Found Deals and Discounts / Re: ShellLess file manager
« Last post by Curt on April 16, 2009, 03:13 AM »
ShellLess Explorer has been updated to version 1.2.4. I went to their page to look for What's New, but didn't find anything. Instead I came across this standard rebate offer I didn't know about:

Academic Use - Up to 50% off!

If you are an educator or student, we offer great discounts for you as well.

In order to qualify for an academic discount, you must submit the following information before the discount can be provided:

    * Student's name
    * Name of School
    * School Address

The academic discount is only intended for non-commercial use only.

App Name:Super Flexible File Synchronizer, soon to be renamed ExtremeSync

- for two years they have not yet launched the Extreme thing. So, how is the company going in general? Are they bug fixing and feature updating and such? Does anyone know?

- that was a terrible experience, Carl ~ my deepest sympathy!

However, most support is given via  http://www.anvir.com...um/viewforum.php?f=4 , not per email.

Also, I can plug and unplug my drives as I want to; no reaction from Task Manager Pro!

Finally:
I just *looove* Process Explorer and am using this, not Task Manager Pro, instead of Vista's task manager.

AnVir Security Suite is first and foremost a fantastic task manager, and only then a... a task manager! It is by no means to be confused with a stand-alone anti-virus program!

I have a copy of AnVir Task Manager PRO and in many areas I think it is even better than Process Explorer! Way to go! So when my license for NOD32 ran out I was asking AnVir for a upgrade price to their security suite because the advert said that the (only) difference between the task manager pro and the security suite is "Antivirus scanner. Anti-rootkit tool." (and the price). But the answer from AnVir simply said:

Hello,

I can give you a link to upgrade.
But actually AnVir Security Suite is not an antivirus, it detects only most popular viruses.
So I would recommend you to choose another antivirus, for example Avast or AVG which are free for home use.

AnVir Software

So there you have it, straight from the horse's mouth.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Paragon Drive Backup 9 Special Edition For Free!
« Last post by Curt on April 08, 2009, 06:46 PM »
Within the last ten years I have experienced several black screens at startup, but only twice have I seen the BSOD. Do 'rememeber' that this only is my fifth private personal computer. All the other computers were owned by companies, so I was never allowed to do anything but my job. This goes all back to when a computer in Danish was called an "edb" machine ~ translates into 'electronic data handling' ~ and  Yes, back then I saw many blue screens, due to power fall-outs etcetera, but that was long before Windows NT,, which I didn't care to explain on GOTD.

... I wish I had a faster interface to external drives.  Laying the image back on from an external USB @25 MB/sec is a bit like watching paint dry.

- I know what you mean; I once watched 40 GB video files changing their address at 5 MBps!
Why is it that USB cable packages are stamped with "480 MB/s"???

I scanned the folder, and Outpost kept saying it was malware (or spyware?, I forgot). I told about it to both Photo Pos and Agnitum, but I seriously expect nothing to happen - they have both known about this problem for several years. In your situation I *think* I would keep the attitude that the file is harmless - thanks to the answers from your google link.

- MoleBox seems not to be a file, but a sequence in how the exe file was packed which should be typically for malware. or something.

- thanks, MilesAhead. However, I have both R-Drive Image and Backup4all Pro 4, but don't really like any of them. I have tested many backup'ers but have not yet found the one to love. So I want to test Paragon 10, because MAYBE this is the one!

Just a tiny and maybe useless info:

Paragon may have their "Offerer Identification"-office in Irvine, California, but:

§ 7    Further Terms:

2. This agreement is governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of Germany.

3. Concerning contracts with merchants, commercial companies, public legal entities and legal separate estates under public law, as well as in those cases where the customer, who is not a consumer, does not have his/it's general jurisdiction within Germany, the court located in Müllheim, Germany shall have jurisdiction to hear the disputes arising under this agreement.
-Terms and Conditions of the Beta Test Agreement

---

On another matter:
Do 'we' know for how long this beta offer has been active? Before joining I would of course like to get an idea about how dangerous it may be to test it.

I wouldn't be without this!

- XP only, I assume:

What's New
Latest Version 4.39 / April 6th, 2007

But there is a link to recently updated beta versions:

- maybe these versions are Vistable?

That is a release to hear, kartal! My reason for doubting was, that my music supplier packs the audio files in zip containers, and I have at least one or two containers corrupted per  download session (20~40 containers, 200~800 audio files)!

General Software Discussion / Re: Name The Best UNZIPPER!

Shortly after I started this thread, I made the switch from XP to Vista. And because of the 'new' way Windows is handling zip containers, I felt no need for anything else than 7-Zip, and Vista itself. But it may of course be true what kartal is telling, that an unpacking 7-Zip sometimes trips when it really shouldn't. So far I was thinking that it probably was because the zip containers included errors, but due to kartal's post I now realize that it may be because of 7-Zip itself! Hmm...!?

Does 7-Zip corrupt containers, when unpacking?  :tellme:

- thanks for the recommendations, Lutz_. At a total of £222 I would expect DrawPlus and PagePlus to be user-friendly, first class programs, £60 of that price being the manuals!!! Well, it is good that the company is making thorough manuals at all. And still, £222 is merely a fraction of the price for the "comparable" specialists programs from, say, Adobe CS4.

General Software Discussion / Any recommendations for Serif PhotoPlus X2 ?
« Last post by Curt on April 02, 2009, 07:58 AM »
Today's offer at Bits du Jour is Serif PhotoPlus X2 for $50 against the normal $80. It can however NOT be downloaded and tested before purchase, and I am totally not going to purchase it unless I know a lot more about it! So I was hoping some of you guys and dolls will tell what you know about & think of PhotoPlus X2, please.
 :tellme: icon_question.gif

Maybe I should add that I have a license for the older PhotoPlus 11, but never cared to install that version on my Vista (if it even can?). But of course I expect X2 to be a lot better.

http://www.bitsdujou.../software/photoplus/

Edited:
My original question was too easy to ask and too difficult to answer. I have watched the video about X2 (on http://www.serif.com/photoplus/) and am of course impressed with the features. My question is more if you think it is easy to use, and worth the money. Does it have a context menu in Explorer? Can I easily batch resize a folder of images? Stuff like that, etc.

Edit2:
Hmm... I finally found what Bits du Jour should have offered: a link to the manual! http://www.serif.com...pdfs/PhotoPlusx2.pdf  I expect it will answer my questions.
