General Software Discussion / Writing perfect software
« Last post by Mark0 on October 24, 2006, 06:14 AM »
It's all about the process, as per the on-board shuttle group, the team that writes the software that control the STS.
Very interesting article here:

General Software Discussion / Vista and unknown filetypes
« Last post by Mark0 on October 21, 2006, 07:55 AM »
A question for whoever have a Vista RC running... :)

What does it do when the user try to open an file with an extension that have no app associated? Windows XP used to let the user choose if he wanted to use a web service to gather more info, and redirected here: Microsoft Application Search
Does Vista the same?

Thanks,
Bye!

Living Room / Re: Forums: pay for posts
« Last post by Mark0 on October 19, 2006, 05:00 AM »
Sorry mouser, I think my poor English is to blame! :) I posted exactly because I was concerned by this kind of shady / pay for things. Also, I noted that this user registered on my forum just after reading a post of mine on the "your forum" section of SMF community. It posted a comment there, and then registered on the forum. I think this could be a systematic thing.

Yeah, it's a bit sad to see how "economics" get into forums / community.
Under cover agents / posters from company was an "old" topic (I think I saw that a lot on forums about video cards... Nvidia & ATI really have done some guerrilla marketing there).
This one seems a bit different, forum hoster that pay posters to drive attention / traffic, but it's also a bit... don't know, disturbing? It force one to always think about the reasons behind posts.

Living Room / Forums: pay for posts
« Last post by Mark0 on October 19, 2006, 02:57 AM »
Just saw a new user registering on my forum today.
Checked the profile's website, and it point here:

Forum Posters

The purpose of forumposters.org is to match forum owners with quality forum posters who want to be paid for posting on forums. Paid forum posting is useful for creating and maintaining a quality forum that attracts users who you want to stay and contribute to your forum as well. Without hiring at least a few forum posters, it can be difficult host a forum that is of any repute and value to advertisers. Forumposters.org does not charge forum posters or forum owners for the service that it provides. Forumposters.org is a free website for matching forum posters with forum owners.

Never heard about something like this before, but... it seemed inevitable.

One I like very much is Aardvark Firefox extension. It's very nice to check the structure of any interesting page.

General Software Discussion / Cool Ajax Timeline widget
« Last post by Mark0 on October 14, 2006, 04:31 PM »
Very nice scrollable timeline. A simple XML file for the events and a few lines to implement the widget is all that's needed:

Maybe nice even for showing the changelog of a software...

Haha, that's priceless. It had to happen eventually. I just love how blatant it is. :D
Yess! :)
As a "non money involved" alternative, it could have let one free submit/digg slot for every "digg this" click made. A social submitter for a social site! :)

It has now been reported that the session in question was likely an unsubstantiated joke / BS show.

:D :D Tried, but I don't really like it at all.
Me think file manager's are very very subjective things!

Simply beautiful:

The video is fed to a VR headset, that also control the camera motion.

General Software Discussion / Re: Data recovery software suggestions?
« Last post by Mark0 on September 25, 2006, 09:53 AM »
For recovery of images / bitmaps there's also my little free command line driven BitmapRip.
Just make an image of the HD, compactflash, SD or whatever device, and it will scan it for known signatures. Not the most sophisticated, but it's free! :) For Win and Linux.

For general file recovery, I used OnTrack's EasyRecovery various times with good results. Back2Life is another interesting one.

General Software Discussion / Re: Opera and Gmail users might like this
« Last post by Mark0 on June 27, 2006, 02:59 AM »
One thing I see in Opera (both 8 and 9) with Gmail is that it's constantly reloading the little bitmaps that makes the rounded frames of the messages. It's very annoying because it become very slow.
I tried to play a bit with the various cache settings and the like, but it keep doing it.
Happens to me only?

Thanks,

Now I'm more inclined toward an ASUS Mypal 636N. Seems to have a much longer battery life, and included support for car mounting and car powersupply.

Anyone have seen / used the Fujitsu Siemens Loox N500 series?

Link

It's a Win Mobile 2005 PDA, with an integrated GPS (with internal antenna).
I was thinking about a PDA (to experiment with) and a navigator for some times, and this seems a nice combo!

Living Room / Re: I've bought a Mac
« Last post by Mark0 on June 18, 2006, 11:43 AM »
I too got a iMac, a couple of months ago.
I was thinking about experimenting a bit with OS X & Objective C + Cocoa from sometimes and the roll out of the new Intel models, plus the ability to boot about any x86 OS was the last things I needed to make the buy.
Currently I find myself using it as a Windows box most of the time, highly appreciating the fact that is nearly silent and cool running.

Haven't yet found enough time to play with the OS X dev tools, but it definitely make a good impression.
