I don't think this is related to DC, if you copy and paste the link, the link on the URL bar also changes to their homepage (even though the page is correct)
478
 • Do away with license key system entirely, go back to just asking for pure voluntary donations; this should lead to happier users but could reduce donation substantially.
 • Simplify license key system: Allow anyone to get a N-month license key immediately on site without signing up.  Donations required for permanent license key; do away with need to sign up and 6month renewal turning into permanent license key; This would be simpler to explain and use, and doing away with signup encouragement for non-donors would be welcome by many.
 • Remove the need for license key but allow donors to download newer versions of programs; Idea here would be that donors would get the latest versions of the programs ahead of non-donors; the versions available to non-donors would always be N months behind latest release; This has an advantage of being simple to explain and offering a real benefit to donors, while still offering fully free versions to everyone and no need for free users to deal with license keys; Another advantage is the incentive is on us to keep improving our software.
 • Have a page where anyone can download a full license key, and must simply state that they have considered and will consider in the future, the idea of donating to the site, but not require anything; at least this would let us have an opportunity to ask them to consider donating.
 • Leave everything the way it is.
Other ideas?

 • 1st idea: Like you said, this is definitely an option but will drop revenue of the site. I would hate to see advertisements on my beloved doco :)
 • 2nd idea: Good idea, probably the best of the bunch. I think you could combine 2 and 3 and find the perfect system. The idea here is that the person gets immediate access to the newest versions on DoCo with the temp license without requiring sign-up. After that period, however, any subsequent licenses would result in "delayed" access to future versions until a sign up is done.
 • 3rd idea: See above. Combined with 2, I think it could be a winning option.
 • 4th idea: This could be a "sign up" form in which they enter basic info: Name, Email and receive a key right then and there. They are not put on any mailing lists, etc. But do receive a key. You would have to make sure and annotate that they will not receive emails unless they opt in (good idea for a field on the form.
 • 5th idea: NO, see above.

I think that delayed access to versions is not a good idea, since many versions are bug fixes and not feature improvements. You'd be handing out a buggy version of your software to anyone who doesn't donate. The solution for this would obviously be to maintain two versions, one with more features than the other, but both with the same bug fixes. This sounds like those "free" vs "payed" versions of the software. I'm alright with this approach, but it involves having 2 binaries for each application, and switches in the code to do this. Personally, I think is is too much of an hassle and users wouldn't get to see all the potential of the software.

I propose something similar to what we have now, but with a slight change: when the nag comes up in the app (after 1month), it has a "get your free key here" link. The user goes to the page and he gets the following message:

Hi! We are glad you are still using our application after one month!
You now have three options to register our application:
Here's your free 3-month key: khbknasnxci<insert rest of key here>
OR you can join our forum and get a 6-month free key (and a lifetime free key in 6 months)
OR you can donate any amount you like and get a lifetime key for all our apps right now!

The wording is terrible, but I'm sure we could write it a bit better. The guidelines behind my idea are this:
People who don't care will just get the 3-month key and go with it. With the current model, they would only register to get the key anyways, so let them just have it and be happy with it, but make them return in 3-months to see if they have gained any interest in the forum.
People who actually read websites might be more interested in the forum (and may provide interesting contributions to the forum). These would be the ones who would register for the 6-month key.

A few more ideas that just popped about this:
1 - maybe the 6-month forum key (or the permanent forum key) could be handed out only if the user had more than 2(?) posts.
2 - better yet, maybe the 6-month forum key could only be handed out to people who wrote what they think about the application at the forum? A "Tell us what you think about FARR and get a 6-month(1-year?) key" kind of thing?
3 - maybe we could have a "why I deserve a free key" thread which could also be one of the options above for obtaining a key. Might bring good karma and more members to the forum (as it would force people to do a post). That's how you got me a few years ago, IIRC :P

Living Room / Re: Rant: I hate cellphones
« Last post by jgpaiva on February 18, 2011, 12:16 PM »
So it's been a while since I created a Gmail account. Lo and behold as soon as I hit the account creation menu it was asking for mobile phone number verification. Oh ****

I have a question: What account creation menu?

I just created a GMail account and it didn't ask for a mobile number.

maybe it depends on country?
There must be something else also. I've tried once to create a second account for myself and it asked for cell phone number, but just now I tried creating it in a private tab and it didn't ask me for anything.

