General Software Discussion / Re: win10 auto upgrade - confusing mesg
« Last post by anandcoral on September 15, 2015, 03:33 AM »
MerleOne, if you have auto update on and depending on your net connection, windows will download all related updates and then show the icon. I got mine nearly 4 weeks after nearly everybody here. I was reading and commenting on Win10 without the icon. My net connection is very bad and I understand it was due to that.

Now I am a happy user of Win10 without Cortana  ;) She will come when MS allows her in India.

Thanks Shades.

Thanks Shades for the suggestions.

Can I get any help file, web link etc for the methods 2 and 3 ? They seem interesting and I may try them in case C: nearly fills up.

Regards,

Anand

Thanks MilesAhead, tomos and Shades for the help.

I am more wiser now. Yes it does not look wise to gain 1/2 Gb with the risk of loosing 100 gb if anything goes wrong. I do not have Win10 clean installation CD, neither image of the hdd. UEFI/GPT is quite different from MBR system, as I found in AOMEI PA to convert between them for re-sizing.

So I have dropped the plan for these partitions. Better safe than sorry.

Actually I wanted to increase the size of my C: drive which is filling up faster now in Win10, but the above small gbs won't help much. Have to think some other ways.

Thanks all once again.

Anand

General Software Discussion / Deleting Recovery Partition and Merging to C drive
« Last post by anandcoral on September 10, 2015, 10:55 AM »
My Dell laptop came with Win8, got auto updated to 8.1 and now to 10.
Now I find that there are 3/4 recovery partition on my hdd. I assume they are for 8, 8.1 and 10.

2015-09-10_211250.png

I want to delete those partitions and merge the space into C: partition. I have made USB recovery of Win10.
I googled for help on it and downloaded "EaseUS Partition Master" and "AOMEI Partition Assistant".

Before I start deleting and merging, my query is "Has anyone have similar experience ?"
Any advise on it is valuable for me at this stage.

I have added an undocumented/secret feature for this, add ";perpage=#" at the end of your request when viewing a topic, for example ";perpage=500".

I works  Thanks a lot. :)

Normally I or anybody else will not use it. We will use it only if we find interest in a message in a topic, which has become few pages long, and want to read back messages and find clicking 'prev' or 'next' time consuming.

Well my message again got lost.
https://www.donation....msg388318#msg388318

Maybe I was not clear then. I rephrase it.

Can we have an option to show all messages in a thread in one long page without any page break ? It will help me a lot.

Hope I get an answer this time.

Back at home when I put the pen-drive in my machine, AVG stops and reports virus and I format it. This is a routine.

ha! I suppose if the pen-drive ever came back WITHOUT a virus you'd get suspicious, huh?  ;D

You bet, if it happens though I doubt. They are still using XP, you see. :)

I've been using AVG and have been satisfied with it.. Here's what I'll say:
  • 1. I'm using AVG as antivirus and firewall. I want a combined system.  I previously used ESET and was very happy with that except for a known bug that was bluescreening me on removal/insertion of external drives, which caused me to switch.
  • 2. I haven't noticed it slowing down my system -- if i had then i would drop it.  It's possible of course that it is doing so on occasion but that I am not noticing it or not properly blaming it.
  • 3. As far as being a resource hog, I haven't noticed it being so. Any tips on how to compare it (or web pages comparing it) would be welcome!

As a more general answer I should say that I'm more of a satisfactionizer than an optimizer when it comes to system tools -- once a tool works well enough i tend to stop looking for the best tool..

Ditto. Even with AVG Free.

The fun part is, when I give my pen-drive to the photo printing shop, they scan it with anti-virus (name withheld) and then copy the images to print. Back at home when I put the pen-drive in my machine, AVG stops and reports virus and I format it. This is a routine.

I agree.

After burning my fingers in maintaining codes for newest UX, I now keep things simple in all my programs. In fact they all look and behave similarly.

Main menu bars then dialog box and buttons. That's all. I do make features which are not the main purpose of the program, say changing color of dialog window, in right-click menu. It is like testing features which do not affect the day to day working of the program, if useful, then may put it in menu bar or button.

bit, the message looks like from 'internet security' option of AVG which is in AVG PRO and can be enabled for 30 days in the free version.

AVG Free does not give any message for expiry. I have been using satisfactorily AVG Free since early days of AVG.

You may try this link http://www.avg.com/i...antivirus-protection to compare and download the free version, which will auto update but not expire. I have now AVG 2015 Free.

I am happy with new DC now and posting more messages then DC1 time. May be this new layout and colors attract me more. :)

I am using the "Print" option to read threads now. I have not-so-good net connection and sometimes get to check DC after 2/3 days. So the "print" option gives me all in a long scrollable message view to search and read.

