Heh, heh, had the same experience as laughing lizard:
when I remembered to use it
, though I did try running for awhile with the alt-tab trigger invoked. It worked well but every so often it would bog down on me and drove me nuts. I only ever ran Top Desk's trial, so didn't really wring it out; it might be better.

Living Room / Re: Mac OS X Leopard - All show and no go, or is it worth a try?
« Last post by Darwin on September 03, 2007, 01:26 PM »
Brandon - which method are you thinking of using to run OS-X on your Windows machine? I ask because there are at least two or three methods that I am aware of (so that's interesting in and of itself) AND there is an as yet unresolved (AFAIK) debate about the legality of doing so...

Oh, yes... Entbloess (now called Reflex Vision) works on XP as well. It's $9.99 and comparable to Top Desk, though AFAIK it doesn't do the Flip3D effect... No loss for me (as I don't use either anymore - see earlier post!).

Mouser, you tell us "Stay away from Windows Vista" and then promote Vista-only software... You're SICK !  :P :P

We can start calling him "the Pusher" (cue Steppenwolf...) - he pushes his product but doesn't use it!

Has anyone looked closely at LetMeType? It was highlighted on Shell Extension City today. I'm realising that I am not the best person to be evaluating this kind of functionality because it drives me crazy! I'm a fast touch typist and I don't really need to have the computer finish words off for me (like spell checking, though)... Thus, I am not in a great position to assess whether or not this might "fit the bill"!

Free Download a Day has Areca Backup highlighted today. Might be worth a look...

Also, see my post about Winalysis in the thread to which edBro pointed.

General Software Discussion / Re: Automatic Reg Key Backup
« Last post by Darwin on September 03, 2007, 12:45 PM »
I know that Winalysis will allow you to do this, but it is shareware and offers a LOT more functionality (options to create image files of your disks, monitor for changes, etc.). I used this extensively under Win2k (when I was coveting ME and XP's sysrestore feature - this is WAY more powerful/configureable and I should probably use it under XP but have moved on to TrueImage and GenieBackUpManager Pro) and had no negative experiences with it. Note that you can monitor remote computers as well.

Here's a bit from the helpfile about monitoring/backing up registry keys:

Include or Exclude a Registry Key
Use this dialog to select a registry key to include or exclude. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or HKEY_USERS and type in the key name. The key must exist on the target machine.

Include Subkey

Include the selected key and all keys and values below it.

Track Security Descriptors

Registry keys on Windows XP/NT/2000 have Security Descriptors that define an owner, group, DACL and SACL for the object. The DACL defines who can do what with the object. The SACL defines auditing settings for the object. There are also a number of attributes in security descriptors that control things like inheritance. Tracking Security Descriptors does not significantly slow down the program because the system will have the information in memory already.

Josh - I'm in. I have a few DC credits in my DC account if you, nudone and I go in together we can get it for about $2.50 each. So, who wants to be the "real" money man and have some donation credits sent his way? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Maybe it could be further pacified by spelling it "chute" (except, perhaps, for the extremely creatively minded...).

Looks interesting. I have similar functionality in whatever Entbloess is being called this week (I have had the latest version installed, so I've little excuse for not remembering) and also in WindowsFX from Stardock. However, I keep coming back to the realisation that alt-tab as it comes out of the box is all I need and far less resource intensive... Ultimately, these third party apps get consigned to a lingering death on my computer - installed but neglected for months before finally being ripped out!

Great Armando! I know that this is already on his to-do list, maybe your note will help promote it up the list! Your saved searches request is a great one as well, and shouldn't be too difficult to implement given that there is a history of searches available already.

Nice! Thanks urlwolf. I've just skimmed it and will have to wait for a quieter moment to read and digest what you've written, but what I've absorbed so far is impressive

Ah, thanks PhilB66 and Lashiec for setting me (and everyone else straight). I was just going by the folder name... Good to know what it's actually for and, better yet, not to delete it!

Thanks Curt! Yes, I've had similar experiences... my wife knows my hometown, where we have settled, better than I do and I grew to know hers better than she does. Funny how familiarity can breed not so much contempt as indifference or complacency.

Well... my opinion is "run away!". I can't imagine that this tip isn't available elsewhere for free. The trick, I suppose, is figuring out the tweak, but it sounds like you're already well on the way to doing just that!

C:\WINDOWS\$hf mig$ - aren't these your updates? (allow show hidden files and folders)

CleverCat - I don't have this folder either, but it *looks* like it has something to do with migrating from one "thing" to another. Did you move from an older system to a new one, or upgrade from ME to XP, or something like that? Just a thought...

@Darwin: I think PaperPorts intent is not the same as mine  - its really more the Docs2PDF solution as far as I can tell

OK - reread your wishlist and you're right! It'll do a part of each of your tasks but I don't know about doing it all. Part of its feature set is Docs2PDF, but it really does an awful lot more than that - data/document redirection is one of them.

rssaphire - interesting link to the datamystic solution. I've been using their ExcelPipe and PowerpointPipe apps for years and visit their website often to find updates but was completely unaware of "Filewatcher".

Would you believe mine is the classic blue screen with only four icons on it?

Stop laughing. Please stop.  :o

I have four icons on my classic blue desktop as well! Actually, as soon as I post this I'm removing two of the icons because I've just realised that I NEVER use them, so I'll be down to Recycle Bin and YourUninstaller.

:-[ Wow, I copied the shortcut for the StartupCop forum, posted it here, and then read the forum. Quite a read...! I'm having no trouble at all with it here (FWIW) but I'd read the forum for potential pitfalls.

Well, haven't done anything with it yet (it's times like these when I realize how infrequently I reboot my computer anymore), but will try to play around and post back. Best place for info on real world usage of this is the forum that PC maintains for their apps. Each utility gets its own board. This version of Startup Cop's board can be viewed here.
