General Software Discussion / Re: SIGIL, free ePub editor
« Last post by ewemoa on September 01, 2014, 11:27 PM »
From Sigil's Spiritual Successor @ Making epub happen:

At this point Sigil is no longer being actively developed. Moving development to Github has netted a few contributions but they were one offs and fairly minor. With Sigil development being stalled, Kovid (of calibre) starting making the tweak epub functionality in calibre into a full editor.

calibre's editor at this point is stable and has many of the features, though not all (yet), that are present in Sigil. Like Sigil, calibre's editor is open source and unlike Sigil is being actively developed. I've known Kovid for quite some time (though calibre) and I'm confident that the calibre editor is the way forward.

For people using Sigil, keep using it as long as it works for you. If you find it's not meeting your needs or if you want to see what else is out there I recommend checking out cailbre's editor. While it doesn't use any of Sigil's code I consider it Sigil's spiritual successor.

On *NIX, the successor in question appears to be called "ebook-edit".

A quick spin showed that it doesn't appear to be WYSIWIG -- ended up writing raw XHTML.  Functionality tested included: modifying a table of contents and adding a new page.

I use a different strategy for this type of situation when using some text editors -- creating a new view of the same document and navigating in the new one.  For Firefox, something similar used to be possible with an extension that allowed one to split the currently visible window / tab (?).  Not sure if this is still possible...

Update: I think the following or its predecessor was what I used:

  Fox Splitter

Update 2: Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to work with FF 31.0...

... but both of you are concentrating on the throwaway comment rather than the question?

Opinions similar to "not worth the trouble" are what I'm familiar with (though from experiences that are perhaps outdated) -- no good ideas regarding what the situation is like these days.

I really have learned to love Fastest Search too. It has a learning curve, but is worth it.

Thanks for mentioning this -- I'm trying it out for the regular expression search capabilities.  There seems to be a lot of functionality in this add-on.

Anyone suggest an alternative that does only (or mostly) just searching with the option of using regular expressions?

Thermomix. Totally insane. Just crazy what you can do with it. Off the hook. No words to describe it. I'd heard about it and thought, "Meh, whatever." No... It's simply mind-blowing.

So, how has this one been since your original post?

Simply. Amazing.

Thanks for sharing!

Dare I ask if there are any downsides you've noticed (you got yours as a gift IIRC -- but perhaps maintenance costs)?

Tried it, abandoned it.

Ditto.

Found it good when dedicated to reading things such as PDFs, but have stopped doing the multiple display thing.

Function lengths might get longer as a result and that's not so good when working with other people or when I have no or poor access to such tall displays.

After some unsuccessful attempts via genisoimage and trying a (successful but rather lengthy) work-around via UDF, re-encountered xorriso:

Xorriso creates, loads, manipulates, and writes ISO 9660 filesystem images with Rock Ridge extensions. Files can be copied in and out. Optionally it supports hard links, ACLs, xattr, and MD5 checksums. The session results get written to optical media or to filesystem objects.

via https://www.gnu.org/software/xorriso/

Burned a BD-RE with an ISO containing a file larger than 4GB.  Apparently some OSes may not handle the result, but FWIW...

Although I'm a bit concerned about the future of the Ketai library, am reading Rapid Android Development:

blurb from the aforementioned linked page:

Create mobile apps for Android phones and tablets faster and more easily than you ever imagined. Use “Processing,” the free, award-winning, graphics-savvy language and development environment, to work with the touchscreens, hardware sensors, cameras, network transceivers, and other devices and software in the latest Android phones and tablets.

Interesting find.

Haven't tried it, but liked the naming of tldr -- one of the projects listed under similar solutions.

tig seems to be a pretty decent terminal-based UI to git -- since it's ncurses-based, I don't know if it will run on non-*NIX systems.

Hadn't heard of either and specifically curious about the further development of Final Term to see how some of the planned features evolve.  Thanks for mentioning them :)

Currently using sakura / lilyterm / emacs for the most part, but they all seem to have their drawbacks...

For those who like Firefox forks on Linux, there's a native Pale Moon around. :)

He he.  I haven't gotten in to run under NixOS yet -- hopefully before too long though :)

I don't know what "auto-raise" is.  Would you describe it?

This might be described as having the window one has a pointing-device pointer over coming to the front / top automatically.  I think it's likely to get used where the settings are such that focus-follows-mouse (so no clicking necessary for focus to change).

I'm trying it out under Wine -- one odd thing is that it seems to auto-raise (though my window manager is configured to not do this).  Does that happen under Windows?

Picked up a GOAL ZERO Nomad 7 before I went OS, (I have V1 - previous version of the linked one), for charging the phone while I read ebooks.

Looks nifty!  Please let us know how well it works as you use it more.

What is SyncPlaces?

According to alternative.to's page for SyncPlaces:

a Firefox extension that allows you to synchronise your bookmarks and passwords between different installations of Firefox (e.g. a browser at Home and another at Work). It only works with Firefox v3 and above (but is compatible with older bookmark extensions). The synchronize feature requires your own Web or FTP server, which is used to store the bookmarks centrally, but there are a number of free servers you can safely use (see the Support section for details of at least one of these).

Possibly once abandoned according to SyncPlaces, SortPlaces ... preserving these and other excellent Firefox add-ons...

What is Classic Theme Restore?

May be this?

  Classic Theme Restore

Restore squared tabs, appmenu, add-ons bar, small button view and more for Firefox 29+ (Windows/MacOSX/Linux).

What is FEBE?

May be this?

  Firefox Environment Backup Extension

FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your extensions individually into installable .xpi files.  Now you can easily synchronize your office and home browsers.

Looks like there is a portable version too (though via an installer [1]):

Thanks for mentioning it -- hope to try it soon.

[1] May be the following provides installer-less versions:
