Weird.

I haven't seen that yet. But today I did see a little pop up text ad which was animated. So I guess it wasn't a text ad. It was more like those annoying GIF ad banners from ~12 years ago.

Living Room / Re: List your (wireless) router and experiences
« Last post by Deozaan on December 19, 2011, 06:57 PM »
I've only owned two wireless routers. My first one was a D-Link DI-624. It sucked.

Aside from the router sucking, I also bought a matching D-Link PCI wifi adapter for my PC and it was not compatible with my router. I got many BSODs on my XP machine when using my D-Link wifi adapter to connect to my D-Link router. I could connect my machine to other wifi networks without problems. I could connect to the D-Link router from my machine if I swapped in a different wifi adapter. For some reason the router and PCI adapter did not like each other. So I called D-Link Tech Support and described the problem ("I get BSODs when using the D-Link wifi adapter") and without asking any other pertinent questions or doing any troubleshooting I was told to take my PC to a local PC repair shop to get it fixed.

I will never buy D-Link again.

Now I own a Linksys/Cisco WRT160N V3 with DD-WRT. I like it. Though I can't comment on any of the Wireless N features since I don't have any Wireless N wifi adapters.

I had some reindeer sausage in September. It was yummy.

My guess (or hope, rather) about the letter is that this girl was being facetious when she wrote it. Some people just have (or go through a phase where they have) a macabre sense of humor but they mean no harm.

I have never noticed any video ads in YouTube. Only the little text ads that pop up about 10 seconds into the video and get in the way of everything. >:(

But I haven't been on YouTube for a few days.

If you're going to use a CSS mod, why not mod the CSS to make the ads tiny/invisible?

If you don't want to see the ads at all, an even better hack is to change all 3 of them to display:none !important;

Did that.  ;)

Aha. That's what I get for skimming instead of reading. :-[

Pretty sad (for AMD) that the 4-core Intel Core i7 2600K is better than the 8-core Bulldozer in most of those benchmarks. That's not to mention that the 6-core Phenom II is often better than the Bulldozer. What were AMD thinking?

Developer's Corner / Re: An iOS Developer Takes on Android
« Last post by Deozaan on December 16, 2011, 08:06 PM »
Things like this really make me dislike Apple users:

Apple has made it pretty easy to start writing iOS apps. Of course, Step One is “Buy a Mac.” Easy! Then just download the free Xcode Installer from the Mac App Store, and start writing code when it’s done.

Android is a bit more involved. You can download the SDK easily, but to actually start writing code, you’ll want to setup Eclipse and install Google’s ADT Plugin.

"Apple makes it so easy! Just spend $2,000 on a new computer and you're good to go after you download some free software! But Android is so hard because you have to download three separate free software packages. Boo hoo! Why does it have to be so hard to program for Android?"

I read the first book of Foundation years ago in my early teens.

I thought it was okay but kind of boring and pointless because IIRC the solutions to all the crises were all the same:

Spoiler
Do nothing because it was predicted to happen this way!

I started on the second book but after not getting much Sci-Fi satisfaction from the first, I didn't get very far into it before moving on to other books I was enjoying at the time. e.g. the Xanth series by Piers Anthony.

Living Room / Re: Intel vs AMD processors
« Last post by Deozaan on December 15, 2011, 02:55 AM »
I asked a similar question earlier this year here on DC. My question was: What's better? More Cores or faster Ghz per core?

I was considering getting a 6 core AMD or a 4-core Intel. Pretty much everyone there told me that Intel CPUs are vastly superior to AMD CPUs.

In fact, AMD recently came out with an 8-core CPU and in most cases it performs worse than Intel's 4-core CPUs.

Sources for that claim:

Single threaded performance is my biggest concern, and compared to Sandy Bridge there's a good 40-50% advantage the i5 2500K enjoys over the FX-8150.

As a result, in certain applications the new Bulldozer is not just slower than competitors from Intel, but is even slower than the previous-generation Phenom II X6. And it means that AMD didn’t succeed in launching a revolutionary desktop CPU.

All signs point to Intel as being the current leader in processors.

f0dder said it best:

AMD's only selling point these days would be lower price.

I already owned all but 3 of them, and of those three the only one I cared about was Cave Story+. But even paying the minimum (beat the average) to get CS+ is a great price for an amazing game.

I admit my ignorance in physics (supposedly I'm dumber than a monkey when it comes to physics) and especially about the Higgs Boson, but why would the knowledge of how matter interacts and gains mass and attraction remove the need/idea of God?

Skwire Empire / Re: SFV Ninja (Simple File Verification application)
« Last post by Deozaan on December 12, 2011, 02:54 PM »
Is there a way to trim duplicates from the list?

Say I've got a music folder with many many subdirectories of artists and albums, etc. If I have a single SFV file in the root music folder and I want to update it with newly added music, it would be most convenient to just have it scan the entire music folder (recursively) without adding duplicates that are already in the SFV file.

If this isn't in the program already, please consider this an official feature request.

Living Room / Re: Kicked Off the Plane for Games
« Last post by Deozaan on December 12, 2011, 02:30 PM »
is the worry around electronic devices really about interference rather than being used to send data/messages/targeting information just at take off and landing when a plane is a target? I always assumed that this is the real reason, not interference

It can't be about interference since many smart phones these days have "Airplane" mode and the flight attendants specifically instruct you to power your device off even if it has airplane mode.

I recently discovered the "split pane with preview" Labs option that makes it very much like a desktop email client and it's pretty interesting! I long ago got used to not having the preview pane, and I don't like everything about the behavior when it's enabled, but the quick toggle and easy switch between vertical and horizontal split is pretty cool. I haven't yet decided if I'll end up using it enough to leave it enabled but it's awesome to have the option.

Personally I don't like the split-pane preview window. What I do find useful sometimes is simply right-clicking an e-mail and then it will load a preview window on the fly. It's one of the Labs features called "Message Sneak Peek."

Watch the original full size and much higher quality video from the DC server:

Great screencast. But I'm curious why YouTube couldn't handle the full size/high quality video? Was it a limitation or a choice to have lower quality on YouTube?

WLC looks really awesome! It makes me wish I wrote more lists that needed links.

There are ways around this which allow you to gift a 4-pack to someone else.

How, if I may ask?

I'm a bit hesitant to post it on a public forum for fear that somehow it will be responsible for Steam becoming aware of the "problem" and fixing it. I'll tell you in PM.

I don't think you can get a 4-pack if you already own the game. I might be wrong though

Someone who doesn't own it can buy the 4-pack and "trade" the extra copies to someone who already owns it, which they can then hand out to whoever they please.

You can add it to your cart, in which case you get the warning about owning it, and that you should buy it as a gift.  But unlike other cases, the buy as a gift button is disabled.

There are ways around this which allow you to gift a 4-pack to someone else. That someone else then has all 4 games and must hand out the extra copies. But I'm pretty sure they can't accept the gift/hand out individual copies if they already own the game before the 4-pack is gifted to them.
