General Software Discussion / Re: Top 3 programs you use

Thanks TomColvin - I'll take another look at CbC. I use WordToys to help plug some of the holes in Word 2003 (I like the workspaces concept, for example) but CbC might prove useful afterall.

General Software Discussion / Re: Stay Away From Microsoft VISTA
« Last post by Darwin on September 01, 2007, 11:04 AM »
Josh - you posted while I was hacking away at my keyboard, writing the above. Just to clarify, my main issue with Vista centres around third-party software compatibility. I have a number of apps that are not yet supported under Vista and which will not be supported without a paid upgrade (ie when the supported version is released I'll be required to pay to update/upgrade to that version). As one of these applications will cost me in excess of $1000 to upgrade I am in no hurry to do this!

To anticipate other counter-arguments, I must confess that my real-world usage experience of Vista is NIL, so haven't been stung by UAC issues and the like... but I've been reading about them, a lot. In fairness, I've read a lot of positive reviews from knowledgeable people, too. Anyway, my hope is that MS will roll out Sp-1 and all will be well. In a perfect world, this will coincide with renewed wars between Intel and AMD and between AMD/ATi and NVidia along with seriously cheap RAM prices. That way, I can waltz into my local pusher computer shop and buy the latest, greatest notebook for a song, enjoying the kind of CPU and GPU power that I deserve, along with the most up to date OS available. I figure that any XP only apps that remain in my library can run on one of my other notebooks, which will still be running either XP or Win2k.

Frightening. I'm staying away for a host of reasons - mouser's post just hardens my resolve to do this. I think, to address scancode's "what can we do" comment, that all we can do is to get the word out, quickly. If consumers refuse to buy computers (particularly notebooks) with Vista preinstalled and either insist on free downgrades to XP or to buying with XP preinstalled or make it clear to salespeople that they will not buy a computer with Vista on it and walk, the retailers and the computer manufacturers will act pretty quickly to "encourage" MS to fix things...

Sadly, I don't think that the majority of people will care enough to make this happen. So I've come full-circle and ask "What can we do?". This is urgent for people like myself on a notebook as sooner or later it will need to be replaced because of hardware failure... I *could* buy a copy of XP but sort of resent having to pay to downgrade - if Mac hardware wasn't so RIDICULOUSLY overpriced (middle of the line Dual Core 7200 Centrino notebook here is about $1500 - that's with a 15.4" screen, 256MB discrete NVidia graphics, 5400 RPM 250GB SATA drive, 2GB RAM and Vista Premium - whereas the equivalent Mac notebook is in excess of $2500 with a slower processor) I'd seriously consider buying one along with a copy of XP, just to send a message! As it stands, I am increaslingly swayed by the option of buying a copy of XP along with a new Windows based notebook and simply downgrading/dualbooting it...

General Review Discussion / Re: Educational Software reviews?

It doesn't do the same job though - Rapid-Pi is an equation editor/addon on to facilitate adding equations to WP documents.

Equation Wizard doesn't do anything like that - you enter and equation and it tries to solve it or an expression and it tries to simplify it. I can't see any effective to cut and paste expressions/equations to other apps and it is standalone. Just seems to be very limited in what it can do.

You're not seriously suggesting that I actually READ the description of the app on the giveaway site are you? Puhlease!  :P

OK, busted (Darwin hangs his head and sulks in the corner!).

Rapid-Pi is cheap (if you are a student) and much better than Equation Wizard... The new version (2) adds support for all office applications and a standalone mode (ie you're not confined to using Word/Office).

wreckedcarzz - perhaps you *should* add a "none of the above" option as there will be (probably a majority of) peope who do not use any of the listed apps and whose votes will not therefore be recorded. Afterall, the point of the poll is simply to get an idea of the most commonly used applications; a none of the above option will reflect this better.

Heh, heh, heh... I was so enthusiastic about my own idea for Cody holding gold coins (prompted by Josh's clucks idea) that I didn't actually pick up on the "middle bit" about having DC'er's vote on different apps. I'd have to say that I'm with mouser on that one - too much potential for unscrupulous types to vote to drive up the rating of their (or their company's) product.

My vision was and is this:

BIG, proper reviews/roundups (a la the text editor review or Zaine's Word processor review) - Cody and his coins
MiniReviews - a badge featuring Cody with the script "Read the mini-review"
Forum discussions (superboyac's notetaking thread, for example) - Cody featuring the script "Read the discussion"

Hey all,
Just found a showstopper bug - if the columns are sorted in any way the system may perform operations on the wrong checkmarked files (marked files mode only).  I'll fix and upload this tonight.

The bug is in all versions... it's due to using an API column sort which scrambles the index. Argh!

Thanks for the warning and for the speed with which you got a fix out!

