- oh, I didn't know. Most likely because I don't have IrfanView as my default viewer, so its always right-click > Open With....

For convenience I have Microsoft Office Picture Manager 2003 as default; it is by far the fastest to use when I need to crop or resize an image.

... (for example: XnView has been stealing/cloning features and whole dialogs from IrfanView, for 7+ years).
-Steven Avery (April 23, 2008, 09:29 AM)

One thing XnView did not steal is the full Unicode support. XnView is wonderful in many ways, but I find it embarrassing how many file name characters it cannot handle. Characters that Microsoft and IrfanView will handle without any problems. Just one example: "ما ذكرفرحتن حتى من by _ ♥ ~ β@ЯβŸÄĦ ~ ♥ _.jpg" will not open in XnView. If I try to remove the problem-causing characters, one by one, I'll have to shorten the name to "by_@_.jpg"!!! >Western Only< may not be a problem to Americans etcetera, but to me it has been a problem a little too often.

Edit: 'Latin' replaced with 'Western'.

Coming up on BitsDuJour is a PDF editor called e-PDF: http://www.bitsdujou....com/software/e-pdf/

- I don't think it can edit the pdf's original text, only add new text.
4855
I found something that claims to do multiple search-and-replace within PDFs: PDF Text Replace Tool but it needs both MS Framework 2.0 and Visual C++ , and costs $49.  I was baffled by the Visual C++ requirement, which only appears when you try to install it, it's not obvious on the Web site.  Because I don't have Visual C++ and don't know what's involved in it, I didn't proceed any further.

The good part is that PDF Text Replace Tool can be integrated with your own application. See http://pdfmagus.com/...40&sid=0&l=1

Editing Products

Infix - seamless editing of PDF text, search & replace, plus a host of other facilties
Infix Pro - Search & replace across files plus integration with Infix Server
Infix Server - high-volume PDF editing and imposition for production environments.

They say:

Simply Edit Any PDF

Most PDFs just contain fragments of text - just a few words at a time. Other PDF editors allow you to edit each fragment individually.

Infix is the only PDF editor that intelligently re-creates the original content so that you can edit it in the way you would expect. It uses a set of intelligent algorithms to recreate the original structure of the document. This means you can edit a PDF just like you would a Word document.

Nothing comes close to Infix in the arena of PDF editing! Try it and you will agree!
(- the download link is for the standard version, for Windows.)
- but I haven't yet been able to reproduce such search & replace. Maybe because the file I was using, originally was OCR scanned. I must remember to test this feature more thoroughly. Maybe in the week-end.
4857
- then Infix definite is too expensive!

4858
- the entire document in a single search??? Or page per page, like Infix?
4859
I don't know what Adobe it$elf can do, but I have never come across a pdf editor that could handle a pdf file as if it was one big text file. Nor can Infix; it will find & replace within the selected text on the one actual page, only.

X3 and "the others" are, like Mike said, desktop publishers, only, not pdf text editors.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Gizmo gives us Titan Backup for free
« Last post by Curt on May 22, 2009, 04:35 PM »
- problem solved, so to speak. Titan Backup has officially died and been replaced by GFI.

read https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=18395.0

Dear Titan Backup user,

We would like to inform you of some important changes to Titan Backup.

GFI Software has been working with Titan for some time and has made significant investments in the technology, which it has now re-launched under GFI. GFI will continue making major investments in this technology.

We would like to inform you that GFI Backup 2009 – Home Edition has now been launched. This version is being offered as full-featured FREEWARE for PC home users.

GFI Backup has retained all the functionality you are accustomed to in Titan Backup and also includes additional feature and improvements*. We invite you to try out GFI Backup 2009 – Home Edition, which you can download from: http://www.gfi.com/backup-hm.

Please note that you cannot back up with the Titan Backup version and restore with the GFI version. Also, you cannot import your settings from Titan Backup to GFI Backup, as there have been major changes to the configuration file formats.

You therefore need to install GFI Backup and reconfigure, as follows: Download and use GFI Backup 2009 – Home Edition, and run a new back up of your existing files, re-creating your backup and synchronization tasks as needed. We highly recommend this option.

Alternatively, if you choose to back up with your Titan Backup product or you need to restore your files so they can then be backed up with GFI Backup you can:
Point    manually restore files backed up with the Titan Backup product; or
Point    use the latest build of the Titan Backup product (v2.5.0.117); to get this version, please email [email protected] – it is not available on the GFI website.
Both Titan Backup and GFI Backup can be installed on the same machine.

