Hey TinJaw: what do you think about maintaining this list in your original post? That way it's easy to see the latest  :-\

Sound good Perry.

Good points mwb1100. Yes, my info is only relevant if these are COM DLLs that need to be registered. I wrongly assumed that was the case. mwb1100 is correct, there is a defined way to search for DLLs.

  • The directory where the executable module for the current process is located.
  • The current directory.
  • The Windows system directory. The GetSystemDirectory function retrieves the path of this directory.
  • The Windows directory. The GetWindowsDirectory function retrieves the path of this directory.
  • The directories listed in the PATH environment variable.

Just some information. "DLLRegisterServer is missing." means that the function by that name (in the interface) is not being found. That is generally a sign of corruption of either memory or storage. If all of these DLLs are stored on the same location of your hard drive, for example if you used a "smart" defragger, that may be an indication of a portion of your HDD going bad. If rebooting solves the problem, then you are getting memory corruption and that is probably due to a rogue memory leak that is corrupting the memory spaces occupied by those DLLs.

Do I hear a sixth? Folks, don't be left behind the trend. You can see how fast this is growing. You won't be able to claim you were one of the first group to ride this wave if you don't get in now on the ground floor.

Gothi[c], just wanted to say that your tool really look like a fantastic one!

Unfortunately it will be a piece of crap that is as slow as molasses as it is hacked out in Python. Why don't you use a real language like C++.  ;)

You could start with Knoppix or BartPE and whip one up pretty fast. 99.9999% of the work would be getting people to use it.

I should carry a mic with me to catch my spontaneous rants during the workday...now those are gems.
Call your voice mail and leave a message. Then you can grab it later and turn it into an mp3 and post it.

Darwin usually raves about them, so I'm sure he can tell you more about the viewers.

PM Darwin. I am sure he wouldn't mind. In fact he probably just overlooked this thread and would be happy to reply via the thread if you ping him about it.

Great links Perry. Those people who are too snooty to join in on our purchase (and this thread) will just have to find them on their own.  8)

Without knowing what you are doing, my guess is that you are either skipping step 4 or are getting an error doing so.

From your USB device, click makeboot.bat to make the drive bootable

1) How long is considered to be too long for a thread?
-cranioscopical (March 25, 2008, 02:10 PM)

When somebody who hasn't seen the thread needs to spend more than 10-15 minutes catching up.

If there is a discussion thread on an interesting topic that has caught my interest because of its length, I am usually willing to spend 10-15 minutes catching up to be able to join the discussion. IOW if I think I can gain something from it, I am willing to put in some amount of effort.

2) What helps to keep a thread alive and interesting?
-cranioscopical (March 25, 2008, 02:10 PM)

  • No "Me Too!" posts.
  • New information/opinion at least every other post.
  • On a topic I know enough about to contribute. Or..
  • On a topic I don't know much about and want to learn.
  • Being a new perspective on an older problem. (i.e. Should the Start Menu be completely revamped? or Since now days most people have replaced their computers, should people start making it a common practice to create a "home server.")
  • It's a thread that consists of people complementing boosting the ego of Tinjaw.

The closest thing I can think of is RemoteByMail, but its functionality is limited.

You could probably whip up a custom system that accepts PGP signed and encrypted emails that contain scripts (Python, Bash, VBA, etc) and execute those scripts.

Prototype could take email with Python scripts and then execute the scripts.

It think that Microsoft will acquiesce to real world concerns of their Big Cu$tomer$ and extend the life of XP by two or three years. At least Microsoft can accomplish that with out much risk. There is a HUGE risk in saying, "No. Use Vita." when Microsoft knows, from internal experience non the less, that Vista is not ready for prime time in the 24 x 7 x $Millions enterprise arena. Risk mitigation will prevail.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I also own PromptPal. However, I do use the command prompt often and :-* the ability to do multiple panes. I made the purchase this morning.

1. Predefined layouts for groups of command prompt windows
PowerCmd allows you to group command prompts in different panes (so called split windows). You will have up to 4 groups with 6 types of predefined layout styles. If you wish to quickly shift the focused panes and input commands, just use Ctrl+1 (or Ctrl+2/Ctrl+3/Ctrl+4 for corresponding panes) to change current working pane. There are 4 samples as follows:

Here is something I have been meaning to research. I assume programs like 7-zip, WinRAR and the like must have an option to take into consideration the file being compressed. I assume you could have a special compression setting that compresses stuff in different ways depending on the source file.

It might even be advantageous to take an look at the files beforehand and create an archive, putting the highly compressible stuff in front and the already compressed stuff in the back. It could then switch algorithms as it goes, creating chunks, text and stuff using one algorithm and mp3, jpg, jar, using another. Or does somebody already do this?

Sysinternals/Microsoft Process Explorer should help you determine that. You can see parent/child relationships as well as dig down to the thread level (and beyond).
494
A think something that many people overlook is that many of today's data files are already compressed and further compression is going to take time and CPU cycles. For example mp3, jpg, gif, jar, and others are already compressed.

These days using NTFS in Linux and ext2 in Windows is easily achieved with the right drivers. I usually default to NTFS as I suspect Linux applications will be more forgiving of NTFS than the other way around.

sorry. the question is: if linux is 'just a process' from windows' perspective, then maybe it can live on one core only.

One process doesn't mean one thread. Threads should load balance just fine across multiple cores.

"Portability

Unlike User Mode Linux, coLinux always utilizes only one process of the host OS for all its Linux processes, privately managing their scheduling, resources, and faults in a manner which is contained and entirely independent of the way the host OS is implemented. In fact, coLinux only requires a very small set of commonly exported primitives from the host OS kernel in order to work, thus, it can be rather easily ported to run under any operating system, such as Solaris, or even Linux itself."

These are two cool sites.

I think we need to invent a new word for these types of sites. If these were books, they would be called coffee table books. I am sure someday the coffee table and the books on them will be replaced by Microsoft Surface and websites like these two.

Coffee Table Websites?

There need not be an end point. I picked one because I honestly thought we would have over 10 people wanting to do this. I'm happy to wait until we get a few more interested folks to join us.

One of us can bump the thread every few weeks to bring it to the attention of new folks.

Well, I've been running it for a week or so. Intensive use (actually thinking of abandoning windows forever).

It's as starble as a stand-alone version, I'd say.

Thanks for the report.

The only thing that may act funny is the X server (but that's independent of the andlinux install; it's Xming). Xming is under active development, so bugs are expected. I had some problems with swing applications.

Yes. Dependencies are always a pain when they aren't stable.

tinjaw, you are a dev; you owe it to yourself to try it. The command line experience under windows is plain painful. if you use it at all, you will be relieved under linux (you know that).

Oh I've got plenty of non-standard stuff at my fingertips. I run Linux all the time. And on Window boxes I have Cygwin, native Windows ports of GNU software, and lately I run a lot of iPython as my shell.