(Btw, any 'better' way to thank like reputation + etc. ?)
No reputation system, Eternal Gratefulness will also work nicely. But if there was a reputation system in place, f0dder would obviously be off the scale anyways :P

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Farr Alias: Window Management
« Last post by jgpaiva on February 15, 2011, 12:23 PM »
Hi mark,
This alias really was intended to do simple window management. If you're looking for something more advanced, maybe you should look into something like another program of mine, GridMove (see my signature for link ;) )

[yes, I meant your photo, rjbull ;)]

:) That makes sense, I think that a photograph is like seeing the world through other people's eyes, that's why I don't find my own photos very interesting ;)
I could easily imagine that church as filming location for a few fantasy/medieval movies!

another beautiful image - very classically 'English' looking :)

Thanks  :)  I could have done without the wires; maybe should have walked closer, but that might have changed everything else.  Had to have a go, though; we very rarely see hoar frost like that in this country.
Fantastic image! For some reason, it first gave me a romantic feel, and the second time I looked, it changed to scary :P
ps: I had to go back and look for the wires ;)

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: drag window to edge automatically resizes it
« Last post by jgpaiva on January 31, 2011, 06:00 AM »
The problem comes in when you paste something in Word, causing the paste-menu, and then use HotKeys in GridMove to resize Word.
Unfortunately, that paste-menu isn't a "menu" but a window, that now resizes to the Grid you wanted Word to resize to.  Word stays at its un-resized size and place.
Hi!

GridMove always works on the window which is topmost, as long as it can be resized.
This may cause multiple problems similar to yours, where a window opens a child window and you wanted to move the parent window. However, other times you may want the child window to be moved.
The problem you mentioned would imply me writing an explicit exception in the code for every window that someone required. Also note that some people may actually want to move the child window :(

I think there is no better solution than what you mentioned. Maybe you could alt-tab (to change focus) before using GridMove?

I also agree with Renegade (although I'm not sure he meant this on purpose): I'd like to see a small button per post, allowing the share in facebook and twitter.
What about the "I like this" button? I haven't been to DC in a while, and now coming back I've missed this button in at least 3 or 4 posts this week.

Thanks to the precious help of korbitz, we were able to solve this problem!
If you have the same problem, please replace the Images/Grid.bmp file with the one I attached to this post, and everything should be alright ;)

Apparently, Autohotkey is unable to resize the grid picture to make a line. But this makes no sense, as it has worked befora!
I have sort of ran out of options, but let's see if this desperate move makes any difference.

I've attached a new debug version to this post. Unfortunately, if this does not work, I honestly have no idea what may be causing this problem :(

[edit] maybe it'd be faster if we moved this discussion to the forum personal messaging system or to email. you can contact me on any of those by using the buttons bellow my avatar [/edit]

Ok, those numbers should be rounded, maybe that's what causes the problem. Let's see if this version fixes it ;)

This is incredible, I still have no idea why this is happening, even though I know the code line that causes it.
Let's see if this new debug info can shed some light on the problem.

PS: I'm terribly sorry for being this annoying, you're really being of great assistance!

What does this version get you?

Ok, thanks! (interesting, I think there may also be a bug with the iniversion parameter, but that's not the problem we are looking for here).

The version attached to this post will get us exactly the line causing this problem (unfortunately none of the 32 lines seem like they could cause a problem, let's see how it turns out).

ps: I only attached P1, the problem seems to be in this file.

Ok, let's see with this new version.

Before trying it, could you post the new file created by GridMove?

Damn antivirus, always more annoying than useful :P

Ok, I've attached a version of gridmove with more debug information to this post.
You just need to replace the other two files, set debug=1 and run GridMoveP1.ahk again.
Please tell me what was the last balloon when you run GridMoveP1.ahk before it hangs.

PS: can you please post your current GridMove.ini so that I have a few more clues about this?
(you may post it under
HERE!
tags so that it doesn't pollute the forum)

Thanks!

GridMove is spread in a few files (for sort-of modularity). Calc.ahk and Command.ahk are two other files that are in the zip I linked in the post above, I can't see how they are not found. Did you extract the whole zip to "d:\!ahk gridmove"?

« Last post by jgpaiva on January 18, 2011, 12:23 PM »
Actually I had this code already implemented for GridMove but ended up disabling it due to some people having trouble.
The script I've attached to this post should work. Just pass it the executables you want it to run when it detects a monitor change.
[warning: it's untested, as I don't have a Windows machine now :( ]

mmm I don't remember seeing a "reading the grid file" at all.

When I delete the ini file the help/about window does show up, as well as the running for first time notice. When I click on the ok for the running for first time note, the help/about window is frozen.

FYI I just booted into safe mode and the only thing I ran was gridmove and it had the same behaviour.
About the "reading the grid file" thing, it only comes up when debug=1, I forgot to mention.
Man, that's some thorough debug! Thanks!

I downloaded AHK and GM's source. I put it on a different drive - don't know if that makes any difference.

I run GridMoveP1.ahk and I get the error "#Include file Command.ahk cannot be opened." The error window's title is GridMoveP1.ahk.
Sorry, probably I wasn't explicit enough. You must unpack the whole zip and run GridMoveP1.ahk from the folder it is unpacked to. (Is there a Command.ahk file in the folder?)
You are running windows XP, right?

Although, when unzipping Gridmove and moving it to a folder, MSE detected Trojan:Win32/Orsam!rts in MaximizeWindow.exe. I allowed it, can I trust you?
That should be a false positive by the antivirus, they usually flag anything built with autohotkey (I'm surprised it didn't complain with GridMove.exe too!).
However, that .exe is only used in special grids, you may even go ahead and delete it, no need to blindly trust anyone ;)
