General Software Discussion / Re: IE is working, Firefox is not. Why?
« Last post by Grorgy on October 01, 2007, 12:37 AM »
Actually i just noticed on your settings the DNS server is your router, I was doing that for a long time and it worked ok, but then it stopped, i had no idea why, after a brief call to my ISP support they told me to change the DNS to the one they recommend, so I did, no more trouble.

May not be your problem but could be worth a try

General Software Discussion / Office 2007 Compatability Pack
« Last post by Grorgy on September 30, 2007, 11:44 PM »
I recently installed the above mentioned pack and discovered that on my laptop, a celeron 1.5 with 764mb ram, that word ran very very slowly and was using heaps more resources than usual. processor usage at times reached 100%, it wasnt all word of course but it was a big player, it also would go "not responding".  I've uninstalled the pack and its back to normal, hardly leaps around for joy on my laptop but works ok. :)

Any one else had this problem? and if you did, did you find a way to overcome it as I can see more and more documents being produced in these formats soon.

General Software Discussion / Screenshot Captor featured on lifehacker
« Last post by Grorgy on September 27, 2007, 07:27 PM »
Freeware application Screenshot Captor is an advanced, full-featured screenshot application boasting an impressive feature set that rivals the shareware favorite, SnagIt. For example, Screenshot Captor has tons of options for capturing your full screen, specific regions or selected windows; it has excellent callout functions, like standard arrows and highlighting tools along with the excellent blur effect you see in the screenshot above; and it can automatically open screenshots in your favorite image editor or email screenshots as soon as you take them. In all, Screenshot Captor may be the most full-featured screenshot app I've seen, freeware or otherwise. On the other hand, it does have a slightly steeper learning curve, so if there's a downside, that may be it. Screenshot Captor is donationware, Windows only.

From memory i found them in the individual user directories (the documents and settings\user\) as well as the all users one.  It makes me think tho that quicktime installs the installation files for iTunes as well, will check that next time quicktime is updated. (if i remember) but it also explains the size of the download files, they always did seem excessive to me, going off what other media players are.

I discovered that iTunes leaves install files in application data folders and will reinstall if you aren't careful, I've deleted it a few times from my system now, i now even go through the registry and take out all references to it, but it reappears at intervals last time was just a few days ago     It wasnt installed but the installation files were there lurking

Would seem to me if anyone does make a freeware tool that will put all the icons in one list then PStrayfactory will very quickly disappear, seems way too much to pay for that functionality in my opinion,

Salamander looks good, I do like xplorer2 but it has a problem with, of all things, windowblinds, now its not the only program to have problems, but it sure is the only one i have met so far that telling window blinds to ignore it doesn't work, the blame on the forums is all put down to windowblinds, but if that were really the case why doesn't everything else have similar problems?  Its also intermittent and not on all systems so since i really like my nice dark skin  ;)  xplorer2 has to be consigned to the RIP section of the start menu to be dusted off maybe if they ever fix it or deleted if it dies

Not free but PDF annotator prides itself on ummm annotating pdfs.  http://www.ograhl.com/en/pdfannotator/  its specifically designed for tablet use but does work on a normal pc, with a mouse and keyboard, i tried it briefly but it wasnt something I do enough off, but maybe just what you are looking for

I like the gee whiz neato factor, seems to play a large part in purchasing decisions  :-[

A few things come to mind, if Linux is to be used more widely then it needs to get into a reasonable number of large corporations, places with 30 thousand or more workstations.  This is going to be a hard slog.  Those sort of companies are not going to pay huge amounts of money to teach people to use a new operating system when they can employ people off the street who have a basic knowledge of MS windows.  After all the cost of training 30000 plus people for a day is quite significant, if enough could be done in a day to make the users feel comfortable doing the work they need to do.  The amount they pay for a licenced windows copy is small compared to these costs.

And then there is the the user support areas, and the folk who are going to implement software changes throughout the organization.  Lots of training required there.

Then there is compatibility with the people they do business with.  Lets face it, a word processor that wont open .doc files is pretty useless, so they all can, and the support these big companies get from microsoft is, or was, when i was involved, quite good.

One company I worked for spent over 1/2 a billion dollars on a system to do their billing for them, all staff had access to this on windows PCs, probably not an insignificant cost in changing it to run on linux.

And i think its safe to say people will buy computers with operating systems they at least feel they know a bit, and those are the ones they use everyday at work.

When i first used CCleaner i had those sort of problems, Armando, very quickly learnt to untick boxes for the stuff i didnt want to lose  ;) Actually i tried that other one , clean up, and failed to remember to untick things so had to reset a few things  :-[  Oh well, we live and learn, or die trying

I havent been able to see how xyplorer can find my mp3 player, its a sansa, and in xplorer2 and windows explorer it appears as 'sansa' and can be opened and all normal file and folder tasks can be carried out, but it doesnt show up in xyplorer
