good luck!

Sort of a postscript to my post about the icons... I wanted to post in the MusicIP Mixer forums but couldn't upload my picture there. I'm about to upload to imageshack and try again. Hopefully, I'll get the help I need (?!) from the people that are best positioned to give it to me  ;D

EDIT: Also, sorry for so shamelessly hi-jacking this thread   :-[

Good morning, Dan! By "Have no way to remove Broadcom" do you mean that you id'd it in the Control Panel/Program Files folder/running processes? If so, there's two thing to try:

-If the Control Panel applet is there (for Broadcom), try using either it or the Broadcom utility itself to disable the Broadcom utility from configuring you wireless connection.
-Alternative, try unchecking "Use Windows to Configue my wireless network settings" (top of the tab in your second screenshot, earlier post) and see if you are still connected afterward. You *might* have to reboot to see if this works. If it does not, go back to that tab and re-check the option (and unfortunately, probably have to reboot again... but give it a minute in both instances before rebooting - sometimes it just take time).

I would've thought a bigger concern would be how long it would take to UPLOAD your FLAC files!  :D

No - hadn't heard of it before reading your post. Have you tried it? If so, what are your thoughts? What are its resource utilization figures like (how much RAM/Virtual Memory/CPU does it require)? Just curious. I'm always on the look out for a better media player. Currently using WMP 11 and MusicIP Mixer. Have also dabbled with GOMPlayer (it's very good actually - I use it to watch DVDs - it's completely supplanted Intervideo WinDVD 8 Platinum).

Ha ha... that was one of my pet peeves about Cirond Winc, too. It insisted (despite my telling it to do otherwise a variety of ways, not least of which in its options dialog) on starting maximized. My mother in law consistently closed it on system start and then came to me to fix the Internet (if Winc isn't running it disables the wireless card - at least under Win2k). The D-Link utility is quite good, too.
