Developer's Corner / Re: Ribbon UI - is it really THAT good?
« Last post by mahesh2k on November 29, 2011, 07:24 AM »
Ribbon interface is more confusing for people like me and moreover each word processor has it's own placement issues. On the other hand standard file|menu type of toolbar at the top has less clutter than ribbon interface.

Correct me if i'm wrong here but Wave looks more of project collab or social collab tool than social networking script like Google+.

Wave a  G+ extension? Nah

G+ looks like a copy of diaspora with Google video talk (hangout) enabled in it. Wave on the other hand was different in terms of UI. I don't see any connection between wave and G+. Wave looks like a mix of gmail, messenger, shared wiki (collab package in general). I don't see any of wave's feature migrated to the G+.

mahesh2k - yes you're right, I should have thought before speaking.
Your point still holds because piwik requires self hosting and statcounter frees your from that limitation. Statcounter is a good package for those without their own servers or those with shared servers.

@Stoic Joker, working with linux server so no idea about Windows box.

They say Google is innovative. ;) I wonder how they copy from open source folks without any credit and people who don't pay attention assume that google is innovative because of social media folks talking in favor of them.

As diaspora and facebook standing strong against Google+, many social media google fanbois are posting against all the free and open source software projects. I am sure google will stop sponsoring open source projects which are threat to their business indirectly.

I learned something new this year - "If you're not paying for it then you're the product being sold" and there are few folks who live their entire life taking part in this popularity contest with their peers for the sake of showoff by using expensive  and trendy stuff that is sold under the disguise of something sinister from (insert google, facebook, microsoft and apple).

Statcounter is not a replacement for google analytics or piwik. Statcounter is similar to awstats and suits as a hit counter. Though it does show data like piwik and analytics but it comes with feature limitation. It also has a limit of logs as per member level. For free members data and logs are limited. In case of piwik and owa there is no such limitations as it is self hosted and if you've a dedicated server then piwik and owa are good replacement of google analytics.

Open web analytics and Piwik both are free and carry exact same features that are in offer from Google analytics.

They're nagging android users (ice cream sandwich update) to sign up for google+. This is way too scary than facebook. Adwords and analytics carry more personal data than facebook can collect in their fortress.

I don't know why mouser is using google analytics here if there is piwik alternative that he can install on server. I have blocked analytics already with ghostery and ABP but still why use it.

They're closing many services like G translate API, Wave, Buzz, Bookrmarks etc.

No more google services for me. This month turned off many of their active services like analytics, google+, reader, mail etc etc. I'm done with their puppet show.

@Mouser, why not add "License" link at the top of the menu near "Donate" and make it red or flashing ( with image -new). That works on noobs and people with less attention span.

My 2 cents.

Samsung and LG are the two to look for if you're looking for - 1) Internet enabled 2) HDTV feat 3) 3D. There isn't much you'll notice in 3D with current TVs but still it's okay.

General Software Discussion / Re: Complaint: Freemake
« Last post by mahesh2k on November 19, 2011, 10:49 AM »
Adware is when you have a piece of software which itself is displaying advertisements.

Starware and Freeze.net are two such programs that install bot in your system and check for active browser and show ads inside the browser when you search on google or similar other search engines. These type of adwares are hard to spot and if freemake is hosting such bot with this software on target system then surely it qualifies for adware. Ads don't need to be inside the software to qualify for adware.

« Last post by mahesh2k on November 18, 2011, 05:11 AM »
We're in 2011/2012 now and why artists need middle-man and record lables or orgies like RIAA ? Seriously, uploading directly to cloud stores without middle man saves a lot of money. Promotion is not that hard, i mean it's not that biggie. Atleast for genres like Trance, New Age, House, Techno, Drum n Bass and Ambient, there's hardly any benefit from record labels. Especially when they take 60% cut of profit for the sake of fame.

« Last post by mahesh2k on November 16, 2011, 12:54 AM »
I think aim is not to push any other tablet out of market. They're branding kindle as an ebook reader. So when it comes to ebook reader, most of the folks don't look for android tablet but they go for either kindle or nook. Ofcourse this doesn't apply to skeptical buyers and techies, they find tablets with multiple use. This is not the case for many people out there.

Asrock US based company but taiwani manufactured motherboards, fails in 1 year. I found CMOS battery ending after every 6 months on this board also USB ports die in 1-2 years.
Well, that's a complete 180 degrees from what I've found.  I have two AsRock motherboards that haven't given any problem since new, that's 3+ years - a friend has another with the same story. After Gigabyte, they'd be my next choice depending on features/price required.
I understand that many of their pieces are of much higher quality. I don't know how i got faulty products consistently. I guess this has something to do with regular power cuts and other grid issues. But gigabyte and intel boards so far managed to stand even after power related issues.

The Taiwanese motherboards would typically fail after about 3 years.