Now the problem is, if I want to quote a message and reply, I again have to go back to normal per page view of messages and search in each page for that message to view and quote.

I hope I could explain above, I myself feel it became complex sentences.

Anyway, my suggestion is if we can give an option like "-allmessagesinonepage" in custom options, and show all the messages in a thread in one long page, without page breaks, it will solve the problem.

Anand

Well these looks "neutral".

Or both, if preferred.

From the website http://pdfrider.codeplex.com/

PDF Rider is made upon the utility pdftk and can be used to:

* Merge PDF documents
* Insert pages from another pdf file
* Extract pages from a PDF document to a new document
* Delete pages
* Rotate pages
* Crypt and Decrypt a pdf file
* Burst a document into single pages

You have to check if it works as per your requirement.

2. The guest image, if temporary then ok, else I will suggest some blank face type image there.
im happy to get a replacement!

These and similar I use for staff / user photo place holder in my apps. See if they can change the current big smiley, as it does not indicate that it is the guest image. The images are as an idea and can be reduced or similar small image used.

Further if I press Enter after user name in Forum, then it asks for password but shows 259200 minutes to stay connected. I think it is six months converted to minutes, but looks, well...too mathematical.

BTW inserting attachment is big hurrah now

After Google Reader died, I looked around and settled with commafeed. All my feeds work and am happy with the clean and lean interface.

Another more general point: the first thing I do when I visit the forum is scroll down to the very bottom to see what's latest in the "Info Center - Active Topics" section. I don't know how many other forum users do that, but if a lot or most of them, then from a usability point of view it might be better to have that section at the very top, so there is no need for all that scrolling. Just a suggestion.

You are the 2nd person who has told me that's how you read the forum. I had no idea people did this.

The first things I do on login in is look at the bottom of the home page to see the recent Active Topics

That makes 3 of us now...  ;)

me too.

Got the new Forum look today. Looks good. Color combination also soothing. Congratulation to Mouser and all members.

Went around the forum and found some points as below,

1. Minor spelling mistake in "Still have questions?  Don't hesitate to context us ([email protected])."
https://www.donation...&action=register

2. The guest image, if temporary then ok, else I will suggest some blank face type image there.
Why he is happy so much in this era of privacy concerns from NSA to Win10 ? Or is he "she" ?

3. The thread page numbers make difficult to click, at least for me.  Pages: prev | 1 2 [3] | bottom | last
I find difficult in positioning my mouse cursor at '1' or '2', say. Can we make it bit wider with space, box etc. ?

I found the "Print" option of message thread very useful. All messages in one long page and one can find any text too.   Many times I needed to find my apps name for any bug fixes mentioned in another thread, say.

Anand

Living Room / First impression of Win10. Google - Material Design
« Last post by anandcoral on August 25, 2015, 11:42 AM »
To keep DC forum mesg small, I have made webpage with the supportive images.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wd2lfEe_IG5H-JFbg6fvVeCki7RyQvP4fetLh7lS6dw/pub

First impression of Win10. Google - Material Design.
Yes this is what I saw from login screen to desktop. MS is following Google.

First good news.
FARR runs, hurray. :D
All my apps run without any error, I can sleep peacefully. :)

Now not so good news.
Login photo now in round frame just like Google+. Why ? MS following Google !!
Tray icons black and white clipart. Hard to understand which is what. Who told MS that users are color blind ?? :tellme:
Windows title became white, same as body, no separation mark / line etc. Looks like MS is copying material design of Google but forgot that Android apps do not have a title bar which user need to click and drag to move the window.
Start menu looks like a dark menu bar attached with a WinPhone with those tile apps.
All icons in task bar now show smaller in size. Bigger icon in Win 8.1 was easier to see.
Settings looks like a webpage, flat. This is advancement ??

But the the killer is child window display. My program which has a main window and child windows for entry, report etc. show very odd. It shows WinXp button in child windows !!

More news.
Solitaire exist and it is free.
Cortana disabled in India, so will know after I meet her.

I understand that Win10 is work in progress. So many of the problems may get fixed in auto updates. I also understand that MS think most user are in Android so are habituated to seeing such windows.

But like most users, I also request MS to understand desktop users too.

Living Room / Re: Movies or films you've seen lately
« Last post by anandcoral on August 24, 2015, 06:39 AM »
Watched "Edge of Tomorrow" yesterday.

The concept of the story hit me "live - die - restart". Isn't that we all have been doing with our WinOS all these years, install - use - reinstall. Did the director got the idea from Windows ?

Now MS is forbidding that. No more reinstall, as we will not have the CD or copy of the latest Win10 which will auto get updated to 10.0.12345677... , like Chrome.

Anand