PCMag has just released Startup Cop 3 with a bunch of new features including both delayed startup and the ability to set startup order (as in, don't start app x until app y has successfully launched). It's $7.95 (unless you have a subscription to their downloads) and I've just installed it but haven't had an opportunity to wring it out and put it through its paces (ah, the mixed metaphor - an artform!). Anyway, here's a list of features from the website (because I am too lazy to type it out myself):

1) A new interface that behaves more like a Web browser, enabling you to go back and forth between pages.

2) A threat database, provided by safety experts Bit9, gives you security in knowing that the programs listed are what they say they are. Startup Cop Pro generates a unique hash for the files that Windows starts up. This hash is sent to the Bit9 servers to compare with all of the file information in their vast database. If a hash matches, Startup Cop Pro can provide a threat level for the file. This method of determining a file's threat level is much more accurate than basing it on filenames which can easily be renamed.

3) The ability to turn off monitoring programs attempting to add themselves to the startup process. For example, if you know a program needs to insert itself into your runonce key and you don't want to be alerted, you can choose to not monitor the program.

4) A new, more descriptive dialog appears when there are duplicate entries in the startup list.

5) A simpler icon view of startup programs (if you choose it).

6) The ability to select which search engine to use in order to search for more information about a program

PaperPort from Nuance will do this... but it's shareware...

I'm wary of assigning scores to programs based on user votes -- i think it's too inviting of companies to game the system.

Fair enough, though I was thinking about this more in terms of an award for apps featured in full-blown reviews. The mini-reviews and discussion forum awards could be dealt with as per app's suggestion (I like it!)  We could have a "Read the mini-review" and a "Read the discussion" graphic.

I say make it an actual award. We can have a forum for nominations and then users can vote and generate a rating (5 clucks, 4 clucks, etc) which will then be made into a custom rating icon for that site. I love this idea mousey. We should do it. Heck, I volunteer to head up management of assignment of these awards if you do decide to go for it.

Or we could have Cody holding one throug five gold coins?

That's a great idea, Josh. The developer could then link to the review, minireview or thread. Nice.

Thanks for the link cyberdiva. I always come across these reviews when googling and forget to bookmark them, so never know when I'm going to find them again. I like them too and am off to bookmark it NOW!

I used irfan viewer with all the plugins

as for the V-file viewer, does it really do what I say or I cant make it work?

what it does is to view the files inside a folder NOT to view the text of the files

I said I was "pretty sure" V - File Viewer would work for you, didn' offer certainty, and can't as I don't have it installed.

In DOpus, go into Settings - Preferences - Plugins - Viewers and uncheck "SourceCodeEditor" - now you're just viewing txt files rather than editing them...

kalos - I'm not clear on what you are asking here? Do you mean that you can open a file in Windows Picture Viewer and then advance through the following files by hitting enter and would like to be able to do this with plain text files?

Check out your other thread on Explorer replacements, as this question has been dealt with there.

I figured it out by reading the 'Getting to know Directory Opus' tutorial.

What? How novel... That's something that I almost always neglect to do (seriously! I'm always amazed when someone says "I solved the problem" and then explain that they read the manual, or worse, the "Quick Installation Guide", etc. because I realise too late that this is something that I haven't even thought of doing!).

Good for you and thanks for posting the solution. Interesting that the discussion is about the buttons - I have removed almost all of them from my toolbar and use the context menu. Thus when I checked into this earlier, I was using the context menu, not the buttons (which are not present on my toolbar).

Any idea what's the equivalent of XY's Catalog in DO? i.e., I want to add (a pointer to) a file or folder and I should be able to click to go to that location in DO (followed by a press of return key to open).

Haven't used this feature of XY, but suspect that what you are after in DOpus are "File Collections" (something else I really haven't used).

As for adding individual files to the Favorites, I don't really know - I've never thought to ask that question!

Armando - I you wouldn't mine, pester him about Outlook files as well. Under the current method used for indexing it takes hours for each and every indexing run. I wound up installing software that saves my e-mails as txt files and index that way (but I'd rather just index everything in my pst file instead - calendar and journal items, etc.)... Of course, this assumes that you care about this problem!

Interesting - I just tried zipping two files with DOpus in dual pane mode (vertical) and the zip file was created in the folder of origin. I looked at the zip settings in the settings dialogue and can't see anything that covers this, so don't know how I have it set up to accomplish this! I can post screenshots of the two tabs covering zip options from my setup, if you like, but that's about it. It's worth noting that my wife is still running DOpus 8 and on her setup creating a shortcut from the context menu in dual pane mode results in the shortcut being created in the source folder! That's what prompted me to speculate that its a more general setting and not zip specific. I'll take a look at her settings and post back if anything illuminating pops up...
