General Software Discussion / GiveawayOfTheDay now has a freeware section
« Last post by app103 on January 09, 2007, 03:34 AM »
Happy New Year!

Here goes our present for you, dear visitors and members of Giveaway of the Day!
Today we launched a new project at giveawayoftheday.com: freeware library. We worked hard to make it handy and also to filter out all that disgusting adware/spyware that some developers call “free”.

This project seems to be a good addition to our site: missed some cool giveaway? Check out similar free software in our library using convenient tags. Don’t think today’s giveaway is useful for you? That’s sad, but check out today’s freeware updates, maybe you`ll like some of them?

Also I guess lots of freeware geeks we know for their comments (;-)) will try this toy to compare our giveaways and similar freeware stuff.

And they are accepting PAD files for freeware, if you have anything you would like to submit.

Freeware library is here:  http://www.giveawayo...theday.com/freeware/

and if you would like to leave and/or read any comments about this, you can do that here: http://blog.giveaway...library-is-launched/

There is a discussion in the comments about some of the stuff in their freeware library being bundled with spyware by the original developers of the programs offered (the GiveAwayOfTheDay people didn't do it).

You might want to read the comments on that page before you download anything, and be careful. If you spot something not so nice, be sure to comment there and let them know about it so they can investigate and get the crapware off their site.

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / Intensive Care for the Nurturer's Soul
« Last post by app103 on January 09, 2007, 02:55 AM »
There are some really great articles on this site for those that are interested in changing their lives, improving themselves, and reaching goals.

It is targeted at women, but there is no reason why her writings wouldn't help men, too.

I am a Professional Life Coach and the founder of Beyond Horizon Coaching, a nationwide coaching and training company specializing in helping nurturing women practice Intensive Self-Care, and providing solutions for Nurturing Burnout, Work/Life Balance, and Stress Management. Prior to becoming a Professional Life Coach, I've been a Registered Nurse, college counselor, assistant director of a nonprofit health care foundation, small business owner, full-time working mom, stay-at-home mom, etc. Having been a "nurturer" all my life, and having experienced the Nurturing Burnout myself, it is my passion to empower women nurturers to practice Intensive Self-Care, achieve Work/Life Balance, and create a life they truly desire.

General Review Discussion / Re: Review suggestions
« Last post by app103 on January 08, 2007, 04:09 PM »
How about an in depth review of desktop search applications?

There are quite a few out there, not just Google's. I'd like to see how they stack up.

I'd do it myself, but I am not an experienced desktop search user and my idea of good would be anything better than the standard built-in Windows files & folders search.  :-[

I am also obsessivly organized and don't often have to search for things on my pc, because I already have them where they would make perfect sense.

But the few times I do need to search for something, it's a brutal hell for me.

It would be nice to know that I could install something rated the best by a totally disorganized but experienced user of desktop search tools.  ;D

Anybody up for the challenge?

BASIC: Beyond All Sense, Incomprehensible Crap. Donald Knuth, iirc, has quote where "BASIC" and "brain damage" go together. Yes, fortunately today's BASICs are less hideous than the original ones, but it's not something you should touch unless you have to (ie., VB required for a job).

I haven't touched BASIC in 27 years, and I am still scarred by it. For whatever reason, my first instinct is still to think in BASIC code rather than whatever language I am working in. And I am not referring to VB either...I am talking about that BASIC stuff they taught in schools back in 1980.  :-[

Thank you so much app for pointing this site out to me, I've found it to be just the inspiration that I've been looking for to help get out of the rut that I feel I've been in lately, and to make some major improvements in my lifestyle.  Highly recommend for anyone looking to do more positive things in and with their life.

You can get PadGen here. It is a free tool for simplifying the creation of .pad files.

While you are there picking that up, take a look at other pages on the site. There is a wealth of info there about pad files, and even a huge list of links to download sites that will accept them.

The screenshots show EXACTLY what I am using it for. It is sitting in my tray with those settings.  :D

I had a digital post-it note with an alarm set to go off hourly, but the sound it made was a little tinkling bell which rings only once and it shows a tiny little flashing clock in the bottom right corner of my screen...small like a 16x16 icon... just a little red dot.

It was much too easy to ignore. I need something much louder and more obnoxiously in my face for it to be effective, especially if I have stepped away from my pc for something.

My daughter's new camera takes video but the files are .mov.

She is in need of a very easy to use freeware converter that will convert the files to MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) for uploading to youtube. (not for burning to dvd)

She isn't very patient or knowledgeable with computers so it would have to be something very easy to use. (think of what you would suggest to the average grandma that hasn't used a pc for anything except email, IM, and web surfing)

Living Room / Re: Learn How to create No-CD Cracks.
« Last post by app103 on December 28, 2006, 02:07 AM »
I have used Paragon for a long time to avoid having to put data cd's in the drive on my P1. (stupid ancient drive doesn't like reading data cd's any more)

I create the images on another pc and swap a hard drive to copy them over to the P1.

This has worked well for most normal stuff, but I am not a gamer and I don't have anything with copy protection.

The only disk I have ever had a problem with using with Paragon is a clipart gallery/database that the software it uses still looks to the first listed cd drive for the full size images...but it does that in a normal pc too, if you put the real disk in the second cd drive.

This guy is on their runners up list for ergonomic mice, and will be arriving at my home in a few days. (a Giftmas gift from a very generous person!)  :-*

I am really looking forward to it, as I am developing a very sore spot on my wrist where it rubs against my desk. (had to toss my mousepad with the wrist rest about a year ago because it was causing serious skin damage on same spot.)

How about standing outside somewhere and just handing them out for free...U of I sounds like the perfect place, since all the Girls of Engineering are from there.

Don't you think students would like a free calendar...especially with girls they might actually have a chance at seeing in real life, unlike the models in most calendars?

Maybe even get a few of the girls themselves to hand them out...autograph them too.

It would probably work especially well if it could be part of some already professionally planned and scheduled New Years Eve festivity, and have all the girls there to autograph and hand out calendars at some event.

You don't have much time to arrange something like that so start looking to see what is scheduled already and see if you can get in on it and let the event organizers do all the promoting...and call all the girls and ask them if they would be willing to participate.

See what is scheduled for First Night in your area, and check if you can be a part of it.