There will be no further development of the Titan Backup product. GFI Backup replaces this product and we will only enhance and maintain the GFI Backup product.

For support issues related to GFI Backup – Home Edition, please visit our support forums.

You can find more information about GFI Backup 2009 and other GFI products on our website: http://www.gfi.com/.

Thank you,
The GFI Software team

Support forum: http://forums.gfi.com/

*= Additional functionality offered by GFI Backup 2009 – Home Edition:

Point    On-demand check for product updates from GFI
Point    Support for Windows 7 RC build 7100

... if you can afford it  I will certainly recommend Infix for PDF editing.

Let me stress out that I recommend Infix for EDITING
- I have not yet tried to use it for the initial document creating.

And I don't recommend Infix for the daily PDF viewing!
4863
I was thinking about telling you how Infix is to use, but I have found my English vocabulary to be too tiny. But one thing I can tell you is, that I now have a license  and it was *GIVEN* to me by the author!

I have edited a couple of PDF files just for the fun of it. I really enjoy the WordPad-ish editing. A simple "-" will make long words break, and such. I don't know about the price, I think it is remarkable high (for an income like mine), but if you can afford it  I will certainly recommend Infix for PDF editing.

- oh, I (obviously) didn't understood that. There used to be some (for Win 2K and XP), but I have stopped taking interest in which may or may not have been updated for Vista, not to  mention Win 7, because my AnVir Task Manager Pro gives me all that. I don't know what features their free version will give you, if any.

You can't even run DM2 on Vista.

I expect PS HotFolders of course will be updated for Win 7, but it took the author for ever to update from XP to Vista, so I wouldn't wait for it to happen.

Piky Folders is a part of Conceptworld's Piky Suite and will be updated for Win 7.
4870
Can they be used as day-to-day pdf readers

- no, at least not INfix, as it loads much too slowly.
4871
I am surprised that noone has mentionned OpenOffice

- you really shouldn't be surprised, because this thread is about a pdf EDITOR.
4872
I should tell that SWREG/DigitalRiver right is offering PDF-XChange 4 Pro for $55 to their customers, compared to the listed $74. I have tested it, but 'something' was not working well in my setup - I have forgotten what it was.
4873
Serif PagePlus PDF 8 is a "funny" program. It is for desktop publishing, and you may save your job as a pdf file - hence the program's name. However, you cannot use PagePlus to edit or even to open a pdf file, as the only supported extensions are ppp, ppl and ppx!!

Download-lack-of-speed for 96½ MB setup file: 16.48 KB/s = 1:46 hour!

---

I have Ghostscript, and it was kind of funny to open a pdf file with IrfanView - I never would have thought of such combination.  I just don't need an editor, but the right one. INfix could be that one, if I somehow can get it a *LOT* cheaper than the listed $99/$299.
4874
... I can provide a link to an order form (for X2) that's prefilled with my name and address. Presumably you could just replace with your own info. (I'm not an affiliate or anything; I just have a saved email from a while back).

- nope!

Dear Curt

Thank you for your e-mail.

Please note that the e-mail offers we send to our registered customer are intended for their use only and are not meant to be passed or forwarded on to any other individual. In this instance, the offer you have applied for expired in March and as such it is no longer possible, even for our registered customers to purchase the programme at that price.

The e-mail links contained within the e-mail relate specifically to the customer and his/her account. As such, when placing an order using the links contained within the -mail, the order will automatically be placed under their account.

To avoid confusion, I have since cancelled this order and would advise that you register yourself as a Serif customer, subscribe to the e-mail offers so you can also receive offers similar to your friend.

It would be a lot easier to use some modern version of PrintDir or PrintFolder!

If I should choose to use (the very fine) albumprinter for my 2100 artist folders I would have to wait two or three days before the list is ready for print. And you never asked for a program to read your tags, did you - it will merely create a mess*. All you asked for was a program to print out what artists and albums you have, right? I will take that you have recorded your music in the same way I have: >%Music%>Artist>Album , or what? If So, the simple answer to your initial request is: PrintDir (anno 2009), setting: 'folders only', and you will have the answer in seconds, rather than in days!

-
"a mess*" = Inside the 10cc album The Very Best, are some tracks from Godley&Creme (former 10cc members), but because albumprinter (merely) is reading the tags it says I have an artist's folder named Godley&Creme. I don't, it is a 10cc album = a mess.
Come to think about it, you know there could many other examples like this.
